Having 13/15 as a non-speaker just out of "That one sounds better than the rest", I can say like a lot of people here that actively using and hearing the language on Internet, songs, etc. helps way more than just studying during languages classes.
I'm a native speaker, and I could try to explain the grammar, but the truth is I got these correct because of intuition. That's it. To anyone who LEARNED all or most this consciously, Congratulations!
It is very hard for non native speakers like myself. The construction of the phrases are completelly different from Portuguese so.. tooke me decades to learn how to comunicate properly.. and still.. it is a ongoing process..

Speaking from the point of non native speaker I think most of us do this also with intuition because we've learned mostly from books, internet etc. There was like one answer that I needed to think and not pick intuitively. I think that learning english strictly without using intuition would be kinda impossible, but that goes for every language

I think getting the questions right by intuition is better than using grammar knowledge. when you speak out loud to see which one sounds correct or use intuition it shows you're actually street smart, not only book smart that has little to no practice

I got 15/15. I am a 2 year old from Antarctica and English is my 1028th language. My mother tongue is Amharic and I've practice English for merely 2 minutes. I'm a bit of a slow learner but taking baby steps is the key to consistency.
I've not even been born and I already speak 1500 languages, my mother tongue is not even from planet Earth so all of you are a bunch of losers although I'm not directly implying it. Btw I speak all of them without attending to any lessons and everything I know is through sheer intuition.
I'm a native English speaker [not American] and hit 15/15 on this test. However, I did so not by comprehending the grammatical structure of the question, but by natural intuitive reflex. I'm professionally qualified and do not recall any classes where we were taught the sort of grammatical rules that are exercised in this lot of questions - we had basic grammar taught and then we "learnt by experience". I don't really remember many "rules" that I've been taught at school. I've come to the point where I just choose the answer based on if it sounds right to me. It almost always works for me.
I think this is the way I made it through all English classes because I always got good grades even in college but I don't even know what a proverb or many other words mean.

