Thank you for this series! I got an ESQ-1 because people online told me it would be a great beginner synth for learning about synthesis. I ended up way overwhelmed by all the parameters, so I got a Reface CS and learned on that instead. I think I'm finally ready for this one.
Yeah, there's a lot to work with on the esq. If you want to work through the basics, id suggest possibly looking at a mono synth. Something like a micro or minibrute. What you see on the panel is what is happening. It's easy to miss what is actually going on in more complex synths.
Tutorial videos on the Ensoniq gear are very rare so thank you very much for this one. I wish I could find tutorial on the EPS, synth functions etc... I had an ESQ-1 and sold it years way back to buy the EPS.
Thanks, glad it helped. Ensoniq gear is getting so expensive, i doubt i'll get to cover any of the other units. I do have an sqr, which I'll look at at some point.
@@RunningonairMusic That's actually how you simulate PWM on it. Check out Kirk Slinkard's 2nd SQ80 video (applies to the ESQ1 as well). I was the one who asked the question that inspired that video. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-7dEzF7QSgQE.html
Pretty sure you’re correct regarding AM modulation. To do what you’re talking about, you’d need osc1 -> dca1 -> dca2. I think this is a limitation of the DOC chip itself
On NOISE2, modulate its pitch with an LFO at maximum frequency and maximum amplitude and you get prefect white noise. Based on the owner's manual I believe this was the intended use for that particular waveform. Doesn't work with NOISE 1 & 3.
@@RunningonairMusic I think it's a hardware limitation... It's like when you turn on AM the output of one oscillator goes directly to the cv input of the destination's VCA and that replace the digital mod input from env. But hey, if you think about it most synths don't have a VCA for each oscillator in the first place, so I don't complain too much. 😉
When I select OSC 1 and try to cycle through different wave forms the sound doesn't change very much, or rather is just stays as whatever sound was selected from the internal bank before pressing OSC 1. In the manual it says to select a program labelled BASIC in the internal storage before selecting the OSC but I don't seem to have that option. Any idea why this might be or how I can fix it? Thank you so much for making these videos they are amazing!!
It's quite possible that the memories have been overwritten so that could be an issue. Is the oscillator actually on? You might be listening to the others, or a mixture of all three.
@@RunningonairMusic If the memories were over written is there a way to restore the synth to it's default settings that might help fix the issue? I believe the oscillator is on, but i'm pretty new to synths - when I select OSC 1 it goes into the OSC 1 settings on the dash board. How do i know if it's actually on or if i'm hearing a mixture? When I cycle through wave forms in OSC 1 the sound changes slightly depending on which internal sound was selected before I pressed the OSC 1 button but the change is so slight that I feel something isn't working correctly and with others it doesn't change at all. Thanks for replying to my question I really apprecate it!!
You need to enable disable oscillators at the DCA. I think the best approach is to work through the manual step by step. Also if you are new to synths try looking at a few RU-vid introduction videos. I can't really help you from a distance.
Is this good for someone with low experience of synths and programming, or would you advise to get something else instead? In other words, is it best reserved for more experienced synth users?
it´s the most deterministic piece of image I ever seen in my life... the spectrogram exists before you play the notes and the cursor just reach it in perfect time...I think this will be a headache for quantum physics
lol, yeah back when the synth came out, this would have seemed pretty amazing, but now you can get a flux capacitor on e-bay for $10, so no problem at all!
