Wonderful old film of our once mighty cotton industry, and its cotton towns up and down Lancashire. It almost looks like a different world, and in many ways it is.
I was born and bred in Nelson in the late 1940's through into the 1960's so this film is quite evocative for me. I remember a sense of community that is now gone but I also remember old folk crippled by rickets and stone deaf from working in the weaving sheds as well as the vile slum housing that some people had to endure. Sadly, as well as losing the bad things, we also seem to have lost many of the good things such as almost no crime on the streets, a local Co-op where everyone knew everyone else and a doctor's evening surgery where you could always get treatment even without an 'appointment'. Pity we cannot lose the bad things without losing the good things at the same time.
Films like this are a poignant reminder of our recent past.Not nostalgic,but a window into the grim reality of life in industrial England & its decline after the war. Thanks for posting.
Id actually liked to have grown up in those days. Far better than today in 2022 thats for sure. Dont forget, you wouldn't miss the internet and mobiles before they were invented...
By the way ... didn't mean "fun" as in a happy topic, but easy to watch compared to much of the nonsense topics out there. This is a true window into yesterday.
Made in 1960 for a BBC Panorama five minute film competition. The film didn't win but the opening title was shown as an example of "A conventional approach to the subject !". The voice is that of Stanley Riddiough MBE TD
Once walked into a weaving shed to ask about any job vacancies, I was taken to the shop floor to be shown around and I walked straight back out, the noise was horrendous don't know how anyone could work in one, Awful.
