I always find it funny when people say that British food is bad, the food is fantastic here, proper comfort food and I love the weather here too. I’m a farmers daughter and was always told that there is no such thing as bad weather just bad clothing. Great video though guys. X

@BigStib
@BigStib 2 года назад
@@anoldfogeysfunwell, it was seen as a more humane punishment (at a time of escalating crime in swelling British cities) than execution or imprisonment. The latter would often be on rotting prison hulks as Britain didn't go in for large prisons until later. You worked your (hard) time and could be emancipated, becoming a normal colonial subject. For many, it would have been better than a (short) life in the disease-ridden alleys of London, crushing labour in a dangerous mill or foundry, or a swift drop on a short rope. Penal codes had been made very harsh in this period as a deterrent to increased lawlessness. But a close look at the stats show it was more complicated in enforcement than people realise. Stealing from strangers, things that were purely for money not survival, and repeatedly were more likely to get you the top end tariff than a hungry person filching an apple where they lived. With few/no police, many offenders were turned in by informants, which happened more where they were strangers in a community or had reason for that community to want rid of them (rightly or wrongly). Things which threatened social order were harshly treated - riot and rebellion was common in this period. A significant proportion of the Australian transported fell into the 'political prisoner' category. The example of the threat of transportation for damage to a stone bridge would also be seen as reasonable. That would not have been a minor matter for all sorts of reasons, social and economic.

Mandarin (Chinese) has a similar structural form in where they place words to English. You know how in French and Spanish rather than say a Blue Cup, they turn it around "Cup blue" that kind of thing. In that regard Mandarin and English are actually similar , and without any tonal stuff like in Asian languages, non of the Masculine and Feminine in Latin based languages (French Spanish Italian Portuguese) so they just have to learn the English equivalent words, and worry less about grammar. Of course the rest is very different but there is so much English speaking TV and Cinema out of the UK and in particular the USA, many Chinese folk have a lot of exposure to English. It does not surprise me Chinese people tend to pick up English fast

I've heard this from all my co-workers.. (Who are from all over, Russia, Serbia, India, Ukraine, Italian, Portuguese, France, Greece, Turkey, etc) There are 3 types of English. The English you are taught to say, The English you are taught to read, and the English the English use. 3 Vastly different things.. They all say "English you are taught to say" is by far the easiest. and "English you are taught to read" is the hardest. but "English the English use" is the weirdest.

It’s true, us British believe you Americans have bastardised the English language. An example that stands out is aluminum instead of the correct aluminium, grey not gray, jail not gaol and so on . We love our American cousins but wish you’d speak/spell true English. Great channel guys, best wishes my cousins, from Britain 👍🇬🇧🇺🇸🇬🇧🇺🇸

Shepherds Pie. Steak & Ale Pie. Fish & Chips. Sausage & Mash with onion gravy. Beans & Cheese on toast. Full English breakfast. To name just a small selection of great British food. We didn't sustain a global empire for a thousand years by eating crap. British food is world domination sustenance. It wasn't until we started eating exotic stuff from all over the world that our empire receded. Coincidence? I think not.

Americans come pretty close to speaking English. We don`t end every sentence with "right now", every question with "huh", and our women don`t sound like wailing cats. Vivre le difference. In the UK words have been shortened for speed of typing, eg. merch for merchandise. These abbreviations are now entering the language as spoken words.

You do have some strange notions, lol. The average height in the UK, US and Australia is pretty much identical. British food nowadays is amongst the best in the World. Look at Michelin starred restaurants and the UK ranks equal 3rd in the World, equal with the US, behind France and Japan. Considering the US population is five times that of the UK's, that officially makes our restaurants five times better than yours! ;) More seriously, the American idea that British food is bad, largely stems from WW2 and the immediate post-war period, when millions of American service personnel were stationed in Britain, when the country was subject to severe rationing. Yep, the food wasn't great then, it's true but things began to change in the 60s and by the 80s and 90s British cuisine was excellent. The really funny thing, is that America has an appalling, worldwide reputation for bad food. ;) As for the weather, it's really not that bad. It's rarely too hot or too cold and although we have a reputation for rain, our average rainfall isn't that high. London's average rainfall, for instance, is lower than in Paris or New York, nether of which have the same reputation. We also don't tend to get proper tornados and hurricanes are incredibly rare and fairly weak as hurricanes go. I think most of the reputation stems from the fact that our weather is very changeable. We don't tend to have long periods of identical weather, day after day, week after week. Another common one is 'bad teeth'. In reality, Britain always ranks amongst the best in the World for dental hygiene and a couple of years ago was ranked number 1 in the World! There's a lot less emphasis on cosmetic dentistry than in the US, though that's changing, but our dental care and hygiene is excellent! :)

Southern english have more galic (french) DNA. In the North and scotland we have more scandanavian DNA (vikings) and are genrally taller. The south have always been taken care of by governments at the expense of the north, its the North, Scotland and the Irish who emigrated abroad over the years, to escape the London centric country that still exists today. It also extends to accents, southern Englanders and Recieved pronunciation consider themselves proper english speakers. In actual fact the southern accent is heavily influenced by galic accents, which is why the south and the french have the same "haw haw" undertones. The north have retained traditional english accents. Infact Gerodies, people from newacstle upon tyne, oftern considered one of the more "out there" dialects, have the most traditional english pronunciation left in the country, they even use some ancient roman words still today, such as "Hyem" for "home" and "gan" for "Going".... so youll regulary hear "Im gan hyem" in Newcastle, meaning "I'm going home", which has survived in the region for nearly 2000 years, wheras that traditional english can confuse southerners.

@5.31... Al mentions getting rid of the cane.... FYI We would get the cane in public school for poor behaviour and other savory excuses the teachers would come up with. It was a long bamboo rod or ruler or some other thin stick to whip the back of ur legs, ur knees and where I am from, it was across the hands. Im not sure when England stopped corporal punishment in school but here in Australia it was fazed out in the late 70's.

British weather is terrible - absolutely true - but the food isn't. The opposite in fact. On my travels, i've only found Italy, Thailand and India where the standard of eating out is as consistently high as the UK. Home cooking can be good and bad, like anywhere. Loads of classic British recipes are amazing but many folk seem to think it's just roasts and fish and chips because they don't understand the history of British cuisine. Saying British food is bad is about 25/30 years out of date and mainly because home cooking lost it's way after the war and the restaurant scene was also bad. Totally different now and anywhere doing bad food won't last 5 minutes.
