Stromae is known for the puns in his songs. It's kinda sad that as a non-French speaker you (in general) cannot realize this. In this music he says "quand c'est, cancer" (almost the same pronunciation) And "fumer tue, tu m'étonnes" subtle but I love the way he wrote it. In the music "Formidable", he says "tu étais formidable, j'étais fort minable "you were great, I was very lousy" (again, almost the same pronunciation.) Anyway, these are just small examples, but all of his songs are subtly written and you can see it. I really love this complete artist, I would have loved to see him in concert (he seems really funny too)

I think they are all translated. Stromae is known all around the wolrd, he made world tours, so all of his clip video (or at least the most famous) have subtitles. @BreakingBars you should watch them all, Stromae is a genius

That's quite an introduction to Stromae. Probably his most shocking song and video. Bone-chilling. This is beyond singing. It's performance art. Stromae is an extraordinary artist. Unique. A true gem to treasure for years to come. He tells stories, visualizes them and shares his vision. He follows no rules other than to be as honest and transparent as he can be. I've become a huge fan of this guy. I learn something from his work and I never tire of his performances. Everything is perfectly orchestrated to serve the meaning of the song. Enjoy the discovery.

I love when he says "dis moi quand c'est" (tell me when it is) which is almost pronounced the same way as "tell me cancer" in french He is a genius, all of is song are written subtly

One of my favourites from Stromae is "Tous les mêmes", where he alternates between a woman's and a man's point of view based on clichés and prejudices of one gender towards the other. The little Belgian girl that I am is very happy to have discovered your channel, I love it! I like to see your reactions to certain verses and even more so when it comes to deciphering certain metaphors and French expressions. It's really great :D

Indeed he doesn't rap often but his music is still a classic, he rarely makes less than 100 or 200 million views, he has an international reach contrary to French rappers, he was the biggest seller of CDs in France at one point he stopped music because of his success more than 5 years ago because it had affected him psychologically, it's become unbearable, he's been preparing an album for 2 years now, he doesn't know if he wants to publish it or not, what's for sure is that if there's one person who can break the Orelsan record, it's him

No, it was the anti malarial drug called Lariam, which he was given before and during the African leg of his Racine Carrée tour, which caused him terrible depression and suicidal thoughts and anxiety. He credits his brother, Luc, with realizing something was terribly wrong with him and saving his life. Subsequently, that medication, Lariam, was investigated as it has had horrendous side effects for most everyone. Stromae knew he wanted time off after his 209-concert two-year world tour, but this awful drug had a serious affect on him. He had to postpone his concert in Kigali, Rwanda until October 2015, which was an important venue for him for obvious reasons. That was his final Racine Carrée concert. He has been designing fashion, working with other artists and he got married at the end of 2015 to Coralie Barbier with whom he had a son in 2018. I doubt he’ll do a world tour like before for several reasons. I imagine he wouldn’t want to be away from his son for long periods of time for one thing and he can pick his venues now. Bigger ones and fewer concerts. His new single is called Santé (health as well as cheers) and its wonderful. If you need a full explanation of its meaning I suggest an English French professor called Professor Skye. He loves Stromae and expertly dissects his lyrics.

6:23 Well, even within francophone music, Stromae is kind of an oddity... No one makes music or writes like he does. He's difficult to put in a genre because he's kind of unique. My personal favourite from him is « Humain à l'eau » (again, a play of words, « à l'eau » meaning “to the water” and sounding exactly like “Allô” which is what you say when you answer the phone OR when you want to call out somebody who's not listening)... It's not very popular and I didn't like it the first time I heard it because the music is too minimalist to my taste, but the second time, I listened to the lyrics and... SHIT, this guys knows HOW to write ! I'm trying to make a translation in order to send it to you but, it's pretty complicated due to the kind of writing and the numerous puns in it ;) I just discovered your channel and I like what you do, it's pretty nice :)

Stromae is a Belgian artist from Brussels. His first banger is "Alors on dance" (so we dance) and that song made him known in other places than Belgium. A few years later, he released an album (which for me is one of the best albums of all Time) called "Racine carré" (square root) with songs that became internationally popular like "formidable" "Papaoutai" "ta Fête" etc. He makes kind of electro music but they always have a deeper meaning to them and his text can be very powerful (For example, his song called "Dodo" talks about a father that uses violence on his family).

"Quand c'est" and "Cancer" have almost the same pronunciation except for cancer you pronounce the R, Stromae is playing with that all along the song. Fun fact : Kanye and Stromae did a featuring remix of "alors on dance" in 2010

One thing to add: every titles of his songs are a joke with words with the content of the song. "quand c'est" (could be translated by "when") sounds like "cancer" (the only difference is the "R" that is pronounced)

StroMy. If you say Maestro (MyStro) and reverse the syllables you get StroMy). He is not a rapper. Only when he was about 14.. quand C’est and Cancer sound the same in French. So it’s When is it (Quand C’est) and Cancer. Stromae writes for everyone who may have gone through whatever he writes about. Cancer is the crab. So the performance is exactly that. My Mum died of cancer, profoundly awful, but this song is genius. Only Stromae could write a song about something so painful but yet you return to it because it’s brilliantly done.
