I'm always sitting behind the desk looking at drawings. This is such a great view from the other side of the table! I love your explanations in between showing us what it looks like in the field.

I wish knew someone to recommend for that area. If it’s like around here, there should be some companies that only do solar. If you have a smaller installation like a house, some companies around here do just one inverter down low by the meter. This could be beneficial because it would be difficult to get back on the roof the change out an individual panel inverter. Down side is, it’s slightly not as efficient if one panel gets shaded. Hope you find a good installer!

In a residential grid tied system where the main breaker is next to the solar pv ac disconnect on the outside, does the solar pv ac disconnect connect to the in of the inverter from the main service panel or after the inverter out goes to the critical load and transfer switch then to the solar pv ac disconnect? or does the out go to the solar pv ac disconnect first then to the critical load panel? I am a newbie so please bear with my newbie questions. Thanks

I’m happy to help with some newbie questions! Let’s see if we can figure this out. In a gird tie system, there is not a transfer switch. The Solar AC Disconnect is there to kill the power going to, and coming from the inverters attached to solar panels. Remember, the grid tie inverters only send out power when they have a reference from the “grid” to match up with. When you disconnect the Solar AC Disconnect, it kills that reference, and they don’t output anything. There are not any critical loads with these kinds of systems, and that is usually in generator systems. Now this conversation slightly changes if you are referring to a Central Grid Tie Inverter that you see on the side of peoples houses. With those, there is another DC disconnect in between the panels and inverter, and that’s to disconnect the constant DC feed coming from the roof. See if this clarifies part of your question, and by all means, keep asking them, especially if I missed what you were asking. I could even make a video on this later on if it seems to be a question that most people have:)
