This! I have recently been pondering getting rid of stuff to simplify my life and help my mental health. I need to find what would work for me to not buy items that would bring me back to this state
Another way to think about it is: (your country) moving cleaning. As in, the next time you move, is this item worth the effort of packing it up, moving it or paying someone to move it, unpacking it and maybe having to rent/buy a larger space to accommodate it? Clarifies a lot for me.
I love videos like these. I've been decluttering for 2 years and got to a level where I have no 'excess' stuff, so I can't actually declutter anymore I kind of miss it 😂
Not knocking you, you seem lovely but for such a young person you sure have a lot of stuff. One thing I do is immediately cut down delivery boxes and take them to the trash. At night before bedtime everything goes back to it’s designated place. I love the idea of bed linens but I don’t store any. I have one really good quality sheet set so I remove it, wash it and it goes back on the bed.
I found your idea to only keep things your descendants/spouse/fam might want very interesting. My idea of the Swedish death cleaning is the opposite 😂😂 Like, don't save anything because someone might want it if you don't want it, because most of the time ppl don't want your old stuff and are burdened by it. So I would only keep what I personally like and not save things I don't like in case someone else wants it. I feel like this is a big cultural issue sometimes (Im German) as grandparents save up their never used china or even build a whole house for children who live somewhere else and don't want old plates 😅
This was my understanding of the Swedish death cleaning. That you’re not burdening your family/ friends with having to clean out rubbish and taking up loads of their time having to sort through everything you own. So basically being a minimalist so you don’t burden other people with your stuff when you die. I’ve been there sorting through storage units of house clearance things when someone passed and it’s a lot to do whilst trying to live your life as well as grieve. I don’t find it a burden but if I can personally help the person who will be clearing my stuff out when I die. I would like to try and make it slightly easier for them
Hi. I also consider myself a minimalist and heard of Swedish death cleaning a while back. My take on it was that you sort through your belongings so that when you die, your family and loved ones aren’t left with all of your hoard of belongings to sort through which makes the grieving process etc easier on them. I hadn’t heard your take on it before that you keep things other people would want when you die. Wondering if someone who knows more about the concept can shed light on this? Thanks and great work 😊
Great job! Its always easy to judge people in videos but its not so easy to do it yourself😅 The minimal mom has done a video about the concept. There are two questions to ask yourself: 1 Will I ever need it? And 2 Will anyone I know be happier if I save it? Maybe the video can help you declutter even more: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-8vmjd3SfTeo.html To have separat "tools" to declutter is another great tip: something for different types of trash and recyclabels, something for donations, for things to sell and a bin/box for things your not ready to part with. A memory bin is also a great advice. I liked your video! Keep it going! Greetings from Germany:)
You're mostly right. One part of it is to make it easier to sort through everything after you die. For a lot of people who own houses though, they will do a 'death clean' when they get older and feel like they want to get an apartment instead, not having to deal with everything that comes with owning a house. They usually give away most of their stuff then since a small apartment wont have room for most of their stuff, coming from a house and maybe years of hoarding. They usually give their kids and grandkids what they wont need and sell/throw away everything else.
I am doing my Swedish death clean at the time of watching this. I am a minimalist but when you approach your possessions with the thought of if I was to die would I wish to burden my loved ones with sorting through my belongings when I could do it now beforehand… all of a sudden I have using this rationale found so many items that have remained in the past for several reasons 1/ I’ll decide about that later 2/ it cost a fortune 3/ I have more space than possessions… and now using this method… it’s like I’ve turned a corner on this latest walk through. It’s very uplifting living with only that you really want. A good question I asked was if I had very little funds would I buy this today but ultimately my question was would my kids be relieved if this was all there was to sort through? Thanks for lovely vid watching you work out your relationship with stuff and move on that you could… rinse and repeat and buy less and less would be my advise x
This is a really good state of mind at your young age to be in. Keep it up. That way when you get to be my age (59) you won’t want to sit in the middle of your house/apartment and cry because you are so overwhelmed. ❤❤
I’m in the process of becoming a minimalist and your videos have given me so much inspiration and hope for myself in my journey. Thank you so much for documenting your experiences, for showing the ups and downs, the failures and successes throughout. I look forward to more videos as time goes on.
Omg you are so much fun, i turned 60 recently, started my decluttering yourney, have been kind of collector of cute items and such, i donated sooo much items the past months, and still going strong! These videos inspire me 😊
I’ve had Invisalign treatment. Also worked over forty years in dentistry. There is no reason to save your old aligners as they can not be reused. Because there are bonded attachments placed while using them and they can’t be replicated. But, you do want to keep and use your retainers.
