England to Sicily Road Trip Day One.
1,700 miles down south from Ipswich in the UK, to Sicily, Italy. The little Fiat 500 has 195,000 miles on the clock and is towing a trailer with my Triumph Bonneville attached- the entire way.
For day one, our aim was to get through France, Belgium, Luxembourg and into Germany for the night.

You'll be better putting the front straps on the handlebars. When you ratchet them down it'll compress the fork springs and keep the straps tight as the forks try to rise again. All the best. 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿

Freddy, i think the hole on your trailer where you pass the (very thin...) cable tie might have a sharp edge which cuts said cable tie due to vibration. Otherwise, you & Monika stat safe & have fun and feel free to tell us what inspired you to go to Sicily 😉

Your Tenerife trip inspired me and a friend to do a roadtrip in the summer! So we did a 10 country, 4000 mile trip through Europe, headed through the Swiss alps, and visited Monaco the day after the Grand Prix, and hit the autobahns in Germany, visited random little places all over, and did the whole south coast of France and Spain and ended up in gibraltar…….in a 22 year old Peugeot 206! Watching that video led me onto carrying out a bucket list item I’ve always wanted to do but never had the confidence to, and it was the best thing I’ve ever done! So much so, I’m currently planning next years trip to Italy! So I’m looking forwards to this series of videos!👌🏼

On the theft side, in my experience, you are more likely to lose your Bonneville in London than Palermo however the old mantra of 'lock it or lose it' is a good one that applies anywhere, a bit of towing advice is when in transit buy a rain cover and cover your 'bonnie' up , keeps the weather off (and any prying eyes) it will also prevent the loss of items like side panels !! Bon Voyage and stay safe.

Freddie, when you rely on cable ties alone to secure something in a "dynamic" environment, like on your light board, if possible always use two or even 3 cables ties, it will be far more secure. When you use tie down straps to secure your bike on the trailer, first lean the bike over at 10 degrees off the vertical and remove any slack on the straps on side the bike is leaning towards. Then pull the bike against the straps on the leaning side until the bike is vertical. The suspension will compress as the bike become vertical. This will keep it more secure as the suspension will "push" against the straps holding the bike down tighter and more securely.

Hi Freddie and Monica, great start to your adventure. As I mentioned before we are in Sicily touring in our MoHo, we have an electric ride on scooter on the back which has been great for exploring the narrow hill towns. There are always a lot of doom mongers, but touch wood, we have only found the Sicilians helpful and friendly ( don't call them Italians though...) With normal precautions like good locks we have not had any thefts or other concerns at all. It feels much safer to us than say Tottenham. Enjoy the rest of your travels. Malcolm

I've always had large cars, Jaguar XJR, Mercedes but the most recent, my BMW 325 I sold 5 years ago and bought a Fiat 500 Cult. This was largely as I was driving everywhere for work, and let's face with fuel prices going up there is only so long you can live with 20-25 MPG. So I bought the Fiat with 20,000 miles on, 3 years old. It was a stop gap measure while I got the business going (we had not long started our own business). Problem is, it was so damn good, park it anywhere, 50-60MPG, it's got leather, climate control. I flippin fell in love with it! It's now got 117,000 miles on, and, dare I say it, so reliable. You will have to prise the keys out of my cold dead hands. It still looks like new, and still looks modern, and it's not just another box on wheels. We found a lovely Fiat specialist locally who deals with all the services and the odd repairs. So far the biggest thing to go wrong was the gear selector cable. Love it, Fiat really did themselves proud with the 500.

Screws not zip ties. Drill holes and put screws in. Zip ties are easy to snap with a bit of torque with that number plate holder flapping in the wind. Even easier with sharp edges. Put straps from handle bar and compress the front suspension, that way it is under constant tension and won’t loosen as it bounces around going down the road. You can put some on the rear grab handle for extra security, also compressing the rear suspension (but not necessary if the front buttoned down tight)
@anthonyburt9342
@anthonyburt9342 Год назад
Hey Freddie, love following you and Monica.....but to keep your bike from falling off the trailer, or loosening, you have to attach the straps higher on the bike to compress the springs so as to not have the bike bouncing around. So attach the front straps to the handlebars and the rear to the subframe and pull down hard. That should do it . Cheers and safe travels, Burtie from Australia

Great weather I can't believe it, I hope it continues for you both. I love your faith in zip ties, maybe a couple of bolts would have been better given the distance you're going 😁 Was that the side panel you lost off the bike!! All these things make for good stories, safe travels to you both. I'd keep regular checks of the bike and straps, they do give a bit as temperatures change. Great video as always.

I really should’ve used some bolts (and loctite). The side panel disappeared, so I’ll have to buy another. All my own doing (as per usual!). Thanks Dale, sending all my best🙂

Freddie get a handlebar strap for the bike. I transport bikes all the time and they work much better & more secure, than just lashing the bike to the trailer & they are very, very easy to use.

Really looking forward to this ‘series’! Plenty of cockups already. Just hope no one ruins it with the theft warnings😢.

I think the TV chef Rick Stein had his Land Rover defender stolen from Sicily! At the start of the video I said to myself I hope he checks them straps… when I started driving wagons an old boy said to me that strapping a load should be done so if you turned the trailer upside down the load stays on it! If you got 6 straps use them mate and think about the angles…. I think I’m going to enjoy this set of videos, you really do come across as a great entertainer Freddie !

Great episode Freddie think it may have been mentioned but looks like the light cluster might be damaged, maybe a nut and bolt would have been more secure 👍

Hi Freddie and Monica hopefully you have discovered the left hand indicator light on the trailer board had stopped working? All 4 flashing on the car but only the right hand on the trailer board probably the globe due to the impact with the road. Large hose clamp would be an improvement on the cable ties if you are unable to drill through the metal of the trailer. Safe travels

Love the background music very chill, hey do yourself a favour and get some proper motorcycle tie downs and connect loops to handle bars to slightly compress forks much more secure and never go loose as the tension of the suspension keeps them tight! Best 20£ you will spend. Good luck with the rest of the trip

Really looking forward to seeing your arrival and exploration of Sicilia. Me, my wife and daughter travelled there earlier this year for the first time back in July, my goodness that was hot but what a fantastic country, we explored all of the western part of the island, Palermo, Mondello, Monreale, Cefalu and Agrigento, would love to go back and see the eastern side next time. Anyway good luck with everything Freddie, and great content mate, Also loved your last video on north essex (Where im from) good stuff mate, kind regards Fraser.

You and your cable ties. It's like James Bond meets Frank Spencer. I see the hazard flash on the trailer board (nearside) had already failed by the time you got to Dover. Trailer boards are rubbish quality, as I've said before, you should get some LEDs and make little mounting plates for them and put cages over them. They'll last a long time. Good route you've chosen, it avoids the tolls, avoids the French too! You need a vignette if you're going through Switzerland. Nice weather, I enjoyed the sunshine. There's no need to rush is there? Take your time and savour it. Wish I was in the car behind you! Best wishes.

Another entertaining episode! We are very near Seattle, where the first Starbucks was built and remains as a tourist must-do. The mural on the wall in the Belgian Starbucks has all the hallmarks of the Pacific Northwest USA.

Hi Freddie make sure to visit mount Etna on your bike, amazing scenic road, watch out for volcanic ashes on the tarmac. Don't miss SS185 also, one of the best road on the island.