Same. At first, I was failing. But I read a lot of novels and comics in English over break. My English improved rapidly. Rather than memorizing grammar and other rules, I chose whichever sound more natural and right. If I tried to understand the grammar and rules behind it, I only get more confused. Though it's not always working (especially if it focused on a single subject and had complex variations than what I used to), it managed to carry me to be one of the top scorer.
I'm a native English speaker, but seeing the technicalities of this language spelled out like this gave me a new perspective on just how difficult learning English to a fluent level as a second language really is. there are some aspects of English, like weird spelling and conjunction irregularities, that I've thought about from the perspective of a learner, but I never really considered how many obscure little rules there are that are second-nature to me but would feel random and confusing to a non-native speaker.
I mean it could have been a lot harder.I am romanian and our grammer is one of the hardest thing you can learn but for me It was quite easy. So english grammer is nothing compared my language grammer. But the hardest thing for me is not writing , grammer and listening it is actually speaking .I have this kind of balkan accent that I do not want to have. @@mihnea4924 Honestly, most native speakers like hearing people speak with different accents, as long as your speech is understandable. If you want to reduce your accent, then I recommend studying some phonetics and try shadowing audio from your preferred dialect of English. 😊
It depends on your first language. Being a native French speaker, it was actually pretty easy for me to reach fluency in English after the age of 25 (while attending university and working in the US). I recently scored a 8.0 on the IELTS exam
12/15 from Kashmir (a civilization within the Himalayas). I've never met a native English speaker in my entire life. I learned English by watching yt content, movies, and reading books. We underestimate the contributions of this language in helping people communicate globally and making diverse knowledge more accessible through translations.
English isn't my first language and I sucked at it when I first learned it, but at around 4th grade I started getting into reading English novels (or young adult fictions at the time) and my grammar improved drastically. I took this test for fun and can't even remember what "present perfect tense" meant but I scored 15/15 from intuition. Reading really does help improve English vocabulary in a lot of ways.
Hahaha it was the same for me, got 13/15 just by picking the answers that sounded right. I've never studied english formally, but I love to read fiction and I talk regularly with some friends in english. Nice to know that I managed to make it to C1
I can definitely say the same even as a native English speaker. I chose a large portion of the correct answers ( or what “sounded right” to me) based on things I’ve read in books and heard aloud.
Same here! I learned English in a institute, and once I got to about 4th grade I started to watch videos in english, wich helped me a lot especially with listening and phrasal verbs
As a non native speaker I often just go by my gut and pick what feels right. Question 2 and 3 are good examples. I’m not quite sure what gradually means and I don’t know what a third conditional is but because I’ve got some experience with the language I can confidently pick the right answer by just going with what feels right. And 90% of the time I’m right
Same, i mostly learnt english from watching english TV and reading english articles. I have no idea about the grammar rules, or the why. The right answers, just sounds right and the wrong answers seem odd. I just went with what i would say myself, and that worked reasonably well
As a native english speaker, I’ve found that most of the non-native speakers I’ve interacted with on the internet have a better grasp of grammar and conventions than a lot of the other native speakers I know. English is such a weird language with so many strange rules and idioms, and I don’t envy anyone who has to learn it - serious kudos to everyone here! I got the answers correct, but not because I memorized the rules or even learned them in school for the most part. I just know what “sounds correct,” which I guess is the advantage you get as someone who grew up speaking it.
I am not a native speaker but I spent most of my life using English, we were taught all these rules in school and I got quite a good grasp on them in school, but if you were to ask me anything past the tenses I would have no idea what to say. I've used English so much at this point that I just choose what sounds right. I personally think that is the moment you reach true fluency in a language. Once you can not only think in that language, but also choose what to say based on what sounds good, not what grammar says is correct.
What "sounds correct" is also how I did it and I am not a native speaker either. Grammar rules are already hellish in my language I would never have been to learn AND remember the same stuff in English. Listening is how I know "intuitively" to use them just like you.
I tend to use so much English nearly every day that I get to the point where I have heard or seen the phrase or sentence somewhere, so choosing the sentence what feels right makes more sense. At least it does for me. And I'm not a native speaker either
Well, i'm a native German. But 90% of my internet content is in English, so i have to understand it. On my opinion, English is the easiest spoken language you can communicate with. No complicate grammar with different endings in the nouns, just one article for everything, and last but not least the omnipresence of this language in our western civilization so after all you don't have to be a native speaker to be fluid.
From my experience in learning languages, english is truly one of the easiest languages to learn. I mean, you see it everywhere, in the streets, the movies, tv shows, in every country (at least in europe). My native language is french and I've had to learn german pretty early in school because I live in Switzerland, and the most spoken language there is german. I must tell you, these 2 languages are muuuuch more harder to learn than english :) In english, you can most of the time just know when it sounds correct, like you said, while in french or german it's really hard to be able to guess which phrase or word "sounds right", you have to learn the grammar rules first

I’m not a native speaker, but I mostly learned English out of intuition, hearing what is said around and thinking “well that sounds about right”. I can’t remember all the English formulae but can easily come up with examples for them.

@@shoutitallloud it doesn't make much sense, for example: you can say "i will leave my mobile data "on" just in case you need to contact me", the purpose of "in case" is doing something to prevent the eventuality of something else happening (i.e if you don't have your mobile data on and somebody needs to contact you, he won't be able to *ignore the fact that you can call them it's just an example haha*), so lending someone a book "in case" they return it back literally makes no sense at all and it just shouldn't be used in this context
@@shoutitallloud As a native English speaker, if you were to use 'in case' I would think that the sentence means 'I will lend you the book, so that you have a book if you return it' which doesn't make any sense. After thinking, for a moment, I would probably understand what you meant but it would 'trip me up'. Generally, 'in case' means something along the lines of 'to prepare you for something that might happen', like 'Take this gun, in case you are attacked' or 'Take a jacket, in case it rains'.
Native here. While “poorly” is technically correct, most people would never actually say that. I have never met anyone who has ever said “I’m feeling poor/poorly.” I didn’t even know that was a phrase that people used until I watched this video.
13 out of 15, I still have much to learn. My level is estimated as completed B2, so I'm aimed at C1. That test was a really helpful warm-up before my studying session!

