Ironically, I argue (and most agree when I show evidence) that this was a truly epic movie with the baddest villain since Vader……. This speech is so well done. Whoever let that Sasquatch fart remake these movies needs to choke on it. The new ones suck, this is ninja effing turtles
@@WheelsRCool yeh onkow ramophradfir life said in hjs star trek rsnt tht in hid mind Michal bsy madethe eturtkes like shrek fucked a gonna abd hsd four fucked up kids
Same here. Me and my friends would watch this sometimes and laugh so hard because he gives the most evil speech but finishes it with "these...TURTLES." So funny.
DoDonPachi SaiDaiOuJou you know the comics (which were dark and gritty) came before the cartoon? This film is easily the most faithful to the source material
It's always been a harsh reality. We're no different from our generation or those that came before us or after us. The nobodies are always amongst us and we'll make our mark somewhere or someplace. By any means necessary.
What an awesome line. That's what makes movies memorable....without quotable lines, it won't be come a memorable movie. I cannot even recall any classic lines from any other tmnt movies.
The guy who directed the movie had directed a lot of music videos so he was able to bring that kind of imagery into scenes like this. Knew how to work the angles and lighting.
Igarappappa wow! Learn something new everyday. I never knew that. It’s awesome to know and definitely makes sense given the visual effects talent on display here. 👍🏼👍🏼
No villain has had a better entrance than shredder.. His voice is so menacing.. And they freaking rolled up his sleeves and rolled out a carpet for him like how much more badass can you get!!
The carpet being rolled out was actually supposed to be used as a sparring area where Shredder sits down and fends off all the attacks from the initiates of the foot clan. The deleted scene is on youtube. One of the initiates is on 01:40 in the background holding his arm (obviously from getting beat up by Shredder)
I remember seeing this in the theater. It was my first movie going experience. The kids in the audience were very reactive during the film, but you could have heard a pin drop in this moment. We were legit scared of Shredder.
This version of Shredder is so badass looking. Great costume. Also the original movie had a strong anti-gang message in it which reflected the real problems that many American cities faced at the time that this film was made.
This is why I like this Shredder compared to the new movie's version. The new version was just someone helping a corporation be super rich. I give the new one credit for giving an intimidating Shredder up until he's actually in the Transformers suit. But for this Shredder, I saw this one as being someone who's corrupting the youth, giving them a place to call home and making himself their "father" and in return they learn the art of invisibility and become apart of the Foot Clan and they can steal and do whatever they want.
***** What's to say the kid gang isn't gonna be Shredder's back up plan in the new one? People forget that in the original comics Oroku Saki didn't take the turtles too seriously in a fight until they and Splinter bested them. He saw them as nothing more than freaks and children something he didn't shake off, but he learned from every mistake he made. Hell the 2014 movie is pretty much showing his escalation. He didn't have to do jack shit for a while, because before the turtles arrived, there was no one that could stop the foot. Then he finds out a bunch of vigilanties with martial arts experience bested his men, so he has them set a trap, which is pretty clever for a comic book villain. Then when he finds out what they are like in battle, that's when he uses the armor. The 90s Shredder when he found out the means of the turtles' mutation, he used it to make animals that could best them in combat and then used it on himself out of desperation. They may look different in appearance and tactics, but when it comes to thinking and learning about their enemies, both 90s and 2014 Shredder aren't all that different.
@@ZainR Shredder is the leader of a global crime syndicate. Plus he was also a business man in the 2003 version of the TMNT and that's arguably the greatest version of Shredder ever.
I love the fact he doesn't look in any way 'western'. No kevlar body armour, no cliche superhero/villain trappings. It's purely Eastern influences in the costume.
The Shredder in this film is one of the main things that made this movie so unforgettable. He was not the more clownish and one-liner spouting Shredder of the cartoon. He was a threatening Samurai warrior who ruled the Foot with an iron fist. He was a sadistic killer who murdered-not framed- both Hamato Yoshi and Tang Shen in cold blood. He was a manipulative monster who poisoned the minds of young teenagers who were already ostracized to steal for him, and punished them with violence if they failed. He kidnapped Splinter and hung him helplessly from the wall, torturing him to get information about the turtles. It’s that seriousness that really makes this film great, the humor perfectly balanced with the darker moments. They just don’t make then like this anymore.
