Great video, is it the same calculation if a screw is used instead of a bolt and nut?

The steps are similar. However, when calculating the screw and member stiffness, the length for grip is obtained differently. For bolted joint, the grip is the total thickness of the clamped members. For screwed joint, it is the equivalent grip we are looking for. Shigley's textbook has the details.

Why do you equate the tensile stress on the bolt to the proof strength for the fastener example here and then in the power screws example (lecture 18) you equate the Von Mises stress (the combined bending and shear) to the proof strength. Surely there is the same combination of stresses in the fastener as there are in the power screw?
