I wrote a comment, then finished watching the video. Came back and my comment disappeared. Lol. Oh well. I was just saying how cool it was that you got to be there to pass on your knowledge to a new digger. I think you brought some luck along with you, by the look of all those jugs and hutches. My goodness, they were one on top of the other trying to show off. Lol. This was just way to much fun. Thanks for taking us along with you.

Once dug a huge cistern that was filled with nothing but rocks and bottles-no dirt.It was amazing how many bottles were whole/Undamaged.The prize in that one was a Old Phoenix Bourbon, SF by Naber, Alfs & Brune Pumpkinseed

Re: smelly stuff. My dad, ( born in 2926), claimed that he and Uncle Joe would place a chunk of Limberger cheese inside the muffler of an opponent's car, so that when it heated up...well, you can imagine. This was a fun dig. Thanks for sharing it!

25 ft x 8 feet width would then make 50 sh****r holes back-to-back and side-by-side that could have only been a military base latrine, Civil War military latrine, or (as said) Pennsylvania huge coal mining latrine. Lotta sh*** to dig through - someone was eating and dumping at a fantastic rate needing so many holes !!!

P J Ritter Company (ketchup) started 1854 in Bridgeton NJ. Later there is the P J Ritter Company of Philadelpha PA (ketchup), operating up into the 1920s and beyond with P J Ritter still in business (!).

Digger Dave, Wow Dave that sure was a huge privy. I've never seen one so large. And I've never heard of a community privy. But I sure enjoyed seeing all those Hutchinson coming out. And all the jugs were different from each other, I was glad that Shane dug up a stenciled one. How many hutches did you dig out? Do you get to keep the bottles that you dig out or how does that work out? What was the total amount of dug bottles? Enjoy the video. Take care ✌

With all those whiskey jugs - you wonder who was having their hutch whiskey/soda water or whiskey/mineral water drinks (!).

So with Hostetter Bitters created in 1853 and Hutchinson bottle stoppers in 1879, and a few food bottles (mining camp mess hall using raw and tin canned foods vs glassware food items of 1870s-1880s----), this coal mine must have had a very large contingent of miners ... 3 shifts of 50 miners = 150 and 50 holes for the miners after eating a good mining camp meal.

So...we venture into cess pit adventures? Uninvited and quite off-topic I wish to share my family experience regarding cess pit archeology: Whilst bulldozing our summer home's landscape our Father accidently broke the lid of our family's septic tank. The sight of that now silenced and nearly vertical John Deere sinking into our yard was a staggering memory. But...for us two teenage brothers...our unavoidable glance into the pits of sudden sewage exposure revealed copious used but floating and bloated adult items on the septic tank's foul surface. My brother and I shot each other the visual gasp of the desperate! There were only the four of us using our bathrooms. These adult products were certainly not of our innocent provence 😕. All blush-boiling embarassment aside -- our Pop had me lie down by the exposed septic tank with our hose and siphon [YES! siphon] the pit's disgusting contents downhill over our neighbours' back lawns. It was Winter...they were absent.