Shredder had a hell of a presence in this film, this scene alone was all you needed to get the point that this was the enemy and he wasn't taking any bullshit. As another youtube user put it, no cgi, no explosions, just practical effects and a terrifying presence
agreed. the amazing, atmospheric and intimidating music played a big part in establishing that presence. Without the music, I don't think this scene would have anywhere near as much impact.
Not to mention at the final fight he beat down our heroes and almost killed leo.... thats how you make a movie.. sometimes heroes dont have advantage and need help, which they got from splinter
Incredible scene. Shredder seems more intimidating here than Darth Vader. But at the same time conveys how he is able to corrupt and prey on the lost and disillusioned teenagers to become their father figure. The music goes from ominous to a sort of tragically hopeful
The problem is that most filmmaking went all digital. Digital looks smoother and faker, and so much work on the lighting and overall look is done in post production with people that aren't cinematographers or lighting techs, and films end up with a set number of similar looks. Digital made things easier and cheaper, but sometimes ease breeds laziness and a lack of creativity and innovation.
Shredder, the ultimate villain. Fluent in the hidden arts of Ninjitsu, leader of the Footclan. Shredder would've defeated everyone had it not been for his pride. He did in-fact defeat all four of the Turtles. That's four against one, and he beat them.
@Capri And they didn't really beat him in the second movie he sort of killed himself while trying to take the Turtles down with him. So... Sorry dudes can't take points for that battle give them a B+ For Badass effort though.
@King Kong Not really, in the fight the fight Shredder is slowly getting overwhelmed and with his experience he knows it and changes tactics. He uses a psychological attack that gets Leo to screw up and seizes on the opportunity to trick the others into weakening themselves and is about to shrink the numbers gap. If the fight had just kept going on how it had before that he would of eventually lost.
@@Warcodered01 even with Leo at the point of his spear, didn’t Shredder state the Mikey, Donny, and Raph could’ve overwhelmed him at the cost of perhaps one?
I'm a film addict. This MIGHT BE a GOAT "Villain Entrance" contender with Jaws and a couple others. The lighting, the tempo, the music, the set design, and the REVERENT silence is all utter perfection.
@@SDPLISSKEN81 FINALLY!! Someone else hears this. I wish I had the patience to learn how to mix cause I can hear a mash-up of Shredder's Theme and Raining Blood in my brain.
This man, Mr. James Saito, was the best shredder of them all. I love the roof fight with the turtles in the end. With all-do respect to the actors who replaced Saito in the sequals, but did you know that he was replaced in the sequals because he was too good as shredder? He was way too dark. Can you believe that?! :)
He is, but James Saito did such a great job as Shredder, and he was so intense, that he had to be replaced in the sequal because they needed someone to tone it down to make it more G-rated for the kids.
Of all the years I have been watching the original Ninja Turtles cartoon as a kid, I didn't know until I got the DVD collection, that James Avery was the father/uncle in the Fresh Prince of Bel Air. I couldn't believe it.
***** Charm, yes: Dramatic structure, believability, and solid plot, no. Compare to Casablanca, Citizen Kane, Ben Hur, Empire Strikes Back, Jurassic Park, or the Dark Knight Rises - those are great movies. If all you ever watch is Michael Bay, then all you'll ever see will disappoint you.
New movies don't have the balls to dedicate this kind of entrance to a character anymore. Almost a full two minutes before he even utters his first words. It gives you time to develop an unforced understanding of the character. I also love how they didn't try to get a ripped body builder to play Shredder.
This movie didn’t have to go as hard as it did but I’m so thankful for it. Amazing soundtrack. Great writing. And the voice acting for 1990s is top notch.
Back in 2001 or 2002, I was watching this movie while my dog was outside. I had the windows open and my dog could hear the movie. He started growl and howl during this scene as soon as Shredder started to speak. This movie was just different, man.
I'd say Skeletor as well. Masters of the Universe. He didn't play at all and killed one of his warriors for failure. Sarod definitely took one for the team!
Bay's Shredder is nowhere near the vibe the 1990 Shredder's at when he walks into the room. The scariest part is when Danny says "Master", receiving Shredders undivided attention; when that happens you best have something important to say. His badass demeanor is no joke.
