In this Christmas episode of "Engines of The Pere Marquette", I will discuss the backstory and operational careers of the Pere Marquette's largest and most famous locomotives, the N/1200 series Berkshires, and along with it, the preservation of the survivors and the backstory of how one of them became the Real Polar Express. It'll be long, descriptive, filled with Christmas music, Christmassy, magical, and filled with surprises along the way. Note: the credits and outro are long too for the sake of the season.

Well guys, this is it, the Big one, the grand finale for the mainline freight engines saga of this series. The most anticipated episode in the entire playlist since day 1, the largest and most iconic locomotives of the Pere Marquette Railroad, I am OfCourse talking about the mighty Berkshires. 6 episodes in which I've improved on and gotten better at making from one to the next have built up to this potentially epic Christmas special. As you can imagine I could OfCourse not do this episode without also telling a story I've heard since 2017, have told to my family once, and have been wanting to tell on RU-vid since last year. It'll be one big challenge and a long episode, but I'm ready to take it on now, for you my audiences to enjoy. So, with that settled, grab your hot chocolate and cookies, and let's begin! And may the Lord our God in Heaven wish You a Merry Christmas and a happy New year!

This one's gonna be tough for me to watch. I lost my father last year, just before Christmas, and I'm still trying to come to terms with it. Dad *loved* 1225. He helped take care of her when she was at Michigan State in the mid-60s, and when he got back from a stint in the Army, he was one of the founding members of Project 1225 to restore her. He always wanted to see her run, but never got the chance. She's always been a special engine to me because of that. One of his most prized possessions was a print of a drawing of her by William Berkompas, one that was only available to members of the MSU Railroad Club at the start of her restoration. It always had a place of honor in any home he had. I'm still trying to find the perfect place to hang it in my apartment now, but just having my brother hand it to me (he handled the final arrangements because Dad was local to him when he passed) was the moment that it all became real, and it's still hard to even look at the print. I live along the old Ann Arbor, just north of where it crosses the old PM ("Annpere" Interlocking, to be specific), and every so often, 1225 comes through town to do some excursions in the area. COVID-19 has kept her away since Dad's death, but the next time she comes through town, it's going to be very, very difficult for me to hear that whistle. (And I *will* hear it. The line is literally 100 yards from my bedroom window, with a crossing right in line with the window...)

For me, the travels of this locomotive have resulted in many, many road trips, a big stack of photos, consumption of countlees slices of gas station pizza washed down with gallons of diet pepsi and a priceless set of experiences . These have ranged from visiting the enginehouse during the overhaul (a disconcerting experience to see parts of the locomotive scattered across the yard) to experiencing the ground shaking from the operator's bay of a small-town Michigan depot. Her starring in The Po;lar Express, though, was the crowning touch. This much appreciated video.brings back all these memories and many others. Thank you for making and posting it.

ok at the start I think Andrew said on December the 6 1941 the locomotive arrived on the Pere Marquette her number was 1225. wait!!! hold on a sec he was saying that 1225 was built in December 1941 but I went on google and I found out that 1225 was built in October 1941 not December even though the video is great by the way. and by tomorrow I will wish I would never put this Comment down so make sure to make fun of me. or be mean to me.
@pmrailfan7521
@pmrailfan7521 Год назад
It's ok, mistakes happen, theres a few in the video. PM 1225 was 'finished' in the first week of November, 1941. So yes, she was 'built', technically, in October, 1941. Railroads/Builders use the finish date to date equipment. So, on the books, she carrys the 'Built' date of 11/41. Or you grab a look see at her builders plate. Or any locomotives plate to determine its builder/year of birth/place of origin/order#. Kinda like a birth certificate.
@kellyfairbanks5330
@kellyfairbanks5330 Год назад

@AndrewTheRocketCityRailfan4014
Yeah, this whole thing about 1225’s birth is alittle messy. That’s why you should never overdepend on the internet all the time, especially for historical artifacts from times before the internet. That’s part of why I use that Pere Marquette book to aid in my research for this series
