Yes!! I have been pondering how to do this without all the papers. I had gotten as far as using heavy starch, but I hadn't thought to put the plastic on the RIGHT side and fold the seam allowance UNDER! I was stuck on the habit of folding around a shape. I am going to try this on my current project tomorrow!

Genius! You can also use the regular paper pieces with this method but not have to use a thousand of them if you don't want to use plastic. I'm working on a grandmother's flower garden and I'm going to try this tonight! Thanks.

I have recently been bit by EPP hexies bug, but wasn't sure how to go about it. But when I found your video using this unique glue basting method, which is BRILLIANT by the way, it is now the ONLY method I use. I have a question though. Do you only machine sew all your hexies or do you ever hand sew them as well? Since you've come up with this brilliant method of glue basting, I was wondering if you have another unique method of machine and/or hand sewing them. Would you consider making a video in English on how you sew hexies together...pretty please.

I second that request. I love the idea of this, but I hand piece the epp and don't use a machine so i would love to see how you machine piece them. Thank you. Hugs,

This is genius!!! I have been using fusible interfacing in an attempt to replicate hexiforms, but I have dealt with paper too and I really dislike the paper method. I think this would be a great option, plus is reusable! I don’t have a special ruler for EPP so what I’m thinking about is to use those ye-olde plastic sheets you used in the 90s for projectors that you can put into inkjet printers (they still sell those, but I think there’s also shrink plastic available for printers) and print them directly on the plastic, that way I can get accurate shapes without templates. There’s lots of free printables for EPP, so the sky is truly the limit.

I had a thought. How well does this work with hand quilting? I am picturing having to wash at least some of the starch out first. If so, does that mean I would have to spend a year pressing seam allowances back down on the finished top before putting the layers together (YUCK.), or else basting the layers, then ever-so-gently washing the whole thing before quilting? 😬
@HenrikMundorf

you can leave the starch in. I never washed the finished version.

Another way to avoid papers that I have worked out myself - back the fabric with bondaweb, a light two sided vilene type product (this has different names in different countries). Peel off the paper backing completely when it has attached to the fabric. The fabric then looks a little glossy on the back and very slightly thicker. Cut your inner shapes from another fabric, maybe a simple white or something pre shrunk. Then pin the inner shape inside, against the shiny surface of the outer shape, cut from the bondawebbed fabric. Pin the outer edges around the shapes as usual, without tacking (basting). Very carefully press the edges onto the inner shape and the inner shape onto the decorative fabric. This makes a slightly thicker, finished hexagon with no papers to remove. If you use a very light fabric to start with, such as Liberty tana lawn, the finished shapes are still very light and the fabric is easier to work with than it would be if used over papers. Don't forget, you can also use plain fabric for the shapes and decorate them yourself either before or after cutting out, using fabric paints, or even machine or hand stitching. I tend to machine wildly with machine embroidery thread over a piece of fabric with bondawebbed backing - before cutting out the hexagons (use a small stitch, so they won't unravel when the shapes cut out, but if they do, it adds to the creative effect). Don't think you have to stick to conventional ways of doing things, try what feels right for you, some ideas will work, some won't but that is how we all grow in creativity!
@HenrikMundorf
@HenrikMundorf 2 года назад
nice idea too

Hexiform, is another way but it's already pre-cut into hexagons etc but you need to add glue to it.