DOOMVSHALO I believe this film stays with us because of how young people can either be mentored or misled. Danny is really the character that has the biggest arc because his father doesn't understand or is indifferent to his inner turmoil. So Danny seeks out a charismatic father figure whom misleads all of his followers: the Shredder. But when he meets the captured mentor Splinter: he begins to lead back to a path inner peace and reconciliation with his father. "The Karate Kid" (1984) has a similar dynamic: the mentor (Myagi) and the misleader (Reese)..
This was a MUCH different Turtles compared to the cartoon we were used to watching back then. It was dark and gritty but also humorous when it needed to be.
He is the ultimate villain, literally defeats all four of the turtles single handedly, then challenges their master to be brought down by his desire for revenge.
"Money cannot buy the honor which you have earned tonight. You'll make us all proud. Only effort, discipline, loyalty, earn the right to wear the Dragon dogi. You're all here because the outside world rejects you. This is your family. I am your father. I want you all to become full members of the Foot."
A perfect demonstration that you don't need 500lb CGI behemoths to deliver an intimidating Shredder. Just great lighting, music, cinematography and design.
Holding a company meeting so that he can publicly recognize a loyal employee and give him a promotion followed up by a motivational speech. Such a great boss!
I love the gritty look of this movie. It reminds me of The warriors or Escape from New York. The long shadow that The Shredder casts that slowly gets smaller when he gets closer to the spot light, and the camera that rotates to behind the back, and the subtle guitar riffs that play. This movie is very 1980's in its presentation. It was filmed in 1989.
It looks like a city based film. Every film nowadays make any city film look like some utopian glossy world. Oh a garbage bag in an alley. NOPE. Sewers, pipes. Especially in the "skid row" places C'MON. That needs to be the look BROUGHT BACK!
It's cool how they portrayed the shredder as a gang leader/crime boss in this movie. The fact that this movie was set in a realistic world made this movie so unique and an all-time favorite of mine
I remember seeing this in theatres 8 years old. The drums echoed in the theatres. Shredder looked completely different to the cartoon. i remember just being mind blown. Will always be the best entrance of any villain. period.
"There is a new enemy, freaks of nature, who interfere with our business! You are my eyes and ears, find them! Together we will punish these.... Creatures.... These..... Turtles!!!" "Master..." This movie = my childhood
This scene right here shows that it is not the suit that makes shredder badass but the attitude! His eyes as he is talking look very threatening compared to that robotic crap from Micheal Bays movie.
Nicholas Mallard The mecha suit was designed so he was able to take on the turtles because they are stronger so he needed his armour to be stronger and for the 200th time it is not Michael Bays movie how many trailers have been out to tell you this small fact it is not his movie get it through your head he was 1 of 6 producers not the director.
Vince Brown Didn't I just say to you in another comment section on this video that Micheal Bay was the producer for this film. The movie was garbage in my opinion and it reeks of Bay's BS!
Vince Brown My 90s shredder is powerful comment section in which I replied to you after you called me a hater. Your right everyone is entitled to have an opinion just like we discussed in that comment section. You like this movie I don't.
+joshua hill Man what!!!!! Lol I was thinking the same... sheeeeiit, so I guess if you're black, male, and not a professional athlete/entertainer then you get first dibs at joining lmao. Shredder is a badass in this movie though..excellent scene.
@Josh Avitia Bruh that's cool and all but Shredder would never reject you and give you purpose. Plus you will look like a badass ninja serving the damn Shredder.
They need to retcon the movies after this and do a sequel that follows the same tone, cinematography, music score, actual martial arts stunts and choreography, detailed costumes ect. Its 2020 and it still lives up to this day.
Seeing the power he holds over those kids is even more terrifying now that I am an adult. And it reminds me of the rampant urban decay of the time this movie came out, which was a very real problem affecting kids in those days. So yeah this hits home...still.
Between frank langella as skeletor and James Saito here, these are the absolute case studies for how to adapt a cartoon villain. THIS is the shredder as he was always supposed to be
@@OlJackBurton my friend Jack, i sincerely endorse you seeking out masters of the universe the movie. It is a product that can only have come from the late 80s. Bring popcorn.
@@OlJackBurton Yes and an actor by the name of Dolph Lundgren was perfect as He-man. Another by the name of Frank Langella, just like James Saito here, took a villain that was a comic relief in the cartoon and made him scary as shit.