15/15 ☺️ I took the FCE like 10 years ago when it only credited B1, and I did get a high score, but I haven’t properly studied English since then. Reading in English is always a great way to practice!
@@aestheticcine2102 I sat on an FCE examination on May and the results are coming out today! Also, I've already received the ECCE certificate and I passed with flying colours. Rumours say that it's easier than FCE, but I don't know.. My teacher also informed me that if I get A, I'll be rewarded with a C1 certificate and I'm hopeful for it.
@@EmreFez your teacher is right. If you get overall 140 points for all skills, you will pass with Grade A (equivalent to C1). If you don't get A, don't worry. Just a language test, it cannot measure your intelligence. Also, remember that you are a bilingual one. Wish you all the best!
I’ve been an English teacher for 9 years: Question #10 could be a or b depending on the context. If you reported the speech immediately after it happened and/or while you are still doing the action, then a would be correct, not b. The verb doesn’t change if the statement is still true. For another example: “It’s difficult to get to our house”…”She said it’s difficult to get to their house”
A is accepted but not actually correct. The point of a reported speech is to restate something that was said by you or someone else in the past. B will always be the most correct.
You’re right. It depends if the action is already finished or still in progress. If the action was finished in the past then you should use past tense in the second part of the sentence, however if the action is still ongoing then you cannot chage the the second part to past.
You know what, the more I think about it, Sam K is right. It really does depend on the context. I still think for question #10 and these specific set of answers, in a test, B is more correct than A most of the time. But change the question to "what is your job? He asked", You would say "he asked me what my job is" for a job you're still currently working at, and you would say "he asked me what my job was" for a job you have already quit.
As soon as I saw "Present Perfect" mentioned, I knew I wasn't going to get a 15/15, even though I somehow managed to get a C2 in the CEA exam. I think I have never really thought about English technically, most difficulties I had in HS were related to the technical knowledge of grammar and tenses. Good refresher though.
I got a little worried when I saw that question too because I was like "I have no idea what present perfect means". Then I read through the sentences and got it right because it was the only one that actually made sense haha
Same thing for me, lol. The only other thing I got wrong was the "nick of time" question. Probably only because I have never heard the word "nick" before nor did I hear the phrase itself.
IMO Referring to grammar rules in these tests is a mistake. I say this because I don't think there is a correlation between knowing the rules and actually knowing how to speak properly. For example my native language is Portuguese and I'd say my Portuguese level is very high (duh :P) but I don't know *any* Portuguese grammar rules at all (ok, maybe a bit of an exaggeration). I've always found it curious that when I talk with friend from foreign countries, who are learning Portuguese, they know the rules much better than I do, yet they fail at applying them, I don't know what the rules are called, when I look at a sentence in Portuguese I just immediately understand whether it's correct or not. But if you ask me what is the verb form, hell if I know :D

I got 15/15, and honestly, I am glad that I didn't ignore this video. English is my second language and I've been learning it from a very early stage of my life. I used to be a specialized English student in middle school and is blessed to have a friend to frequently practice spoken English daily, so grammar and fluency came to me quite naturally. However, I always feel like I don't really deserve my results, and constantly struggle with the thought that I am not as good as I was expected to be by my friends and family, that all I gained from is passive learning rather than my own strives and effort. It is truly a hell of a burden which keeps me well away from furthering my understanding of English and my eagerness to learn other languages. Taking this test and aced it after a very long time not studying English due to a lack of motivation and time (I started taking up French not too long ago), I have found a much-needed sense of relief and the reassurance that I still somewhat own my English knowledge, that it is there, and it is mine. Hearing all the technical explanations and terms that I either don't know or can't seem to recall as well as before reminds me of the reason why I stick with English from the start and my choice of major as English Studies: my fascination for English and the joy of discovering new depths of things. I might just be a random user and my silly little storytime comment is only one in thousands, but this experience means a lot to me and one that I am really grateful for. To be fair enough, I think I'm not at C1 level yet. Although I got 12/15, this test mainly consists of grammatical knowledge. C1 requires you to have a large vocabulary, which I'm building now, and to be able to talk about a variety of topics, which I cannot do yet.
A good idea is to read novels in english or watch tv shows in english with the english subtitles. You can then write some expressions or words you didn't know in a notebook while doing that so that you can understand a word/expression with the context in which it is used :)
14/15, it was the "he asked me what I was doing" that tripped me up. Because if I'm still doing what he asked me about, it would be present tense. But overall this was really easy, thank you Swedish school system teaching us from pre-teens

