Left mine in the containers and placed them in the conservatory over winter. I cut the leaves back to about 30cms, Put them outside after the frost was over and they've all come back, even the one that looked very sad. They are unbelievably tough.

Hi Colin, that is good to know that these are quite tough plants. I had one in my neighbourhood, left out all winter (in ground) and it survived but it did die the next winter (both times unprotected).

Be careful with loft temperature and also it helps to give it a dusting of green sulphur powder to help prevent rot

Hi, thank you for your comment. As its not huge one, I will keep it inside my house in a dark cupboard somewhere. Yes, I do have green sulphur. I only dug it up early to shoot the video so I have to baby sit for longer 😂

I dug ours up a week ago from the garden, washed most of the soil off, cut all the leaves off except the topmost one. Then potted it up into soilless compost in the conservatory. The temperature gets down to 7 degrees but it has survived each winter for the past three years using this method.
@urbantropicaluk
@urbantropicaluk 2 года назад
It's so cool to hear when the plant survives. 7 degree is quite good temperature. I have checked loft and loft is warmer than my shed at the moment so I will be moving it to shed and around xmas time into loft. I really hope that it survives this year😊. Thank you for sharing your tip.

7 Celsius? I assume you’re British or Canadian.

@@mckatelynchristensen That’s quite correct, the Ventricosum murelli seems quite happy at that temperature.

I just dug mine up today and they are currently upside down to get the water out in the garage. Then they will be dry stored in the house. People should also remember when dry storing in their loft. There are cold and warmth lofts/roofs, usually depending on the age of the building.
@urbantropicaluk

Hi David, thank you for your comment. Have you dry store it before in the house. I will be doing it for the first time!

Good thing you did not cut it all the way back to ground level that way it will be taller as it will put out leaves at top of stalk

Last year I put a fleece over one of mine in London and left it, some straw around to insulate it. It did well The other one in the shed with straw in a box and a didn't survive

@@urbantropicaluk I put some some canes around, approx 30 cm from the plant and then put straw in the gap, I think it's the roots that need protection. This year I'll dig it out

@@rizmirza1829 thanks for the tip. Do you cut the leaves? I am planning to leave it out but not sure yet I might be sure by Dec/Jan
@rizmirza1829
@rizmirza1829 2 года назад
@@urbantropicaluk Yep, definitely cut the leaves as it contains so much water which will freeze. I'm not brave enough to try it again with the Ensette as one died, but I'll do it with the Musa bajo

If you cut it back harder won't there be less to rot while in storage and it will dry out quicker leaving less moisture in the remaining plant. Nice video.
@urbantropicaluk
@urbantropicaluk 2 года назад
Hi, I haven't been successful with this but I think if we cut it quite small then you lose height for the next year (but it does grow fast) and I have heard that smaller plant survival chance is low. But again let's have fingers crossed. Do you cut yours quite short and then store it? Are you in mild or very cold area?
@TropicalJungleIreland

@@urbantropicaluk Hiya. This will be my first winter and storage for my ensete banana's, so I'm very interested not just this video but for Colocasia and my indoor Alocasia collection. Fingers crossed for keeping them alive. My ensetes grew huge in their own pots this year, their 1st, planning on dividing them each into 2 so I'll have 4 growing hopefully next year. I don't have any rooms at 5deg, the house will be too warm so I reckon I'll be putting them into the shed but I'll put a thermometer in to check and if the temperature drops I'll bring them in. I'm in the south east of Ireland and the weather pretty much the same as the southern part of the UK. Looking forward to your next video 😊

@@TropicalJungleIreland Hi, I am going to store my colocasia as well but currently too soon for me (trying to avoid longer storage period) . Usually ensete does well til late November where I live. If you are using shed, may be use sand to put the corn bit in it can absorb moisture. I don't have a decent shed so really thinking loft (house is quite warm 22 degree Celsius) but also I might go away in peak winter next year then I will have to do something as loft will have lower temperatures. I feel confident this year but let's exchange outcomes as it goes and I am learning so much! Thank you for your comments, its valuable information 👍

Bought one off the Internet quite small. The first year I kept in the conservatory. It was big. It seemed to get some aphids but put it out in May.( Cornwall). T grewer bigger. Last Winter put in the garage in the pot but maybe cut it down too much maybe. This year no life. Just ordered another small one.😊
