Sensacional el ambiente en el viejo wembley,la auténtica catedral del futbol mundial. La selección inglesa de aquella época estaba repleta de grandes jugadores. Saludos desde Sevilla,España.

England in 1982 was really a great team with many excellent players ! And in the World Cup 3 wins( 3-1 against France the best for me) and two 0-0 ( Spain and West Germany): no loser!!! The Wembley atmosphere was simply fantastic...Thanks for this match from Italy !

The cross by Keegan to Regis- so good. Imagine Keegan and Regis up front in that World Cup. Keegan crossing to Regis more often in a team over 90 minutes with Hoddle and Robson in midfield. Cyrille Regis should have been given a few more caps prior to the 1982 World Cup just to get him familiar as a striker option. Even Martin Tyler said as Cyrille was warming up - "the buzz around Wembley as Cyrille warms up". Easy to say with hindsight and not easy as so many great players in England at the time.

Agree, i think you have to play 6 games minimum to get up to inter standard..Loved to have seen Regis with Francis and say Woodcock in an attacking trident at the 82 WC?

Cyril Regis the Only Goalscorer that reminded me of Gerd Muller - Why didn't the Man even make the squad for Spain ¿ .

Interesting game..the use of Ray Wilkins as a sweeper was discarded after this match despite Ray being a perfect fit for that kind of player and it worked well, some indicators of what England could have been if Clough had got the job in 1977, the use of Morley who should have been in the England side a year earlier than he was..Anderson instead of the iffy Phil Neal, Hoddle's class...the strange decision to have Steve Foster (why was the Veteran Dave Watson taken to Spain instead?)..Regis who might have formed an excellent partnership with say Paul Mariner of the time (Mariner's movement would have freed Cyril who was cracking them in in 1981/192..all wasted or underused by Greenwood..

We had world cup winning players. As so often management wasted what we had.

I was baffled by the midfield set up in the first half with only really one central midfielder, Robson. Morley was wide left and Hoddle, though not wide, was still nonetheless right midfield. A very open, empty central midfield. When they switched Morley to the right for the 2nd half, Hoddle played more central alongside Robson, and England took more control of the game. Morley was much improved, too.

@@Lee_yourboylee Yep..also the case for Alan Devonshire on the left of that midfield in a midfield left to right of Devonshire/Robson/Hoddle/Morley..

@@Lee_yourboylee The team that Clough and Taylor would have played at that 1982 WC would have been (ideally since Beattie's career ended in 1980) would have been; Shilton...Anderson/Butcher/Beattie/Statham..Devonshire/Robson/Hoddle/Morley...Mariner/Regis...

@kailashpatel1706 Год назад
@@duncanholding7636 Hang on bro...I know he was declining but a seasoned pro in the squad (not the team) would i think have been better...One of the problems in the England side at the time was that in central defence Kevin Beattie's injuries had ended his career by 1980...He would have been at the centre of the England defence at that time...Not Phil Thompson who though a good player was not in Beattie's class.

@duncanholding7636 Год назад
@@kailashpatel1706 maybe the manager and the coaches who were constantly working with Watson over time saw the decline and were in a better position to judge than the likes of you and I. Watson was a good player but let's not forget Lawrie Mcmeneny who was an excellent judge of buying and working with more mature players also binned him from Southampton in early 82.. they can't all be wrong...
