When I was a little kid, my Mom was driving me and my brothers home from church when my Dad was out of town. Our car broke down on the freeway. It was FREEZING cold outside. No one stopped to help us until FINALLY a black man pulled over and allowed us to sit in his warm car while he fixed our flat tire. His wife and kids were so sweet to us, and treated us like family. That was my first encounter with black people. I have carried that vivid memory of kindness with me for my entire life. That one act of kindness made it super easy for me to enjoy the friendship of MANY black friends who have created music with me for years. I've never told any of my friends that story, or even put much thought about how it impacted my relations with others, but I now realize that TRUE acts of kindness towards other people, no matter what color, is the most effective way to create peace and unity.

I moved to a black community 3 years ago, right about the time BLM started up. Im 45 years old, and I really thought that if I experienced racism, it might come from the older generation. But its the complete opposite. Everytime I went to check the mail, a few 20- somethings started up the BLM "Don't shoot! I can't breathe." 😢 Then comes the little babies, reciting it back. It breaks my heart.

My parents are legal immigrants from Haiti. My dad started with nothing and became a registered nurse supervisor and my mom’s a manager. They made it very clear to me that my books come first. They put the fear of God in me. I couldn’t stand that they were so strict to me growing up. Fast forward 20 years I have no out of wedlock kids, I have a job, graduated high school, no jail record, 3.8 gpa, and well on my way to nursing school. I will continue to be on track in Jesus name. It all starts at the home.

As a half black half Dominican teen I’ve experienced racism before. Blacks and whites have called me a spic before, I’ve been called the n word (won’t say the word but the hard r), ive even been called a spear chucker, white couples cross the street when I’m behind and I hear them whisper fucking black people, but I’m not prejudice, why would I hold hate for an entire race when it’s only the bad apples that give problems? Spoiler alert, I’m not black. But I grew up in South Carolina. My high school was 80% black, I joke that my nickname was “Hey Little White Girl” lol. I’ve been the only white girl at a number of house parties before is all I’m saying. The black community and black culture was the backdrop of my entire upbringing and adolescence, so the issues that black Americans have been facing have been an emotional concern for me as well; I have always wanted my black friends and their families to succeed, as I have actually seen and been a part of the systematic process of keeping black South Carolinians down and struggling, such as in giving our side of town an abysmal level of education and school resources as opposed to the more white schools in downtown Columbia. Race issues have always been there, and we COULD have an authentic conversation about it, and we COULD fix the inner cities, and we COULD fight for policies that seek to help and lift UP the black community all around America, but no, they’re rioting, they’re looting, they’re “activists.” Actively doing nothing I might add. I might be just a white girl, but I understand that a strong black community equals a Strong America.

I think people don’t realize how much us normal average people endure. I’ve been raped by cops in Hawaii after jumping out of the back of a truck from people who were kidnapping me. Targeted for being white and then thinking I had money. Little did they know I was in recovery from addiction and human trafficking. Everyone has problems and everyone endures different levels of pain and suffering in their lives. We should be working together to stop the violence. First state to legalize slavery was Massachusetts. The north still had slaves. Not enough people know their history during that time and want to divide it into “republican/Democrat” or “north/south”. Slavery was in every country in every place - it didn’t belong to a political party

Omgosh, I'm shook... very informative. I firmly believe one of the ways we can move forward is to stop using the term "African American", which imo, does more to separate people than unite us. After many generations, most families do not continue to say they're European American, Mexican American, Japanese American, etc. (btw, I have all in my family, including black; and my father was a Chicago Police Officer, Ret., but I don't hold it against him, lol.). The term denotes nationality not ethnicity or color, and only pertains to first generation immigrants. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe "American" was added because it was meant to be inclusive of immigrants that have now assimilated and have become "American". Additionally, you're absolutely spot on that everybody's experience is different. There are many black families that never experienced slavery, and there are actually many white families that have. My heritage is predominantly Irish, and there was a time when there was a white entrance and a black entrance, but Irish need not apply. They were considered less than because they were indentured servants or contract laborers. I certainly do not condone how some people of color have been treated, but want to bring to light that slavery was and is an unfortunate way of controlling the world... from Asia to Africa to Europe and then to America. If you controlled the people, you controlled the land. The more land you had, the bigger the empire. That's just how it worked. The Mexicans set up missions in the Southwest not only for religious purposes, but to stake a claim on the land they took from Native Indians, who were made their slaves. We've all been hurt at some time or another, and we need to overcome this or we will be our own demise. We need to start treating each other as individuals, stop blaming others for our decisions and stop condemning others for their opinions, even if we disagree. We can't change the past, but we can learn from it and go on.