The After Work Channel: I have a lot of stuff Me: This is so relatable, but idk if she's like me... The After Work Channel: I'm trying to be ruthless this time [with the minimalist decluttering] Me: Ok but I don't think she understands how much stuff I kept out of guilt... The After Work Channel: I still have my Invisalign retainers from 2 years ago Me, a 23 year old: *stares at my dolls from when I was 8 years old that I don't want* Ok, yeah. She's my type of people. Thank you for sharing your minimalist journey on here! Your authenticity and bubbly personality makes these fun and heart warming to watch.
Thanks for a fun video! Here's a thought on the old laptop: Either make a note of what the winning password was ;) or transfer everything (or mostly everything -- maybe take an hour or two to determine what can be deleted?) to an external hard drive. (Yes, potentially pricy, but smaller + perhaps tech-wise more long-lasting.) But yes, how fun to have old footage to enjoy! And another thought on the beauty products: Maybe prioritize finishing up the last bits of things -- move them to the front/put them in the shower/etc. to be used up first *before* you go back to the half-full ones. That way the last bit isn't wasted *or* you discover your really didn't like them and then getting rid of that product is also justified ;) (But, of course, you do you ;) ) And, as others have mentioned, ask the donation centers if they take damaged clothes as textile recycling -- or maybe there's a textile recycling drop-off place somewhere? Cheers from Germany!
I don’t think ppl realize that at least in the states the donation centers don’t keep all garments. You def can give ripped items because they recycle the fabric - we’ll likely they send it out. Say bathing suits and things they upcycle the textile. Also someone may be going to the charity center in need of a painting or work shirt or something they don’t mind destroying . If the place deem it unusable they dispose of it themselves so why don’t ppl just chuck it all in one place and get rid of it . Whether they throw it away or you it’s still the same eco impact so may as well let them decide what can be circulated to others (as long as it’s not straight up trash of course)
Just stumbled upon this video and the fact that we have the same IKEA glass mug (which I, funnily, am currently drinking out of) made me feel oddly connected. :D Also, great video. This is the best motivator for me ♥
Just found your channel and watched this episode. You mentioned that charity shops wouldn't want anything with holes or stains on them. They do, put in a separate bag and tell them they are rags so no good to sell. They can sell the rags by weight and get money for them, as they'll be used to make recycled fabrics etc.
Your Soft Voice & Seeing The Process is Great Backdrop as I'm in the 'Process' Thank You. Have a severe back injury. But I am only one to organize anything. 5 Categories : NEEDS First : Toiletries . then. CLEAN.Bathroom Medicines. then ...CLEAN.Linen Closet Bills 5 catgry sort. . New File /.Pay•Keep Clothing. One Drawer. One Box Clear Entry. Dust / Wash /Floor As far as I can think for now ~~~~~
Thank you for sharing the process. Your video has helped me so much, I have been downsizing, donating, selling, and throwing away, but still feel I have too much stuff, you have inspired me to go through it all again. I think the same as you regarding, keeping because I don't want to upset the person that gave it, also what am I keeping to pass along at the end of my life, when I can give it now. 😊
I too did Swedish Death cleaning with my stuff!! It took me two years and 3 1/2 days. I'm not old, I did a Swedish Death cleaning to make room for my husband's hoard!! He doesn't want to get rid of anything!! And we were running out of space literally. I don't regret doing a Swedish Death cleaning because I now officially have less stuff and I am feeling like a minimalist! 😊
@@TheAfterWorkChannel my anxiety was overwhelmed by all the things I had, I was a hoarder, and I stumbled upon simple living and minimalism and decluttering on RU-vid when I looked up cleaning videos and now I'm hooked! And my life has never been better... It took years to finally get rid of it all but I'm so glad I did.. Now I can breath easy and focus on my mental health 🥰
@@unicornshark5527 that’s amazing, especially dealing with mental health at the same time! Well done, I’m glad to hear it’s made a positive impact on you. I feel the same, it’s like minimalism has made my brain less cluttered too ☺️
you make it sound like a suicide plan omg. IT's more so that, preferable when poeple are old, they want to make sure that they don't leave their lod ones with their junk. And their place is filled with things you love and necessities
@@TheAfterWorkChannel I’m still dearly wishing for a Switch sequel, but until then that game has a space in my heart and on my shelf (even if I don’t remember the last time I played it 😅)
I'd recommend to just move the digital memories to an external harddrive and declutter it all. Think about it, other wouldn't know your passpord to that old laptop after all.
