England 2-0 Italy (1977) WCQ

England record an excellent 2-0 victory over Italy in a World Cup qualifier at Wembley in November 1977, a year after they had lost by the same scoreline to the Italians in Rome. Kevin Keegan gives England the lead before Trevor Brooking's first England goal seals it as they go in search for more goals to increase their qualification hopes. Alas a 2-0 win will not be enough for England to qualify for the 1978 finals, as they miss out despite winning five of their six group matches. Italy need only to beat the minnows of Luxembourg in their final game by any scoreline to qualify on goal difference and they duly do so.

I don't understand why England didn't qualify for the 1978 World Cup in Argentina. They had very good players and a good team. They were missed because in Argentina we appreciate good English football.And a football World Cup is never complete without England Greetings and respect!

England missed out on goal difference in their qualifying group. They played Argentina at La Bombonera in 1977 in a game that ended 1-1. I think that will be the last time an England football team will take the field in your country for a very long time...

@@LouisL1963 It's true what you say! I would like to see an English team selected in Argentina, but it has become difficult because of the rivalry that some people in my country promote and that has to do with the events of the war in the South Atlantic. What a pity! Sport should not be mixed with political matters. Best regards!

Well - at that time there were only 16 teams allowed to qualify and European teams simply HAD to win their qualification group. As England also had not been able to qualify for 1974 World Cup (losing to a formidable Polish team) they probably were not drawn from pot 1. Also Belgium did not qualify - bad luck as they were in the same group as Holland with Cruyff. We Austrians were pretty lucky as we "only" had to deal with East Germany, Turkey and Malta. Obviously, both England and Belgium were stronger than our unforgettable Cordoba team.

I was at this match aged 10. It was the first time I saw England play at Wembley. I remember walking up the steps looking up at the floodlit sky untl I could see the pitch and the huge crowd 100,000 back then. I was gob smacked and the excitement I felt was electric. Yes Wembley at night walking to the stadium as a youngster gives me the goosies even now. That pitch on cup final day, even the goal nets seemed magicical. I miss the very different types of goal nets we use to see at the different stadiums. Rather than the generic ones we have now. Also the tall floodlights towering over football grounds was the most exciting experience walking up to the ground.

Yes, the Italians were terrified of Keegan and rightly so, but not enough terrified that they thought Keegan would score or make 3 goals in this game - if I remember correctly that was the only way England could qualify. Keegan was the top striker in Europe at the time and the English First Division was chockful of talented English footballers in the 1970s, but they respected his ability highly. If England had respected the Italy team and especially the player who was given the job of marking Keegan, Marco Tardelli, England wouldn't have lost so badly in Rome and later on in Turin three years later - when Keegan's marker, Tardelli, scored the goal that knocked England out, again.

I was at this match too. My old man was Italian and football crazy (he went to Rome to watch Italy v England the year before this game was played) but took me to see all the England home games during the late 70s and early 80's, Wembley was ALWAYS full: a WC qualifier with Luxembourg or a friendly with Greece would draw a full house. We would also go and watch lots of matches in London at Highbury, Stamford Bridge, White Hart Lane, Loftus Road, Selhust Park and even the Valley and Brisbane Road. English football was very strong at this time - the English clubs also had the pick of the best Scots, Welsh and Irish players and dominated European football - but it's a mystery how England failed to qualify for three big tournaments in succession; 1974, 1976 and 1978.

Italian here. I APOLOGIZE for what it's worth. Shameful behavior from some of our players there. Especially that elbow from Tardelli (usually a rather correct player).on Keegan, even though he probably did not mean to hurt his face but just to stop him. But still disgusting unsportsmanlike behavior. He should have been sent out, obviously. About the others, Gentile was a great defender but always rough and Benetti was a good midfielder but he should have been redcarded way more often in his career, it was kind of the same in the Italian league playing with Juventus.

Sadly, the Finland result at home in October 1976 is what cost us qualification, along with the slender win over Luxembourg a month before this. We needed to win at least 3-0 that night to still stand a chance. Looking back, England really had some promising players in the late 70s/early 80s while Greenwood was a underrated manager, despite some horrendous defeats under his reign. If only Keegan was fit in Spain '82. And that was down the the same problem we have nowadays in that there too is long a season and too many games.

Italy had the insurance policy of a home match with Luxembourg after this game, as this was in the days when rival teams in qualifying groups didn't all play their last games at the same time. Losing 2-0 to England meant Italy only needed to beat Luxembourg 1-0 to qualify ahead of England on goal difference and they duly won 3-0. To put Italy under any pressure England would have needed to win this game 4-0 or 5-0, and funnily enough they might have done so if they'd taken their chances and Tardelli had been sent off in the first-half as he should have been for elbowing Keegan. Usual story for England of what might have been.

And if only Bobby Robson had introduced John Barnes 15 mins earlier than he did in that infamous QF vs Argentina though Lineker really should have scored his 2nd off Barnes' cross which was similar to the cross Barnes set up Lineker for the 1st goal. Thought England vs Italy should have been the final in Italia '90.

Totally agree about 1990 - Bobby had tweaked England to play perfectly & even the Germans know they were fortunate at being the better penalty takers (ironic that they end up winning from a spot kick in the final). The Argentines just kept playing the negatives to take things to spot kicks, as they'd done in previous rounds. The 3rd place game between us & Italy would've been the right final, but just glad the Germans stopped Maradona & his cheating scumbags (the surrounding the ref alone from the penalty-I'd have dismissed all of those who'd done that to me as a match official). Really, the Yugolavs should've sent Dirty Diego & Co home by the quarters. But since when has a recent WC ended up with the good guys making the final? Uruguay behaved disgracefully against Ghana & "Gnasher" Suarez should never have played another match in the 2010 finals after his gamesmanship.

England had quality footballers and top club sides in the seventies but were chronically mislead by poor and incompetent management at the FA. Italy had sublime players at this time but massively underachieved - though they'd go on to reach their pinnacle at tbe '82 world cup.
@oldskoolmusicnostalgia
@oldskoolmusicnostalgia 4 года назад
Massively underachieved at what? Maybe Euro 1980. But 4th place finish for a young Italy team was a good result in 1978, then they won it in 1982. As for England they were actually much better in the 1970s and 80s. But in those days it was also more difficult to qualify for tournaments. And once you reached a World Cup, you could not possibly reach the semis by beating Colombia and Sweden, you had to face the big guns... So very good England teams like 1982-90 are rated as underachieving while not so good ones are considered to have performed well.

That is the freedom Ron Greenwood gave to his players: when in possession they can interchange positions as the flow of the game demands. Hence, Brookings and Keegan play like old-fashion inside-forwards. Also, I understand that at certain times of the year the wings at Wembley can be pretty soggy; and Coppell knows this. Wrong combination of players cost England that earlier fixture in Italy.
