THANK YOU!!! This helped me tremendously. I am a widow and for the past 10 years I have been trying to learn about tools and teach my son. He is now heading to college and pursuing an Aviation Technology degree and we have been buying very expensive tools this totally helped us! We have read the comments below with some tips about taking photos and keeping an inventory list. You all Rock!!

Yeah if your going to invest in tools you should invest the effort of protecting them. I don't do good enough myself tbh. Glad your supporting your son!

Good tip Dan thanks I actually stepped up the enfraving process on my tools from the " buzz" engraver to a Drexel rotary tool with a ball style engraving bit to get a deeper And wider line on my tools I especially like the style when. Engraving plastic housings and will highlight that with a black paint pen i am a Woodworker by trade. And many of my power tools have the plastic cases on them i purchased a set of paint pens years ago. And the variety of colors in the. Set allows me the liberty of choosing a contrasting color to make it stand out more I will still use the "buzz" style engraver On smaller. Items like router bits and some hand tools When space is at a premium My Dad was a big advocate of engraving all of his belongings and as a kid. He liked my writing style and asked me to do most of his tools i inherited most of those tools and i. Still smile everytime i See that 40 year old engraving i put on with his Sears Craftsman engraver I'm sure was a rebranded Drexel, I actually still have it and it's original vinyl bag /case it came with in the 70s

I got a Dremel Stylo for Christmas and I didn't know what to do with it. This video was a great jumping off point! My snowblower and lawn mower are now safe.

Wish I saw this a week ago. I bought some stencils to mark with but the small stencil didn't eve allow a pen to fit. I tested first on an old $7 hatchet. I'll use this method for my new gear. I have tools that were my father's or grandfather's with initials and out means a lot. Adding to showing ownership, this is a bonus to hand down to my son. Trying tomorrow when it's light out. :)

A soldering iron or wood burner works even better on most plastic tools. Just don't huff the smoke/fumes that come off the plastic.

It's important to sign your tools. People will return your misplaced, borrowed, even stolen tool IF your name is on it. For the guy who has decided to keep your tool at least he has to think about you every time he uses the tool and suffer the shame when his buddies see your name in his toolbox.

I FINALLY DID IT! It looks amazing - I used a different font but yeah it does vibrate a lot. Be careful of where you want to place it, some are awkward spaces. I put an ID number, my full name, my phone number and that the item will not ever be given away or sold

FYI Take a picture of your tools serial number and then when it's stolen you enter your sereial number into the police department website and then if it's taken to a pawn shop you will get your tools brought back to you it only took 2 DAY'S LATER I GOT EVERYTHING BACK
@DPShopTalk

+Daniel Carlson great tip and great that you got all your tools back. I keep a tool inventory list of everything that I have with it's name, value, date purchased and serial number so that I have it all on record.

I put my name & # all over my tools to to deter thieves. We have a nice 55 in TV so I engraved my name & # on the back in big letters & #'s. I go a little overboard so thieves won't be interested. If you just engrave one small area they can just scratch it off, go big or lose your tools. I couldn't care less if it looks a little tacky. I put my name & # on my 16 ft ladder about 10 times from top to bottom...They're just tools, MY TOOLS !

Labels, what a great idea. What type of labels are you using? What font reads best?
@DPShopTalk

+Dawn beyersdorff they are just standard Avery labels and I use the Segoe Print font which I've found works well.

Has anyone used a brother P touch as an alternative to the Avery labels? Also, could the Dremel 4000 be an acceptable alternative to the dedicated engraver and if so, is there a preferred bit for aluminum and plastic, the two items I’ll be engraving (think snowblowers, shovels and generators). Great review btw.

@@eiriksvortevik5646 Hello there, no, I purchased a dremel engraver with supplied bit. Surprisingly, it works on just about everything I need it to. It came with a (more?) hardened bit for more difficult substrates. I do have Brother p-touch but this was too temporary for three prevention.

Not sure if you’ll see this but I can’t seem to even get the labels set up on Microsoft and am worried that the tiny size will be impossible to print - I want to put on the label my name, my own serial numbers for ID, but it won’t let me just have that information it demands a certain size and or will like add like so kept blank with information it thinks it should have and won’t let me Just have what I want down

What's the ideal speed on the tool to work best? Low or High?
@DPShopTalk
@DPShopTalk 3 года назад
It depends on the material you're engraving. For hard materials I use a high speed and for soft I use a lower speed.
@romocowboysfan

@@DPShopTalk I'm using hard plastic. Toys,Chargers,XBOX, etc.
@DPShopTalk
@DPShopTalk 3 года назад
I would maybe use a medium speed on things like that. I've also used high speed on plastic with good results so you could experiment a bit with speed and see what works best for you. In my experience the speed hasn't made a dramatic difference in how the tool performs.
