Ensuring water for my New Olive Tree Grove | Swales on Contour | Permaculture Farm

Building swale to support a new olive tree grove. It's important to plan for success when planting in a new area. In today's video I discuss the thinking behind and also show the building of swales along the side of a gully where I am planting young olive trees. The olive trees need the hottest spot on the property which is also potentially the driest. By building these swales means that these plants will get as much moisture as possible with little effort - it's all in the design.

I helped my Dad collect his olives with a 4 square net only sown on 3 sides so it would create a collar around the trunk and swat the branches sideways with very long eucalyptus poles... Then fold net in half and drag it to the next tree... he has over 100 trees and I hated every second of it. This was on a flat land. All the best and more power to you.

Wow incredible info. 🤩I forgot all about the A frame to do contours,we've been winging it but I'm pleased to say that its working. We focused so far on moving water to stop it washing soil off our property and to stop it flooding our laundry. Next up we're making sure we keep all that precious water on our place. Then we'll plant out with natives and edibles. Its such a long process to watch and see how water moves on a property but its paying off now slowly. I am studying "the earth users guide to permaculture " when I can and it uses a plumb bob , I really like the spirit level. Ill see what timber we have and make one like yours. It's great to see someone doing it by hand instead of hiring those monstrous polluting excavators to dig swales. The hiring are usually done by young fit men too. If you can grow vetiver bushes along the swales, the root system will form a natural wall, strengthening the swales and forcing the water to sink deeper into the table while at the time increasing the amount of water the swales will contain naturally when it is raining. A bit lower you can grow your olive. You have to water it until the roots can go deep.
@huttonsvalleypermaculture
@huttonsvalleypermaculture Год назад
Thank you - I will definitely look into vetiver and if I can get it here!! It's kind of fun to do things by hand. Checking out you mini-swaling (that's the verb, yeah? To swale = to build swales!?!😂) your olive grove, because I decided, my garden needs a mini-swale or two or three 😊. Question. Do you plan to move your new fence? It looks like it (and all the older fences...) will get very much in the way while caring for and harvesting from the trees. The hillside also looks very steep - that could get interesting while harvesting. 😵‍💫
@huttonsvalleypermaculture

Mini- sealing yes haha!! It’s too hard to get fencing guys out to do small jobs so I think fences are staying g as is! Harvesting/ yes thought about that and agree with you that it will be challenging. If I can’t harvest half of them we’ll so be it - they’ll still look good there 😆

Thank you any suggestions for setting up a food forest for a dry climate? My other problem is chemical farming is surrounding me. The Mulberry tree is the only tree I can keep growing they don’t kill. for my canopy. Any other type of tree suggestions would be appreciated. Just lovely :-)
@huttonsvalleypermaculture
@huttonsvalleypermaculture Год назад
Hi there - thanks so much for watching. The nitrogen fixing tree is called a tagasaste tree or tree lucerne. Not sure if it's available where you are. Hopefully the chemicals don't fly into your property or alternatively, wash in with rain events!? Not sure your scale but maybe you should check out Geoff Lawton's greening the desert project in Jordan - Discover Permaculture with Geoff Lawton. He has turned a small very dry property into an oasis with permaculture design. Sounds like you need to build some soil and perhaps put in some nurse trees to help protect younger productive trees. I'm doing a bit of that here but he does it in a very dry landscape. It's also hot so the tree selection may not suit you. But what he does do well is discuss the strategies used for water harvesting and water retention that has made a huge difference to the property in Jordan. It's a bit hard to make suggestions with out knowing temp range etc but you might be able to use some of his ideas to get things going a bit better at your place, then the tree selection may be easier. Well done with the mulberry - I'm struggling to get mine going here!!

is there a follow up video on these things? did they work out? those swales are so thin its had to believe that such small interventions can make a big difference, seems like they'd need a lot of maintanance for not much benefit, especially for olive trees, i'd love to see the results.
@huttonsvalleypermaculture
@huttonsvalleypermaculture 8 месяцев назад
Hi James - I put them in to ensure the trees established well and were able to cope with their first dry summer. The trees are doing great - it’s been a couple of years now. The lower swale doesn’t work any longer as the spring has now moved lower down that little gully. A lot of work putting these swales in , you’re right, but I just wanted to ensure the trees survived and I wouldn’t have to do them again. Now that they are growing I’m not worrying about them and as you say they are olive trees which are pretty hardy in dry times. I’ve show the trees in one video but didn’t show the swales - will have to do follow up! Thanks for watching and your comment!

Hi there. I probably didn't make it clear enough in the video but the little spring flows very intermittently - only after heavy rains. My plan was to irrigate the hillside at these times to help establish the trees and hydrate the very dry slope a bit. I'm actually going to almost stop that spring now to increase the flow of water to my dam rather than that gully. We are in summer now and each of those trees ( except the one a cow ate down ) are growing really well - certainly not overwatered. Thanks for the query!!

I think making your beds on contour is a good idea. It would be good to do no dig style garden beds and lay lots of organic material, compost & mulches, on top. It may take a little while for the soil structure to improve but by feeding the soil you will get an increase in soil microbiology which will change the soil structure and allow water to move through it more readily. If you haven't seen my video on the soil food web check that out and of course all the work of Elaine Ingham. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-iiAcmdoPft0.html

Yes, NOW the mediterranean area is hot and dry. But it was not always. It only got WAY more dry after all the "great" empires around the med deforested most of the land in favour for grain aggriculture.
