English Grammar: Linking Verbs (Copula)

"Be", "seem", "look", "sound", and more are examples of linking verbs in English. These are also called copula verbs. They are special because they do not involve an action, even though some may be used in a similar way to action verbs. In this grammar lesson, we’ll learn how to use these linking verbs in English, in what situations to use them, and how to recognize them when we see them. It may appear difficult, but it’s much simpler than it seems. www.engvid.com...

Back in 2012 when I just started emerging myself into English environment and struggled with speaking and understanding my English teacher in extra classes which cost dramatically expensive. I had been learning English on RU-vid a lot! I had watched so many teachers but still couldn't feel confident about the gist in each video. Actually Mr. Adam from Engvid was the first teacher to whom I understood and learnt how to speak. I sincerely appreciate you Mr. Adam for your contribution in my future. You're a great teacher!

It seems to me that there's a contradiction in what you say. Concerning the examples of the verb "BE", you say "he is (=) tall", talking about him, and the same thing for "he is (=) a teacher", talking about his profession, which means there's no difference between himself and his profession. But concerning the examples of the verb "SEEM", you say the opposite. For the example "she seems nice", you speak about herself. But according to the examples of the verb "BE", both himself (tall) AND his job (teacher) are equals to "he", why you didn't say "she seems to be nice"? because "she seems" => "to be (=)" => "nice". If the correct way to say it is "she seems nice", and either "nice" (=tall) or "an executive" (=a teacher) refer to her, why you didn't say : "she seems married", "she seems an executive" like "she seems nice" ? rather than "she seems to be married", "she seems to be an executive". But according to all your examples, I think the error (maybe I'm wrong, I'm not an English native speaker) is in the example "she seems nice", and he seems to me that it would be more appropriate to say "she seems to be nice" like all the other examples. Please, could you explain me? Thank you.

I was taught that we can not add " ing" to state verbs, and only action verbs can have "ing" at the end. But here i can see that we can have ing in state verbs when we want to imply the progression(becoming). I have a question. Do we have any other special cases. In the setences below : "i am having a good time", "You are being so mean", " i am thinking about you" , " are you seeing someone", are having", "being", " thinking" , " seeing" linking verbs or are they action verbs???

"linking verbs" sounds stupid, because every verb with two+ related nouns is link something. Seems like linking verbs = descriptive verbs with some time specific.
@WyMustIGo
@WyMustIGo 2 года назад
What do you mean about TENSE verbs, I thought ALL verbs have tense when used as a verb? For example, an Infinitive does not have tense because the verb after TO is not being used as a verb, it is being used as a noun.

Thank you, sir, for this beautiful explanation. But still, I have genuine doubt about the be verb when we use it for the existence of a thing or something like," I wouldn't be who I am, " Is it a copula here? There is water. There is a little water in that pot. Can I say it is a linking verb to explain the qualities of the subject "there"?

Han Han 👨🏻‍🏫 Hello, Han. Mr Teacher here in England 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿. There is some confusion about your examples. I can help you with them. The first sentence should be like this - ‘It seems to be nice weather is on the way tomorrow ‘. Maria Makinen 👨🏻‍🏫 Hello, Maria. Mr Teacher here in England 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿. I have an answer to your question. Both sentences are correct. The difference between them is quite subtle. In ‘She seems nice’ you are giving an opinion without any further evidence. In ‘She seems to be nice’ your opinion is stronger, reflecting how she presents herself to you.
