@neph ilim Welbeck did well for ManUtd that season, a ManUtd team.who got 89pts and knocked Man City out of the FAcup AT the Etihad etc...Lescott won the PL with ManCity, Andy Carroll scored in the FAcup semi-finals & final and won LeagueCup. All very understandable and all 3 scored in the competition so it was justified.
@@garethdwright91since you referred to some players as has beens ,AND NEVER WERE'S , let me run one Statistic by you, do you know how many games Theo wallcot and oxlien Chamberlain started as right and left wingers for England ???? ,ONLY 2 , AND IN BOTH GAMES THEY DREW 2,2 WITH SPAIN , THEN THEY DREW 2,2 WITH BRAZIL, in both games Spain and Brazil had to come from behind ,and only did so when one of the 2 were subbed off . So, who are the never WERE'S ?
@@jameel5747 Yes, completely agree, comes off his head with more speed than it was delivered, from that height, from that range, with that technique and power and accuracy. I can't think of one that has more about it than that one. Not even Van Persie's flying header. Not a single one.
people forget that Hart, Lescott, Young and Welbeck had just had the best seasons of their career going into this tournament, Carroll, Gerrard, Johnson, Cole, Terry and Milner had all won silverware and Rooney was suspended
Due to the sheer number of times the two teams have played each other in qualifying or tournaments. Sweden also tend to play a British style of football which has plenty of energy and aggression, and the games are usually very keenly-fought.
Home wasnt bad either, it was that kit that was all white ...but came with a set of red shorts instead of blue ones So when they lined up with Joe Hart in the middle in his all red kit, it looked like an England flag ...bloody brilliant Shame we only ever did it against Italy in qualifying

@@Ken_from_Mumbai completely agree. And the technique and power were sensational. Any youngsters watching should take note of how to head a football correctly.

The last remnants of the "golden gen" and bunch of never-were's. So happy these teams no longer infect England. Too much heart break. So happy the direction we are now. Complete change culturally, philosophically and collectively
Great memories. I was on a night out with some college friends celebrating finishing finals. We left one pub with England a goal up, and arrived at the next just as Sweden were levelling. We saw the rest of the game and cheered England on to a great win. Not sure there will be as many goals today, but the same result would be great. As a Villa I have to admit I enjoyed that Mellberg double.
My thoughts exactly. Was an odd mix of players. The past it, failed left overs of the so called golden generation. And younger players who were just not quite international class.
@@groot8950 Apparently shite but topped the qualifying group undefeated, topped the group undefeated in the actual finals themselves in a group that included France and were unbeaten in actual game time, only losing at the QF stages to eventual runners-up Italy on penalties
Sad that Parker only started getting played when he was declining with age. Seems like he could have been the answer to how to play Gerrard and Lampard in the same team. Just think about if England had played a 4-2-3-1 with Parker (as the holding mid) and Gerrard (with freedom to move up and down the pitch) in the 2 and Lampard (pushing forward to join the striker) as the attacking mid. Similar to the way Brozovic worked with Modric and Rakitic in 2018.
Parker was an average player at best. Overated and fortunate to get where he did. You are correct in the role he played. We had the answer to that problem for years before this. His name was Michael Carrick.
@@leebush4053 mmm overrated? Won PFA Young Player of the Year in 2004 and the FWA Player of the Year in 2011. Was vital at the base of the Spurs midfield behind Modric and Van der Vaart, to make them function properly. I never actually liked the man or even the footballer, but i always felt like he was underrated by so many fans.
@@SmashMash1000 unless you’re Spanish. It doesn’t stick in the memory too much, but I actually think it was one of England’s better tournaments, considering that we didn’t have too much time to prepare for it.
@@lalallama171 no, 2018 World Cup. But England did quite well in this tournament considering Hodgson didn’t have a lot of time with the players. As a tournament, England fans tend to forget it but we shot some good bolts.
Considering how close this game came after the messy break up between Joe Hart and Ibrahimovic (with Hart getting custody of their pet Cavapoo) I think they were both incredibly brave and handled themselves with dignity. Save for Ibra's one moment of raw emotion.
This was such a weird period for the England squad - Welbeck and Carroll, jesus what sort of frontline is this? The only player who remains is Ashley Young
I´m from Sweden too. I remember Zlatan Ibrahimovic who plays for Sweden International since 2001 before retiring in 2016. In march this year he made comeback for Sweden in World cup qualifying matches against Georgia and Kosovo.
Roy Hodgson was a disgrace as England manager, 3 tournaments completely wasted on him, this is as good as it ever got & it was all the way downhill from there.
Euro 2012 is viewed as an abject failure but if I remember England was decent... won their group which included Sweden and France, then got outplayed by Italy yes but managed to reach a penalty shootout at 0-0, defended well and had a good mentality. When were the English supposed to outclass Italy on the ball anyway?
@@ludvighindsgaul3720 The trajectory of the ball deceives the goalkeeper, he made the best effort. As you have probably never played soccer in your life, do not comment
@@futboltotal9724 Well i have played soccer for 10 years and been goalkeeper for 6 years, and i am 16 years old, so you are pretty much wrong here. Yes i know its a difficult ball, but still i Think that Isaksson didnt Those the right choise trying to save The Ball, and i would have made another choice here.
@@ludvighindsgaul3720 All the goalkeepers make mistakes, only the idiots look at the mistakes, I was a forward in an amateur team for 4 years and I never blamed the goalkeepers for the mistakes, so I said I saw a magnificent goal
Why are people saying this team was terrible? On paper, it's fairly decent. Hart, Terry, Cole, Gerrard, an inform Parker and co, with a target man up top for Gerrard to link with. Not bad at all. Nothing special, but could get the job done. Throw in Glen Johnson and Lescott and you've got a decent backline. Johnson was one of the best right backs in the premier league at the time, and Cole was the best left back, or do people forget?
I just think it's hilarious that after Swedens 2nd goal Zlatan shoves Joe Hart, swears at him and screams yeeeaaaaah in his face acting clever only for England to come back and win 🤣
This team was better than people give credit to Parker and Wellbeck were underrated, Wallcott was a world beater on his day, Caroll didnt meet near enough of his potential and the team didnt give a poor showing against an italian team that swatted a decent german team in the semis.
Not first EVER competitive win v Sweden for your information. First since 1968. The funny part is that Scotland beat Sweden FIVE times in the intervening period.
