I play a lot of roguelikes. Roguelikes are fun. The burning question is, which one is the bestest most creativest funnest game loop? It's Enter the Gungeon.
Good video but I'm actually surprised with the hot take that the music is bad. I think the music is absolutely phenomenal and how hectic the music is perfectly captures the insane gunfights. Especially how unique the music just sounds, I couldn't imagine gungeon without this sound track. But absolutely underrated content keep it up.
The enter the gungeon song is kind of lame tbh. The rest of the music doesn't make much sense. Listen to music in other roguelikes (risk of rain 2, loop hero, vampire survivors) and there's no argument.
Right!? I have 2 videos talking about Enter the Gungeon's greatness and was going to do a third which would have the synergies in it, but I got lost trying to be relevant and timely with vids. Some of those synergies are BONKERS
I recently played Isaac for the first time and I must say it was alot less enjoyable than ETG (for me) It requires more skill, has more reward for doing well, way cooler bosses and enemies, has more of an objective to work towards, has better gameplay etc.
Naah Dude video 10/10, it deserves way more views, The editing, Jokes, and explanation, all is a 10 out of 10 Now, I only need to get better at the game, as far as i can go is like Floor 3 🐔
Anyone who thinks the music is bad needs to listen to each song again, they all represent their area perfectly and keep the atmosphere intense and hectic, which really adds to the game’s feel and excitement. With any other “normal” music, the game would lose so much of its vibe and personality.
The issue isn't that I need to listen to the songs again... it's that I've listened to them for like 200 plus hours. Normal music is kind of an interesting statement. I would argue that it would INCREASE it's personality if you had music that fit better. Good example is when you run into Link in the gungeon. His theme... is straight up goober buns rubbish bin farts that have been left out in the sun for 14 weeks. But when you fight the glitched lich!? That is a straight up banger. Doseone only has one mode and no in between. He writes rap beats and his utterly hogwash at anything else, and personally I think the game would have been served better if he had just gone all in and actually rapped on all the tracks. Because his rap beats without the rap itself, are just husks on a desperate quest for glory. Also I think it's totally fine to think the music is good. I'm just highly unreasonable with my strong opinions. LOOOOOOOOL.
@@benfrediscool I get this point of view and to be honest the rapping songs ARE some of the best ones in the game, but maybe the style is just a very divisive music style. Personally when I hear the song in the Link room it feels mysterious and has a really cool vibe but I can get why someone would prefer it to be different or more melodic. It just comes down to taste, as I really enjoy the different rhythms and variations in each theme, while other people may just see it as random or repetitive.
The Rat level and the dragun themes are amazing. Also face melter song and the ending rap are both great but yeah i agree that the rest of the soundtrack is nothing to write home about
Face melter song?! Excellent. Unicorn Horn song!? Amazing. I'll have to revisit the rat level theme. Grinding the Rat Punch Out minigame gave me PTSD so I don't remember the theme.

@@benfrediscool also there is a mod on the thunderstore called punchout anywhere or smthn like that. You just download it and then type in the console playpunchout anytime and anywhere and you can practice an infinite number of times that way till you get good and actually go to the rat's level and beat his ass. Just a small tip if you're still interested in facin' em ol' demons
That is a convincing argument towards it being the best roguelike. XD I also agree that the take on the music is a little TOO hot. After over 300 hours of hearing it I likely was biased against it.
Enter the gungeon is surely one of the best roguelikes ever made but i prefer the better combat system over anything else, So nothing beats dead cells for me

The one about the music? Definitely not sarcasm. Maybe invalid or uncalled for, but not sarcasm. I turned off the in game music faster than an alligator eating a kangaroo baby. But that rap song that plays when you fight the glitched lich at the end of the paradox run. Now that is some musical gold right there.
Damn, I really thought that take on the music was a bit. For me, it was certainly a major factor in falling in love with the game, although it would've been quite hard not to like a game that combines dungeons and guns. The tracks are immaculate in how they match the theme, and the way it dynamically shifts in and out as you enter/leave combat is just excellent. The ambient part is nice and cozy for exploring and looting, while the main track gets you pumped up. Plus the composition is so unique, with the synthy 8-bit sounds merged with the fantasy dungeon-esq vocals in the background. Absolutely wild take.
I don't know about "immaculate." But I do think I was a bit harsh. You want to hear immaculate, look up Ouji Saint by Ratvader and listen to the Cello melody at 6 minutes 50 seconds. That's the soundtrack for Ultros. That is what I would call immaculate. I would have loved something closer to Bastion's soundtrack or even Rogue Legacy 2. EtG is still my favorite roguelike by a huge margin, I just could not get behind the soundtrack. EXCEPT THAT INTRO TRACK SO GOOD. Then the glitched lich fight track!? Holy Moses, that is some spice right there.
@@benfrediscool You mostly differed to Finn when judging the snippets of each track, so I'm not really sure what your critiques of it are. In my mind, they are immaculate in the sense that they match the tone, setting, and theme of the game flawlessly. They blance aspects of a retro game OST with attributes of a more gritty dungeon crawler exceptionally well. That isn't to say they are the greatest works in gaming, or even among roguelikes, but that it achieved the goal of a video game OST with a perfect score. But at least we can agree the intro is the GOAT. As for Ouji Saint, it's not really my kind of track, but perhaps in the context of the game it could be; but I've never played it.

