English or Native Language for Your Youtube Channel?

For the longest time, before I started my RU-vid channel, I was worried that I'll be judged by the public for my accent. I was worried that my North American friends would judge me for having a Malaysian accent, and I was worried that my Malaysian friends are going to think that I have a fake American accent (now that I think about it, it feels ridiculous but I was there!)
So I didn't get started - yes, the fear of judgement and not knowing what language to speak actually held me back from launching my channel. I totally understand how scary it is to start your RU-vid channel - to put yourself out there and available for the public to criticize. And I also understand the struggle of wanting to use a language you are familiar with, or a language that can potentially reach out to a bigger reach.
In this video, I shared my two cents on whether you should speak in English or your native language for your RU-vid channel. I hope you find this useful! 🙂

Hi, I‘m so glad that I have found your video, even if my „problem“ is somehow more difficult: I already own my RU-vid channel since five years and have built up my community by speaking german. So on one hand I can‘t just swich my language because I think much people would be disappointed. On the other hand I start to realize that the german language may be a reason why my channels growth has slowed down and I will never be able to reach much more people. So I am thinking about starting a second, english speaking channel. I was even thinking about expanding my contet, because my maintopic (amusement parks) for sure also restricts my target group. But I‘m not sure wheater I would have the time to bring enough content on both of my channels. I spend really much time on producing my videos because I want to get the best out of them. I don‘t know if I would get happy with a second channel. Maybe it‘s just time to accept that I can‘t grow any further on RU-vid. Or maybe I should just give this a try. I‘ll only find out if this works if I try! ;-) I‘m sorry. I didn‘t want to spam your video, but it was nice to share my thoughts. :)

I am from Québec and this choics is SO HARD to make. My first language is French but i live half the time in Vancouver where i speak English and 93% of my viewers are English speaking. French is only 3.7% of my viewers! I wish that number was more balanced. Subtitling is so much work. What's even harder is that i often mix French and English in the same video, sometimes even in the same sentence. That's just how we live here. We are a French-speaking people surrounded by an English world. I'm 100% fluent in both. I find that there isn't ANY video on YouTub eabout my kind of situation. Everyone has a language they are better at, so the choice is easy. I love making French videos, it feels more natural and i have less jump cut editing to do with less pauses, mistakes, hesitations, "um" "uh" "like" etc. to cut out, but subtitling them takes 60-90 minutes per 10 minutes of video (and mine are often long). I thought about generating the subtitles by RU-vid and letting it be automatically translated but the AI makes so many mistakes. I have over 750 videos on my channel so if i wanted to translat ethem all i would spend the rest of my life doing that. It's really a dilemma and here it is also even political. I can be seen as a traitor by fellow French-Canadians because of the history here. I value my language and speak and write it well and protect it, but if i made no videos in English, there are a ton of people who would not have access to them. So i think i will just keep alternating them (but stick to one language per video), and pick the language that fits better each video. It will require a little more planning which is difficult because i mostly do vlogs LOL. I do watch channels in languages i do not understand at ll, with subtitles on *Korean, Russian, Chinese* and you're right, i watch them because i like their stories and style and i got attached to the people making the videos. Thanks for making me feel better about it. I'm always in such a conundrum about this!!!! 🇨🇦

Hi, I identify myself very much with your childhood. My father was Cantonese and my mother was Salvadorean, so I was born in El Salvador and Spanish is my native language, never learned Cantonese and I regret that very much. Besides, I did my masters in the US and I believe I learned enough English to make a channel in English. Anyway, I have a RU-vid Channel in Spanish and after watching your video I am very much into the idea of making a channel in English with the same material as the Spanish channel. Thanks and regards.

Ohh, I use both languages in my daily life and engage in both sides of communities, and it's hard for me to choose just one. The audience for my native language and for English is clearly VERY different. I understand that English might bring me more views since it's for wider audience, and I know English very well, so I'm pretty confident in my knowledge... But I wanna create the content that other people similar to me in my community could relate to, and I might also bring more views since I'm gonna be unique. Despite this, I fear that just because of who I am, I'm not gonna find a place for myself for the same reason - too unique. I was thinking about maybe having a bilingual channel - like, for example, sometimes I'm gonna do videos on English, sometimes on my native and both will have subtitles for the opposite language, so everyone subscribed still will be able to understand me & I will feel myself more free. Does it sound good? Or it's gonna put people off ??

For me it's okay to use native language given if you want to niche down to particular ethnic group of people. Example you can use mandarin if you target chinese audience, hangul if you target korean, tagalog if you target filipino, and so fort, So it depends of what type of audience you want to.

I‘m planning on starting a channel in the near future (I had ones before but I was like 10-15 and that was really embarrassing lmao) and I was really struggling wether to make it in English or German. I mean on one hand I want to target the biggest audience possible for myself, which means making the channel in English would allow me to reach more people all over the world. On the other hand, I also want to achieve something locally or more like in my local language and it’s easier because there’s not AS MUCH competition as within the English speaking channels. Ultimately I think I will create two channels, one english, one german and see which one I like best or maybe even keep both I mean it doesn’t hurt to have two channels right? It would definitely be more stressful, especially if you actually build a huge audience but until that day comes (if it ever does) I‘m just gonna do both.

It's been 2 years since I've been uploading videos to my YT channel in Russian language. And now - out of a sudden - I realised: hey! why don't I just switch to English? So, does it mean I have to hide my previous videos that are in Russian? In order for YT algorithms understand I won't be speaking for Russian audience any more.