studying english (i'm from russia) for 6 years. My current level in the language school is B2, but I got 10/15 here, mostly because of my intuition which formed during last 2 years when I was surfing English internet. It really gives a huge advantage in learning language. I haven't learnt much grammar, I've just read a big amount of english texts about themes I was interested in. Recently, I found out that I even can watch English RU-vid videos and understand almost everything without subtitles. This feeling is priceless.

It makes more sense if you've learned about it in class or something, but I'd venture that even a lot of native English speakers struggled with that question. Most people would likely understand what you meant no matter which one you chose but on an English test like this, only one is correct.

This was extremely easy for me (not meant as bragging!), and I was a bit disappointed because I felt it wasn't challenging enough, but I see in the comments that that isn't the case for most people. I am Norwegian, started learning English at 7. I'm learning Greek as an adult and that is incredibly difficult in comparison!
actually, this is only grammar. to be fully certified at a level in the CEFR, you need to blend grammar in the use of 4 skills. this is when the obstacles kick in!

I have scored a 14/15, as a non native English speaker. I am from the Netherlands, for most of us English is our 2nd language. So I am proud of myself that I have such a good score.
First of all, my mother tongue is Arabic. I have been learning English for 3 years straight, and I can safely say that I am on my way to master the language. Watched this as a native English speaker who grew up and lives in the South and who adores language. Missed the last one because we just don't convey feeling bad like that in my dialect. Southerners say things like "I'm feeling rough" or "I'm feeling puny," and I think the uses of adjectives in these dialectical cases are what tripped me up, since I'm not used to using adverbs!

I officially got my C1 English level certificate last year (I was going for the B2 so it was a very glad surprise) and I only got the conditionals wrong since they're still somewhat confusing to comprehend in some sentences. Coming from a moderately difficult language (Portuguese), I was able to score 14/15. I've learned a lot from the English courses I've attended, but by primarily watching English videos on RU-vid, that knowledge became almost second nature. Kinda wish my speech wasn't as rusty as it is, guess I have to take some time to practice it.

Same! I scored 14 and q10 made me feel anxious because I didn't realize that it was practically the same with q1! I come with Russian since birth and I only made progress in late 2020 early 2021, even though I've been practicing it since elementary school but I quickly dropped it off. Especially when it comes to writing because that is something that I rarely do except for English classes in School but other than that it's mostly listening and reading for me. I'm a Brazilian Native speaker and I got 12/15, I learned english with videogames, songs and videos on youtube, I was able to answer correctly most of the questions just answering what sounds better to me, which is cool, 'cause I can become more familiar with the language

Hey I got 15/15 even though this test was designed to be c1 , this test was far from a level of a native speaker . Let's take me as an example.I am almost on the brink of reaching C1 but these questions are for someone at a B2 level
I guess youre from vietnam.i think these questions are easy for vietnamese learners bcz its grammatical tests.you know what i mean😂😂.vietnamese learners are very good at grammar bcz we use most of our time in school and university just to learn grammar 😄
I got 0/15. I'm a native speaker that is so old as the English language. I've been with all kinds of English speakers my whole life. Currently I'm THE English linguistics professor and working at Yale, Harvard, MIT, Princeton all at the same time. I've published all the existing and soon to exist articles about English language. I believe I'm the fastest learner to exist because I acknowledge efficiency is the key and taking baby steps is a waste of time

