I would say that the kangaroo pocket would be an advantage if it weren't made of a 10 fabric. With the material being that delicate, I'm not likely to carry much that might stress it. The same goes for a zipper. I tend to be more delicate with lighter zippers to reduce the chance of failure. The thing I really like about the jacket versus the pullover is that the jacket can be vented to the bottom, whereas the pullover always has a double layer of insulation over your abdomen. If you're not going to be around brush or rocks while needing them as outer layers, both are great options. Not being overly concerned about wetting them out from inside or out makes them more usable than down for me.

Thanks for the thorough review. What is your height/weight and what size is being shown in the video? Appreciate all of your content.

One thing, they use a single sheet of synthetic fill.. not patches trying to mimic down. That enables them to fit more in at a lighter weight. The caveat being.. looks a little strange initially. That’s an incredibly small price to pay for real warmth in the sticks. These are killer jackets anyone should have. I want one with a tougher face fabric like Pertex Quantum or whatever it’s called. With that said though, I’ve not seen one durability issue yet. A jacket made by triple crown 👑 folks is gonna be good

The Torrid Apex also saves the birds! It’s such a win win for me. I’m loving it.

Depends if you think about the petroleum-based microplastics the synthetic fill creates that will end up inside the birds.

Hi Alan 🙂 What do you usually carry in your pants and shirt/pullover/jacket pockets while hiking? You mentioned that you can fit some clothes in the huge front pocket. Have you ever done any day hikes without a backpack and just kept your gear (e.g. emergency poncho, rain skirt, hand warmers, etc) in all your pockets or attached to your belt and extra clothes (e.g. a fleece pullover) tied around your waist. I've seen plenty of day hikers do this in mild weather on easy trails. Many carry soft water bottles in their hands like trail runners typically do. With UL packs alone often weighing over half a pound, I wondered what your thoughts would be on this backpack-free ultralight hiking style. Thank you very much for your reply and keep the great content coming :)

For a quick day hike from out of camp in benign weather/conditions, pants pockets may well suffice especially if its something like the Rail Riders Bushwhacker Weather Pants. One thing that will always go in my pockets tho will be an inReach Mini and my iPhone. But pants and a small day/fanny pack would be ideal. Best, -alan

Great video, thanks. Good information seems like it could replace a light 3 season down puffy. In addition to all the great points you make about it I hope that it will also be easier to clean in comparison to a down jacket.

@@adventure_alan_co i know from another video you are 5' 8", and a svelte 30" waist. I'm 34" waist but same height, wondering what size you choose as it looks like you had a light layer on and it fit you fairly snug. I intend to use this jacket as a top layer and It's always a gamble choosing cottage vendor sizes which is why I ask. Thanks Again!

A bit of extra room to layer is usually a good option. Very little downside. Best -a

Those inner sleeves pulling out when you put it on would drive me nuts.
@shillens1
@shillens1 Год назад
Since they’re a small cottage company, they might consider using an ultralight polyester blend for the sleeve inner so it’s more comfortable and less sticky (doesn’t stick to the skin if you’re sweating; doesn’t pull out the wrists and stays in place when you put on the jacket). Also, use a 7D for interior lining in the back and chest, and use a 10d for the hood interior in case it snags a branch. The new net weight might be very similar to the current 10D/10D outer/interior.

Wish they made this in down with a stuffable pocket built in. That would be amazing
@jimtrouten7529

There were some down prototypes made, but the advantage of not having sewn-through baffles was gone, and it ended up being too much like other competitors' jackets.
@maximusjoseppi5904
@maximusjoseppi5904 2 года назад
@@jimtrouten7529 as if their quilts aren't the exact same as every competitor? And everything every other company makes haha... And actually, it wouldn't be like any other competitor on the market cause almost no one makes custom down jackets. I only found one very little known person. They'd be the only custom down jacket available by a company with a reputation and good website. Sewn through baffles is highly over spoken, it doesn't really matter on your 5th layer.
@jimtrouten7529
@jimtrouten7529 2 года назад
@@maximusjoseppi5904 You mean, our competitor's quilts are exactly like ours? Don't forget who the OG is! Because I think EE was a bit of a trend-setter in the quilt world. That was before I got here though. All I can tell you is that the down prototypes were not different enough for management to feel good about it. EE has the capability to make anything, but unless it fits within the design philosophy, they (we) won't bring it to market.

When you say you leave your mid layer at home with this jacket. What exactly would that mid layer be. Also I know you like the Patagonia R1 Techface hoody, are they interchangeable or would you use it in conjunction? Thanks

Hi Alan, I am getting ready to order the Torrid. Jacket vs Pullover. I really like the ability to fully unzip a jacket to allow for ventilation. Do the benefits of the pullover outweigh the extra ventilation that comes from being fully unzipped? Just checking - the Jacket does have insulated pockets. Right?
@adventure_alan_co
@adventure_alan_co 3 года назад
I think the advantages of the Pullover exceed its downsides. And it's an insulation piece that I am using for when I am cold, so ventilation is not as high a priority as it would for an active layer like a fleece top or rain jacket. Best, -alan

Hey Alan, how do you find the size guide on EE clothing? I took all my measurements and it says I'm a Small, although all my normal/hiking clothes are either large or sometimes medium. Someone in the reviews said they ordered a small and they were 4" shorter and 35 lbs lighter. Don't want to get something shipped to Australia to find it too small and not able to return

When you say you could leave your fleece at home, are you saying this jacket is suitable to wear while walking with a pack on?
@SpaceTravel1776
@SpaceTravel1776 3 года назад
The jacket weighs 8 ounces, they use extra thin fabric to get that weight. No, don’t wear this jacket or any “ultralight” jacket while doing an activity that causes abrasion.

For longer term wear under a pack order it custom and get the heavier more durable fabric. For intermittent use the lighter fabrics are fine.
