Welcome to English in a Minute...from home!
If you spend time away from home, you might write emails, text messages or even letters to your loved ones. But, what does it mean if something is “nothing to write home about?”
AM: Jonathan, have you tried that new pizza made with noodles -- the pizzoodle?
JE: I have...and honestly, it’s nothing to write home about. Not worth the price -- or the two-hour wait in line!
AM: But I’m at the drive thru. And the crust is made of noodles!
JE: (shrugs)
The phrase “nothing to write home about” is a way of saying something is not special or worthy of praise. Language experts say the phrase was first used among military members living far from home.
And that’s English in a Minute!