It is surprising me how much people took exception to my take on the music. I still legitimately think it's the worst music of any roguelight that I enjoy, but I also would have come at it less aggressively in hindsight.
@@liammitchell1310 That first level song tho!? That thing is a banger. But definitely not a super high tier OST, unlike Into the Breach and Hades. Those freaking things are impeccable. I'm realizing that it's primarily the lack of melody that bothers me in EtG's soundtrack.
I remember playing Metal Gear Solid 5 on my laptop, blown away by my laptop's capabilities. I set the settings rly low and got a solid 60, so I just slowly cranked them up, and my eyebrows cranked up higher each time. Solid 60 at 1080p max settings. Was not expecting that Couple months later I try out Enter the Gungeon during a free weekend, same hardware. I love pixel art and 2D games a lot. I knew something felt off when I was playing it. I looked up at the frame rate counter, and I was dipping down to 47fps. I returned to the main hub to AFK, nothing happening on screen, proceeds to randomly drop down to the 40s. So I uninstalled I don't like nor tolerate games, ESPECIALLY WHEN THEY'RE 2D PIXEL GAMES, that run worse than my AAA open world games or FAR more graphically demanding 3D games. Enter the Gungeon is the first and only 2D game I've seen lag. Not even Terraria with a bunch of sparklers lags as bad as Enter the Gungeon in the hub with NOTHING happening. Ah, PC gaming

To me and I'm not very good at roguelikes or bullet hell, EtG is magical. Every ounce of it drips or references, tons of interesting characters, mesmerizing opening song, it feels overwhelming on how content stuffed the game is. It gives me a real sense of awe.
In my country the pathetic liars/"journalists" of SVT/SR (our state media television and radio) like to call "private journalists", ie people who just hit the streets to report on stuff, "Swish-whores" (Swish being a payment option in the nordic countries). The irony of state funded media shill liars using that language to refer to people who are getting funded by others voluntarily AFTER their taxation...
AAAHHH!!! I've had this game for a while but haven't gotten around to it yet as other games have gotten in the way... The CEREBRAL BORE!!!??? I remember that one being the shit when playing Turok 2 as a kid. Sending one on those green, clawed dinosaurs... That's one homage I wasn't expecting to see but very nice; instant childhood flashbacks and am now more hyped about this game.👍 Edit: Earthworm Jim (2) as well. As a big retro gamer/collector a few newer game references I wouldn't have gotten (Mass Effect and Dead Space; I should get around to play Dead Space 1 and 2) but that and Turok I knew despite possibly being on the more obscure side for younger gamers (?). Edit 2: where's the remix that plays when you go over the guns from btw? I know it's Sheik's theme but idk the remix (very soothing)? Edit 3: Alan Garcia remix (sounds very similar but can't tell with voice on top)? Edit 4: secret jutsu hand technique... OK I'm enjoying this video enough to sub as well.🤞🤚🤙🖖👌
Ha ha! Cerebral Bore was insane! My brothers and I would play the multiplayer mode where whoever can stay alive as the monkey longest wins and it would just crack us up as we tried to escape the Cerebral Bore as the monkey. Enter the Gungeon has SO many references it's wild. They even have gun that's a reference to how convoluted DnD Second Edition's AC system was, called... well... AC-15. The bat you get is a reference to Earthbound, the Abyssal Tentacle is stylized exactly after Day of the Tentacle. The d-pad weapon if you do the inputs for Hadouken or Scorpion's "get over here" they actually come out as either a hadouken or a grapple. This game is so good. The song is Sheik's Groove by Alan Garcia or AlanGee15. You can find it as a free download over at OcRemix.org where Alan submitted it. Absolutely a great remix.

RoR2 was made as a 3d game, while the first was a 2d game. As for a dev reason for why, I recall them saying something along the lines of "Well, no one else has made a 3d rougelike, why don't we?" hope that answers your question

EtG is a good game but I don’t think it’s *that* good of a roguelike. It’s just not random enough to keep you interested past 100% completion. There’s a definite point where you have seen everything there is to see
That is fair. Dang it took me so many tries to beat the Metal Gear Solid Punch Out Rat fight though. That kept me coming back for a donkulous amount of time.
Enter the gungeon is a good game, but definitely not the best. In the amount of content, it loses a lot to Noita, for example. Also a lot of guns are made with ctrl+c with minor changes in stats. So not everything is as perfect as it might seem.

