English Football's Insane Response To The Queen's Death 

Alfredo made some excellent points here. The decision to postpone those matches was a massive cockup. There is no reason to cancel every football match just because a royal died comfortably four years short of a century in age. A minute silence before each match is more than enough.

The simple fact that no other sport taking place in the country was postponed and managed to handle it all very respectfully shows you that those in charge of football were more interested in grabbing headlines than anything. I can totally understand some postponements due to police resources being needed elsewhere especially in and around London but when they now will cause problems especially after the World Cup then they only have themselves to blame as it hasn't exactly crept up on them.

Spot on. The decision to postpone games was reactionary, poorly thought out and executed and at worst, just plain stupid.

As soon as I saw the news it was clear that the UK was about to become a very strange place for at least a month. Absolutely bonkers.

This was actually so well put together. What a horrendous situation I always forget that stadium staff are on temp and they’ve probably already mentally spent that money on bills, school supplies and all sorts. Ridiculous

I’m a coach at a junior club and following the FA guidance cancelled all football, games and our drop in soccer school. Later that same day the FA issued ‘further clarification’ that you could in fact still train. So we could have ran the soccer school, not deprived 100+ kids of their football, and not lost that day’s revenue. I also wouldn’t have had to have debates with parents who who showed me the later guidance when questioning our decision

You would think Lizzy invented the sport the way England is acting.

Iv got to be brutally honest here, somebody has died which is never nice for that person's relatives and friends.. Beyond that I must admit I'm not at all bothered., sport should have carried on and given the fans the opportunity to mourn publicly if they wished to do so. Cancellation of everything because of someone that people have never even met or thought about is just absurd.

On the “Will Charles be a good King?” point - how does one be a good or bad monarch in the modern day? They literally do NOTHING.

The irony is that Queen Elizabeth II would have been mortified (and quite possibly horrified) at the way people have reacted to her passing. She would not have approved of people being arrested for holding signs saying "Not My King" and as a great lover of sport, she most definitely would not have approved of sporting events been cancelled. Obviously I have never met Lizzie, but a close friend of mine who worked for the Royal Family for quite a few years has confirmed what I think.

Also just to mention I also know of a charity run that has been raising money for almost a year being cancelled ‘out of respect’ of the queens passing because, of course, how can raising money for a charitable cause be viewed as anything but disrespectful in these ‘sad times’. I think it’s mental how we must be subject to all of this nonsense just for a person who was never even chosen by the people to be in a position of power

It's obvious how much the Brits have a hard on for the monarchy although i don't see why the games should have been postponed especially when other sports like Rugby and Tennis continued as normal.

This was more evident when even Bayern Munich fans protested by displaying a banner in the 26th minute of the group game against Barcelona at the Allianz Arena that read, "Last Minute Match Delays And Bans Because Of A Royal's Death - Respect Fans."

I have to say, this is a fucking incredible video. You couldn't actually be more spot on about this country, it's all about protecting the elite and pushing the divide even further. Manufactured grief serving those unwilling to admit they fetishize the idea of royalty without giving it even an ounce of critical thought.

My biggest problem about the queens death is that vital services are being cancelled and it sets a dangerous precedent that if a royal dies especially the king/queen we will shut down everything and if u die due to it, its ur own fault doesnt look good imagin being told u cant feed urself, or get to work to pay the bills or even getting to do the 1 thing that brings u happyness in life cause a 96 year old died in a peaceful way and then on top of all that then being told u should be sad that she is gone and if you dont you are an evil self centered person

This is just another reason for me to drop professional football from my interests. The fans don't matter. The Queen was old and her death was always on the cards. Meaning Football authorities should have plans in place as to what to do. The decision to cancel fixtures was complete madness. What's wrong with fans not wanting to sing the new anthem.

I am truly shocked that it is a bad idea to call of games when some teams basically already have to played every 3 days. Nobody could have ever seen this coming. Jokes aside, I don't think Elizabeth would have enjoyed it if mourning for her went so far that other people risk long term injuries. I am sure as the figurehead of England she wouldn't want people to act like that (probably most people would not want that sadness about their passing would stop parts of peoples lifes and/or society). Continuing a part of my life I suggest: Day 8: The biggest wins in every european top flight (Athletic Bilbio 12-1 FC Barcelona; Gladbach 12-0 Dortmund; Ajax 13-0 VVV Venlo).

I'm ambivalent to the royals. That being said, the Queen was a remarkable person and held herself with the utmost grace in a world which has become almost unrecognisable since she carried the crown for the first time in 1952. The complete postponement of all football at all levels is just wrong. The media in this country as you rightly say Alfie are repugnant and deeply bitter. They have fuelled hate wars against migrants, Class systems as well as those with different political leanings; that combined with the fuel "shortage" which was entirely created by the media which led to many petrol stations being shut or rationing fuel if open. Going back to football, the fact that other sports have carried on as normal and that football has made this move is baffling at best; the repercussions of the decision made by the Premier league and the EFL were completely ignored. All fans should be reimbursed for travel and ticket costs for the affected games. The manufactured grief that they have forced into the fans this weekend isn't right either. They should just have the minute's silence at the start and then carry on. They should have just done that last week; but no. I have avoided all terrestrial TV channels the best i can due to the over saturation of the news, I don't plan to watch the funeral either.

Spent last few days in Barcelona, its been a relief to escape the onslaught from British mainstream media. No sign of British Royality on any news stand, TV station or nor was it mentioned by any person I interacted with! Going for a long walk with the dog today to avoid as much of the funeral as possible. Thanks for putting out content that brings back sanity and context.

I can't believe my club as just done that. Makes me feel a bit ashamed to be a Preston fan, a lifetime fan for a poorly-themed tweet is an utter disgrace. It was likely a joke, but even so, when you take into account that dissing the queen (who's dead) is seen as worse than shouting racist or homophobic abuse (multiple people of those backgrounds likely to be in earshot). Honestly very angry about that because that could've been me. I could've made the same dumb joke when I was 15 and would get a lifetime ban.