It's easy to see but very hard to do....I am going through this process but I will do anyway....no matter how much time does it take. I stopped buying except absolute necessary ( like food to eat and things to stay hygiene) in first place because of my slow progress.
Can I ask you why you have a chest of drawers that you don’t use in your wardrobe. Can I suggest you swap the suitcase to the corner of the wardrobe and move the drawers over so that they are useable. The high viz vest should be in your car in case of breakdowns.
Hi Helen valid questions and suggestions - the drawers are empty and belong to my landlord unfortunately I don’t have anywhere else to store them. I just find clutter is collected into the draws so I keep them inaccessible to prevent that! ☺️ I already have safety gear in my car so the high vis vest was surplus to requirement but agree that people should have things like that in their cars just in case!! ☺️
It's not what we do before we die. I've been doing it without realizing it since i was a child. It's literally doing it KNOWING we are going to die and the reason we let go is because we cannot take it with us. It's why I'm a mininamilst. I understand the concept of want, verses THE CONCEPT OF USE. I never utilize the 'need.' I use the word 'use.' If i cannot or do not use it, i do not have it. It's that simple. I have less stuff altogether than you do just in your bedroom... It kind of pisses me off seeing all these 'im getting into this' and then completely lying about concepts without doing ANY research at all.
I used to work as a professional organizer and this video drove me nuts. Never mind that I understand the Swedish Death Clean to mean just getting rid of everything you don't currently use on a regular basis. You touched the same things SO MANY TIMES. Why not just go into the bathroom with a trash bag and throw everything into it you're getting rid of? Touch ONCE. Look, generally people will expand their stuff to fit whatever space they have. You seem to have done that. You have SO MUCH STUFF that there's no need to keep an ugly grandma dish for decoration in the living room. There are libraries and e-books. If you're not in school (whether attending or teaching or researching), there's no need to keep so many books unless you're actually referencing/re-reading them. There is no need to have more than one personal computer and one work computer. You need to get MUCH more ruthless and disciplined. Why did you shove a box of junk into the attic? You have os many cupboards with empty shelves - use those.
Idk about where you live, but in my city we have a ton of little free libraries, where I drop books, magazines and old media.. or even our local libraries take dvds or cds. Just an alternative to the charity shops or bins
I always put a booking for collection of my declutter and how many bags and start declutter and it will be collected. Works great. I don't own a car, so this is a perfect way of actually getting it out of the house.❤
I would definitely get a external 2TB harddrive and store your old data on that. No need to keep a whole pc and laptop. If it does break down eventually getting your date back from it, is much harder. Also harddrive is much less space :D
Recently trying to clean my room and closet and saw your video and it gave me great ideas! It’s hard for me to get rid of things and I take out but I also buy things 🤦🏻♀️ it’s a working process 😊
I’m 58 and doing a major Swedish death cleaning. I’m finding that dragging a category, like papers, out to my carport and being that much closer to he recycling bin, garbage can, or my car, makes it easier to let things go.
Tip: You can toss your soiled makeup and toiletry bags right in the washing machine with your towels (hang to dry). You can also use the dishwasher if you have one, also for caps 🧢.
I feel you in every step of your decluttering journey i recently returned to my homeland after 16 years abroad with 266 boxes from 2 containers plus i have my late parents stuff n our stuffs brfore we left the country n on top of that we have stuff we brought back when we were studying in US.. we are totally drowned
Just chip away at it bit by bit, I’ve been decluttering for over a year now! You’re right it’s so overwhelming but just remember you don’t have to tackle it all at once 💕
Random comment, but you should actually donate things with housing to charity shops, because they have people that collect them for the fabric, and it gets weighed in bags and the shop gets paid for the weight
What really excites me about decluttering and organization is Paper Clutter!! I love seeing it and organizing it. I would highly suggest to make a paper management system (there are many videos about paper clutter management as well). You'll never ever have paper clutter in your life! I made several systems for myself: 1) Life papers (ID's, birth certificate, anything that's a pain to reproduce if lost), 2) General papers (Bills, taxes, invoices, contracts etc.. ) and 3) Daily papers for work/studies/art. Each category has a folder and that's where all papers go once they get into the house.
@@TheAfterWorkChannelCould you instead back up the files to your current PC or an external drive and the cloud so you can let the old laptop go? It is a lovely memory to look back on so I feel like it would be better to make a proper back up that you can access easily. Laptop motherboards sometimes frizz out, hard drives can die. Like how Xmas lights can work perfectly one year only to stop working when you take them out of the box the next year.
