Nice job on the video. It's pretty obvious how and why the NW2 killed the 0-6-0 and 0-8-0 yard goats forever. After these and similar switchers came along, not many railroads held on to their steam switch engines. At only about 30 tons, the NWs were perfect for light branches, and some like the Lehigh Valley lashed 4 or more "pups" together on coal branches.

The Southern Pacific ordered SW8's (a direct descendant of the NW2) with dynamic brakes. The resistor grid on these is located directly in front of the cab on the hood. The Oregon Pacific has an ex Espee SW8 with dynamic brakes.

So did the Lehigh Valley . Which are the engines the earlier poster is refering to.

Top speed of 65 mph? That's pretty good for a yard switcher.
@brentboswell1294
@brentboswell1294 2 года назад
I seriously doubt that. Most of these early switchers were geared really low for better mechanical advantage when starting up. Before someone says "but a diesel electric locomotive doesn't have gears!", remember that there's a reduction gear on each axle (traction motor has a pinion gear, axle has a larger gear). I don't think AAR type B switch engine trucks could have been rated much higher than 30 MPH...I know that when a switcher was being moved on the road, the trains were operated under a 30 MPH speed restriction (that's with the switcher off and coupled in behind the road power).
@Lucius_Chiaraviglio
@Lucius_Chiaraviglio 2 года назад
@@brentboswell1294 That sounds sensible. The 65 mph figure in the video sounded amazingly high. On a somewhat related note: Some electric locomotives really did not have any gears, including those with bipolar electric motors and a subset of those that had side rod drive. Not sure if any diesel-electric locomotives were made that way, but it was in principle possible. A very small number of diesel locomotives that did not have electric transmission had no gears, including Rudolf Diesel's original Thermo-Lokomotiv (which didn't work very well) and the Kitson-Stills steam-diesel locomotive (which reportedly worked okay but was not commercially successful).
@ernestpassaro9663

Most yard switchers won't top 30 mph they are geared very low for lugging power !

Thank for the video, but the weight given in the video is 62,030 pounds. The Engines of North America website indicates a weight of 248,000 pounds.
@brentboswell1294
@brentboswell1294 2 года назад
The customer specified the operating weight. Diesel locomotives in North America have concrete blocks in the carbody. The extra weight helps with adhesion on starts. Different customers specify different weights depending on their operating conditions and specifications.
