I did not expect that!
This bow is just amazing, especially considering the price.
A joy to shoot, up to 32” draw. Durable and perfect for “survival”
Have a look, I know the video is a bit longer but you will see why :)

Finally, someone is making something close to what I consider the top "survival" takedown bow, the Stream-eze bow! Solid fiberglass, short 56", rounded cross section, english style, with fake, plastic horn nocks. And it's a takedown. I may have to order one! Thanks for sharing, Armin! Steve

Was tempted to buy this bow three weeks ago just for fun. It costs almost nothing where I live. Longbows are still very much correct for asiatic archery as they have been found in graves of the less wealthy in the same time period and locations as composite bows. Vice-versa for Europe, composite horn bows were always available, just not common for the average soldier to own one as they cost much more to make than a longbow.

A bunch of American companies made good cheap fiberglass bows from fishing rods around 1950. Stream Eze by South bend fishing tackle. They sold for about 7 dollars then and now about 70 dollars and still shoot well over 50 years later. A .5 inch arrow pass.

I snagged one of these a few months ago and it's been a ton of fun. I got tired of my self bows snapping when I practice in subfreezing temps. I've been seeing more and more fiberglass longbows in the traditional ELB style around. I think it's fantastic given the price of a yew or ash bow, or the time needed to tiller one yourself.

@tristantheafflicted
@tristantheafflicted Год назад
I've got one of these things at 55lb. I do love it and it's fun but the limbs are heavy so the efficiency is low. Considering how surprisingly fast fiberglass limb horsebows are, I would love this with reflexed/recurved tips/shorter limbs/deeper&narrower limbs for the extra speed. I'm not sure that's feasible for this producer, but fiberglass really shines for more stressed bow designs.
@Jazzberrytpt1
@Jazzberrytpt1 Год назад
Longbows aren't as efficient as recurves or reflex deflex design anyway. But it does feel and shoots like a longbow. Fiberglass horse bows have wide flat limbs, that's why they are more efficient.
@tristantheafflicted
@tristantheafflicted Год назад
@@Jazzberrytpt1 It's actually the reverse. Wider and flatter limbs are "less efficient" on a bow than something narrow and thick, but can bend further, which is why they're often reflexed to get more out of them when they're done with stronger materials. I've shot some wooden longbows before, and these are definitely sluggish per pound in comparion (since fiberglass is that much denser). These fiberglass rod-bows have a lot more to give, so I would like to have a version with this sort of limb but with some reflex on the tips.

I like the look of the fibreglass Crimean Tartar bow that Alibow has and have thought of getting one. I've never used a longbow and saw this one on ebay and am also looking at *maybe* getting one at 55lb draw. It's only about 130 dollars Australian and that includes delivery. With the exchange rate that's not bad really and it would be quicker and maybe easier than buying direct from Alibow. Just wondering what spine arrows you use with your 55lb? Thanks.
@tristantheafflicted
@tristantheafflicted Год назад
@@hoodatman I've been using spine400s at 31.5 inches and honestly think they're too stiff. I can't say for sure., but maybe some spine600 would be better. Honestly though I would probably recommend the horsebow if you want a *better* bow. Maybe for really heavy draw weights these would be better.
@hoodatman
@hoodatman Год назад
@@tristantheafflicted Thanks for that. Yeah I really like the look of the Tatar bow that Alibow has and Armin gave it a good review a fair while ago. Is this a realistic option for a decent bow? They are so cheap that it makes me automatically question it... But I can also imagine trad archers refusing it because of the materials used to make it... But I also think that maybe it is that cheap to make a half decent longbow out of FRP, they may be more uniform and predictable than wood ones and really for people who just want to shoot a longbow, on a budget this would be a better option than a modern wood laminate. I get that he's impressed by it, but how does it stack up next to a wooden one. It's easy to be impressive for the price when it costs £50 but how does it compare to, what you should expect from a £250 or £500 longbow. I could push myself to get a more expensive longbow but would I have been cheating myself by getting a wood laminate when there is a decent option this cheap?

The English Longbow ... A simple weapon ... I like it! This of course comes with all kinds of modern features (Takedown, Fiberglass strength and durability), and it was good to see you shooting thumb release with it ( it seemed faster with thumb release) and having the arrow on the right .... Med release people won't be happy, You aren't supposed to shoot longbows like that you naughty man... but that being said I usually shoot my Varang lux longbow with the arrow on the right, but I use Slavic Release, it just seems more natural.
@alexanderflack566
@alexanderflack566 Год назад
I don't really care about the release; I shoot both with my Hun bow and my Qinghai, but can only manage Mediterranean with my longbow because my ability to thumb draw currently only goes up to about 80#. However, this Alibow isn't an English longbow. Even ignoring the nocks, it's significantly shorter than the shortest English longbows were (even the Varang Lux is slightly too short, in addition to having self nocks instead of horn).
@alexanderflack566

@Lawrie Conole I didn't say that it was, I've just heard people erroneously describe it as such and wanted to head that off. ...And you could use it as a survival fishing rod as well.😂 You just discovered this for me, I’m pretty sure I’ll get one for the price; thx.! ...Though still my opinion is that since you implemented the 10 point rating system, your small critics could be better highlighted in the scoring. ...For example here: based on what you said I would have expected that for the build you will give a 9 (due to the brass parts) and the basic feel an 8, due to the vibration and bending in the handle. Still a very good score for such a cheep bow, but at least would show a difference with - for example - the Szimeiszter Horsebow, just to name one. ...Though I understand it too: you love so much bows, that if you really like one you don’t have the heart to take away points.😊

50 dollar, ok! But shippingcost to the Netherlands are 50,50 dollar. So the bow will cost 100 dollar. No selling in Europe.

Gotta say, for 50 bucks, that's probably the best value bow out there. I don't even mind a little gold with black. Looks good 😁 Ahd if they make the hankyu, I'm buying it for sure 😂

Fascinating, especially for the price. Armin, at reasonable poundage, do you think this is a cost effective bow for teaching?
@ArminHirmer
@ArminHirmer Год назад
could be a good bow for teaching, I fear that the lower the poundage the more shake you will get. Wait a bit soon there will be the perfect starter bow coming :)

Agree, that’s a reasonable survival bow ☺️👍 To my taste I like the Tiller Ballista! The winch is silent and one can check poundage and speed after release. Yes, the device could be mounted higher, for example on a table. Regarding wooden arrows: I have let explode all three cedar wood arrows on a foam target at 5m distance. The professional wooden arrow builder told me not to shoot at targets closer than 15m… I think your arrows broke due to target was too close, sadly… Thank you for the interesting review, dear Armin! 👋☺️

Torba training was done closer than 5 m throughout history so I'm guessing they either dealt with broke arrows or something else. I use bamboo arrows cus they at least can take some punishment wood arrows cannot.
@agamagreen
@agamagreen Год назад
@@Daylon91 I guess, their targets had been soft, like hay. Wooden arrows get destroyed on foam targets in close distance, unfortunately. No problem for carbon arrows.
@Daylon91

@@agamagreen Wood arrows also get destroyed in hay targets as easily. Heavier wood arrows might be more durable.

it's a theory about new materials (polycarbonates, fiberglass) : the shape and the density are the reason of the proximity to original constructions (wood, bamboo) this bow seem to justify this theory, very surprising results, and for a price.....

Excellent, I've just ordered the 35lb version. Looks well designed as opposed to other takedown bows where you either have to bolt the limbs or fasten the handle around the join. Hope its a fun as it looks
