Lovely gate that will last for many years. I was glad to see you wear ear defenders later in the video. My ears constantly ring from forgetting to wear them on too many occasions.

Get one of those spring loaded tension wheels from Aigner and give those plastic feather boards to your chickens. You have all those F rail bars. And get a 1.1tpi Starrett blade for your band saw. Going with Aigner will reduce your push from 40 lbs to 7 lbs. on those big timbers. You will band cut those timbers in 1/5 the time. Money well spent.

That’s impressive! I love oak but it’s not cheap here in the USA. Our wood gates here consist of Cypress, Cedar, or treated pine (or a combination). Would love to build an oak fence gate. Inspired. Great work!

Can everyone feel my tool envy from where you are at? I'd soooooo love that much space too! :D ........ Good job man. I was looking for a vid on do's and don'ts in oak gate construction, so this isn't the vid for me, but great job anyway! :D..... I have a load of second hand solid oak flooring I'm looking to mill back and convert in to a small, simple front gate. I guess I wondered weather it was essential to frame it to allow for expansion , or could it just be battened and glued in the tongue and groove? (two at 90, and a 45).

I would say that birdsmouth in the middle rail is the wrong way around. The short cut should be on the long edge (of the diagonal) so it would stop from slipping sideways. Remember this is under pressure. That domino is just to keep it flush (should be).
@ManorWood
@ManorWood 4 года назад
When loaded or under pressure overtime that bird mouth will tighten
@jeffeverde1
@jeffeverde1 3 года назад
@@ManorWood 15:02 Gravity wants the latch stile to drop - and as it drops the bottom of the upper brace wants to move towards the hinge stile and the top of the lower brace wants to move towards the latch. In timber framing, you'll sometimes find birds mouth joints used in this same scenario on knee joints. The birds mouth is on the outside of the hypotenuse to prevent the brace from shifting away from the right angle. That said, your domino is in shear load across it's 28mm width. Your hinge screws or hinge post mounts will likely fail before you shear that domino.

Great video - thank you, really enjoyed it. I'm interested to know what's caused the black marks around the handle (visible at 15:12 timestamp) ? Is it the ironmongery reacting with the oak? I think the black ironmongery looks stunning, but people recommend stainless steel to avoid staining. What options do people suggest?

Great job, love watching the videos on your channel. Can I ask, we’re they only 2mm packers you used for the gaps between the t&g boards? I recently used 4mm packers and still had loads of swelling through the winter on an oak gate. Does using 2 s/s nails in each board help? I only used 1 in the centre of each board. Keep up the great work.

Nice build, would have thought you would have used your custom 3" or 4" dominoes on the stiles, was your extractor on when routing? like you attention to detail as in the groove in the stiles, most people just rebate that and nail it, classy

Band saw; do you have a band with fewer teeth? I have a 27" running a 1.25 with 1.1TPI and that rips amazingly. It would be nice to have two band saws with different blades for certain tasks.

Looks great Andy. As a matter of interest what sort of moisture content can you get away with for outside projects like a gate?
@ManorWood
@ManorWood 4 года назад
In the UK I would say around 20% maybe more in winter, Even 28 if its wet cold out gives the timber time to naturally dry before the dry spells in summer or direct sunlight as well affect things

I am doing a series on these types of gates this is the dominant gate , fast clean simple . the next gate, Is pegged mortise and tenant. mortise cut with the domino tenants cut with spindle moulder . These are all on my own property to try and help people and myself see how this new joinery holds up against traditional methods..

Beautiful Gate! The glue up of all the gate frame pieces must have been your biggest challenge of the build. What do you think about using epoxy for the glue up? When I built my gate I had to try several different dry fit methods to find the the quickest assembly method. Some of my dry fit tries would not result in an assembled gate frame. Once I decided on a dry fit assembly plan I could do a clamping plan.
@ManorWood
@ManorWood 4 года назад
Cheers man, hopefully you could say that I did a dry fit earlier on with just a single domino in each connection by the time we got to the glue up I knew everything fitted. Then with epoxy there is no rush. Clean ups easier let it cure they plane,sand or scrape it off

Looks great. How long does the "exterior hardwax oil" last? I've been using Osmo UV protection oil (over a coat of Danish for colour).
@goonboi7292
@goonboi7292 4 года назад
How is it holding up? Any fading? Do you need to reapply every so often? Does it protect the wood from moisture?
@ColinWatters
@ColinWatters 4 года назад
@@goonboi7292 The Osmo UV protection oil seems to last much longer than Danish oil. However it also prevents the oak darkening leaving new/green oak too white for my preference. So I've been using a coat if Danish to turn it a honey colour then the Osmo to protect it. Danish oil needs recoating every year in the UK to prevent it going black whereas Osmo seems to last 2-3 years before needing another coat. Products like Sadolin Extra last longer (>4 years) but are more like a varnish than an oil/wax.