I do agree I think it’s really good but I can’t put it above binding of Isaac, it’s too much of an og that influenced all of these. Besides I do want to know how the multiplayer for that game will be. it’s coming, at some point, it’s coming.
Absolutely real. Binding of Issac paved the path. Personally the aesthetic is a bit creepy for my taste... which is funny because Dead Space is one of my favorite games... but Biding of Isaac cannot be overstated for it's influence. Awesome game.

I dont find the music bad. Just not appropriate to whats going on. Its more fitting for a montage or trailer rather than the actual background music of the game
Yeah it's really not as bad as I express in the video... but that lack of melody just wounds my soul. Hades? Goated soundtrack. ScourgeBringer? METAL MAYHEM that happens to be goated. Into the Breach? A sound track made entirely of goats. I think every other good roguelike has a better soundtrack in my opinion, so while EtG's really isn't THAT bad, it's just a bummer that my most favoritest roguelike of all time has my least favorite music.
True, that this game has some content and replayability. But Isaac has THE CONTENT. And THE REPLAYABILITY. And also THE RESOURSE MANAGEMENT, THE DECISION MAKING, THE ALTERNATE PATHS. And don't forget THE MODS. They also matter.
I was always a little reticent to try Issac but I had a friend who introduced it to me and the alternate path stuff was kind of blowing my mind. That game is definitely THE game changer in the Roguelike space in my opinion, but for my money. I love the speed of gungeon and the absolutely wild variability of having 7 guns on hand with wildly different play styles. Both great games for sure.
This was actually my first video even though I posted it later. I was scared to post it and so just held onto it for months and months, but I had no idea what the heck to sound like and did indeed do a wonky vocal affect that was sort of all over the place. I believe I sound less like Trump with my other stuff... or more like Trump? I don't know.
Binding of Issac is definitively in, my opinion, the inception of the modern day roguelike. It's where things started to change and roguelikes really found their legs. I just personally found the aesthetic off putting, but the nuance and decision making and plethora of routes and secret bosses was astounding.
Recently I considered whether I'd prefer enter the gungeon or the binding of isaac. Then I stuck with dead cells, vampire survivors, risk of rain 2 and loop hero instead. I think this came down to the terrible music in both etg and boi.
The continued development put into Dead Cells has constantly impressed me. An awesome game that keeps getting more awesome. Risk of Rain 2 also has had some excellent evolution. Those two are absolutely top of the tier list Roguelikes. AMAZING. I ended up turning music off in EtG and just listen to whatever album I'm interested in as a replacement.
@@justarandomguy983 Main theme is cheesy and lame, the rest of it is reminiscent of that one cursed Resident Evil basement theme. There is no comparison when discussing typical rougelike/lite music, which is usually quite good, and etg's.

Like with the music saying its either good or bad feels like it doesnt do it justice because of how its used yknow, like its thematic to dungeon crawling gameplay. Its nothing stand out but i don't feel like that should make it bad? But like cool video i do love this game
You like rogue games huh? I HIGHLY recommend a free game called Rogue Glitch. It starts off weak, but it gets REALLY good at the end. With that said, yes Enter the Gungeon is the FULL package.

To me the peak of the roguelike genre consists of the trifecta of Enter the Gungeon, Binding of Isaac and Slay the Spire. Nothing even comes close to the sheer breadth of variables that make up BoI, no other roguelike out there is as mechanically thought-out and even balanced as StS and the sheer passion and creativity that oozes out of every single frame in EtG has never been topped. Since those were in your thumbnail - I know many people love Hades, but I personally found that game's combat pretty frantic, random and unsatisfying and its shipper-style writing left my cynical old man heart cold. As for Dead Cells... I can't even really pinpoint why, but that game just never clicked with me. In both cases it's a matter of preference for sure though. Oh also completely disagree on the music, that stuff slaps.
Those are amazing picks for roguelikes. I just picked up Rogue Legacy 2 and am curious to see how it stacks up. I personally could never get that deep into Slay the Spire, because I'm more of an action guy, but I did play like 15 hours of it because I absolutely could see the magic, but I just couldn't access the feeling. Ah but that's where you're wrong! The creators of Enter the Gungeon were big Nuclear Throne fans and one of the shrines in the game is to Y.V. Nuclear Throne was truly a trend setter in the fast paced gun play Roguelike genre. Legendary game.
That is an absolutely beautiful little game called Moonlighter. It's made by a studio from Spain and the charm and character in the animations is incredible. Great music in Moonlighter also. Great game, definitely recommend it.
I was really hoping Flinthook would be my favorite roguelike ever, the absolute shenanigans with the grappling hook intrigued the heck out of me. For whatever reason I just couldn't stick with it and ended up never getting to far into it. Probably a skill issue.
