Okay, definitely subscribing. I have an ESQ-1, and while it’s a delight to play, programming is another story. I’m still trying to figure it all out.

Tutorial videos on the Ensoniq gear are very rare so thank you very much for this one. I wish I could find tutorial on the EPS, synth functions etc... I had an ESQ-1 and sold it years way back to buy the EPS.

Just the type of info we needed, there’s not many other video explaining the ESQ settings in depth, if any. When using the ‘hidden’ waves , alot of them sound different depending on which key is pressed which is weird to work with. Inspired me to have a session on my ESQ-1 ...it’s always a blast exploring and making patches on this synth and would welcome more videos on the sound design/patch making in depth. Fun synth but I could do with getting to know the functionality more.

Glad it was of use. One of the things I forgot to mention was the multi-sample waveforms for things like piano, bass etc, so maybe the hidden waves are that format. Yeah, maybe a more sound design focussed episode would be good. Try to get "blade runner" sounds out of it or something :-)

@Johnsormani 3 года назад
The majority of the hidden waves were no multi samples for the whole keyboard range. That’s the reason for this. Btw you can also use the hidden waves, even if you don’t have that specific firmware. You do need a sq80 sound cartridge for this and can only edit the sounds one way. ( down I think)

Only 4 lfo waveforms! Most synths in that era had one or max 2 lfo waveforms. Just to put it into perspective

Yeah, 4 is fine.

You can prove the filter is not stepping by applying a slow triangle LFO as a mod source and listening to the result. You could possibly force stepping by modulating with something like a midi slider (and the EXT-CTRL mod source) and automating it. I have never tried this. Hit RECORD & COMPARE buttons simultaneously to check your upper and lowwer modwheel values to see if that's your problem.
@RunningonairMusic
@RunningonairMusic 3 года назад
Thanks, good tip. I'll try that.

You could use an arpeggiator like keystep and / or a midi to cv interface to mangle the filter

I find that I get that stepping effect on oscillator frequency as well with very wide and very slow sweeps. The digital modulators, including the digitaly processed wheel, have a definite limit to their resolution.

I've got an ESQ-1 as well and love it but haven't created my own sounds yet but these videos you've made are very inspiring so I'm going to start! Thank you! :)

Love your vid's ROA! Got the classic ESQ-M rack (looks to be super rare actually?, format certainly suits my now crammed studio! Filters on this baby are a amazing. Such as same that Ensoniq went under 😥 , one of my fav synth Co.'s back in the day (have the TS-10 of course, with it's also rare Poly AT keybed too 😁 ). Some great products came out of the Co.'s the bright staff went on to join though. Keep up these relevant to me instructional vids please!! Sub'd of course 😎🎹🎶👍🍻

Thanks for the support, much appreciated. Would love try out the TS10. I'm hoping to get more Ensoniq as time goes on but I guess it depends how expensive it all gets. I'll be looking at a lot of Yamaha for while, so I hope that remains interesting.

"...when I thought it was a great idea just to go software." Spoken with a fairly impressive amount of hardware synths in the background. Looks like you reconsidered. 🙂 One thing I'm wondering is in how far the ESQ-1/SQ-80/ESQ-M differ from the SQ-1/SQ-2/SW-R. The latter seems marginally easier to obtain, although they still don't exactly grow on trees.
@RunningonairMusic

Very different beasts, check my sq1 videos. Thanks for the comment.

@@RunningonairMusic Yes, I'm going through your videos. Between the EX-8000, K4M, ESQ-M and SQ-R (or any combination thereof) it's not always easy to choose what would be a good addition to my mostly 1990s rack. Although that also has to do with the fact that asking prices tend to be... optimistic.

Which model sustain pedal are you using?
@RunningonairMusic

Nothing special just a cheap eBay plastic thing. Best to get one with a polarity switch.

@@RunningonairMusic nice. Yea i have an old ensoniq fsw1 that i sorta fixed up but still i find that style to be flimsy, but other piano style pedals ive tried dont work with the ESQ1 for the most part