I am 15 years old. As an Indian who has been studying in English medium, I got 15/15 which is definitely what I wanted! Watching English movies and shows has helped me a lot!!
Got 15/15 even though English is my 3rd language and I only started “learning” it 5 years ago. School didn’t help, but the Internet sure did. It’s crazy how effective input and constant exposure to a language is. 4 years ago I was proud of myself for reading a kids' book in English, now I can read classics without too much trouble… I wish learning other languages was that easy as well.
Took the test to see if I'm considered 'advanced' or not and got a full score. I'm pretty sure you need to do an oral and written test as well, not just multi choice in order to get properly placed. It's an indication at least. Thanks for the video
As a non native English speaker, for me English is not that hard grammatically. You can easily memorize some rules and deduct the rest just by your experience in reading. I can say that English has one of the easiest grammars (even when myself make many mistakes)

I recently finished my entrance exam, and I got C1 or above as a result. Rather than being fascinated, I was devastated because I'm confident enough that my English is really poor. And our results will determine our class, and I'm beyond terrified because I would fail my class.
Wow. I got 11 out of 15. Regardless I've never heard before some of the phrases from this test. I suppose, it's because I don't learn any rules, just use English therefore I can feel logic of the language
11 out of 15, I think that studying English with the books is not so bad idea, but also when I started to practice my English by translating texts, I started to understand all nuances that helped me to talk in it more fluently.
A good idea is to read novels in english or watch tv shows in english with the english subtitles. You can then write some expressions or words you didn't know in a notebook while doing that so that you can understand a word/expression with the context in which it is used :)
@@daphpunkk especially, it is better if you use dictionary, because it helps you to memorize words and also you are searching for it from many words, so you make something to memorize it and it really effective
As a native English speaker and only knowing English, I am quite happy I scored 15/15. I would be embarrassed with myself if I didn’t. To me it was extremely easy but I can definitely understand why it can be confusing to anyone who isn’t a native English speaker.
I learnt English for 9 years until 2019 when I passed the CAE and haven’t used the language ever since. Videos like this are motivating cause I could answer every question not only by intuition but also understanding what was going on in each sentence. I should practice more often but I’m glad I haven’t forgotten most of it😅
@@federicomiron Learnt and learned are the same exact past tense of learn, don't listen to this fool. It's just a regional spelling difference, a feature of some dialects. Here where I live in California, we tend to flip-flop between the two. I know Brits & American southerners generally say 'learnt'.
15/15 I’ve learned the basics of the English language through school, but I actually started to develop a “feeling” for the language when I began to consume English media. Where I’ve honestly learned more than in class.
Same. My English classes in school always felt pretty "basic". Most of my experience with English comes from spending a lot of time reading stuff in the internet and chatting with others.

Having studied English for around 7 years (9-16) and after a total of 20 years of real-life practice both in a non-English and English environment, scoring 15/15 makes me quite happy. No time, effort or money wasted.
I´m a native Brazilian as well, I got 12/15 which makes me happy, I can speak english really well sometimes but it largely depends if I´m feeling comfortable or not.

i'm italian and instead of all my friends that do exams to be better english i did 13/15 without doing any exam in my whole life. this demostrates how english is taught bad at school, you have to learn it in your own and understand it in your own and school doesn't know how to do this

I'm 14 and a non-native speaker and I got 15/15, as a non-native speaker, we don't usually learn this in everyday conversation or at school. I remember learning the terms and rules of usage such as past perfect, present perfect, etc. But the concept never stuck which me. I mostly just read books and talked to people via the internet and became fluent in English. Some of my friends took this test and then suggested it to me, and they got scores ranging from 11 to 13. They used their intuition and said "this one sounds good" the same as me, but subconsciously, I remembered that some of the words just don't make sense together. So even though we relied on our intuition for the test, taking some classes and practicing will definitely take you a long way.
As a native speaker, I don't know why I'm here, I don't know what the question is even asking, but I do know what the answers are somehow. Learning English seems like it would be extremely hard, good job to anyone here who can even read this comment without English being their first language. That's impressive.
it's really not, that's why there are so much people who learn it by themselves (me for example) a far more complex language is portuguese or even italian, and far more so spanish
