Early!!!! That's my biggest challenge especially for just day trips/day hikes. Thanks for the reminder to just get out the door and go and be done before the hottest part of the day!
As a double bypass recipient, being aware of how I’m feeling is critical. Some days I can conquer the world, others my body just says no. The key is listening, which I don’t always do so well.
Great tips. A sun umbrella is really essential for me when it gets over 80 deg or so. Loading up on fluids & electrolytes before and during the trip. I picked up my new pack for this reason. To have better back airflow so I don't overheat and heavier max carry load for water carries.
Yep to all of those - I admittedly have laid down in many creeks in an effort to cool off. I'll also go to wearing a bandana or something around my neck and soak that down in the creek, lake or water source. Every little bit helps.
Chafing is a miserable experience … I use body glide from the get go but in the summer I also take some Neosporin (or equal) w painkiller in it …. Wash the chafing parts spread on the Neosporin and within 20 mins or so relief 😊 yeh it’s a bit more weight but so worth it and you’re able to hike next day 👍 Thanks for the other advice … all great stuff ….
I will try to hike along water or trails with water crossings so I can get my feet and legs wet and even take a quick dunk to cool my core. (Quick dry shorts & shirts are necessary for this) Also I will hike with a cooling towel. I have a couple different sized FroggToggs Chilly towels and will bring one with me to lay over the back of my neck to help keep me cool. I will also wet the buff that I am wearing on my head to help keep me cool.
