They've been on the red carpet for decades and they're a visual feast of cut and clarity. We're talking about Harry Winston's diamonds on the red carpet on Oscar night, rather than the people that wear them. The Beverly Hills jeweller first allowed Academy Award nominated actress Jennifer Jones to borrow diamonds for her Oscar appearance in 1945. The practice caught on and now it's a Hollywood tradition.
The total carat weight of some of the diamonds in this exclusive collection is absolutely mind boggling. 120-carat necklaces, and 40-carat diamond chokers and bracelets are the norm. The exquisite pieces will find a temporary home around the elegant necks of some of the film industry's hottest leading ladies on Oscar night. Price tags can top the 1.3 million-dollar mark.
Leading men will not be left out on Oscar night. They too will have a chance to glitter in offerings such as watches and tiepins from the Beverly Hills jeweller. In years past, according to Harry Winston spokesman, Jim Kersey, some lucky actors have even been able to hold onto their borrowed items courtesy of wealthy wives or girlfriends after the event.
Harry Winston is one of the world's leading jewellers with salons in Geneva, Paris, Beverly Hills, Tokyo and Osaka and New York. The company which bears his name today was established in 1932 by Harry Winston, the son of a New York jeweller.
Harry Winston was known, and is still regarded today, as the "King of Diamonds," a title he earned through 70 years of devotion to gems. From the moment he set up as a 19-year-old, he showed remarkable insight and resourcefulness. Perhaps his greatest talent was learning to allow jewels, rather than metal, to shape the design of his jewels.
He employed light, flexible, platinum settings, which allowed for three-dimensional arrangements of precious stones. This produced new levels of brilliance which emphasized the jewels' own shapes.
With the death of Harry Winston in 1978, the world lost one of the most important and colorful diamond connoisseurs of modern times.

Although known primarily for diamonds, Harry Winston is also a trove of the finest rubies, emeralds, sapphires and pearls. Harry Winston has held more than 60 of the world's 303 major diamonds more than any other individual, including governments and royalty. The company has sold some of the world's largest diamonds, including the Jonker, Vargas, Star of Sierra Leone, and the Taylor- Burton.
