Definitely excited about seeing this special car, considering I’ve worked in the industry, so can talk about bulk wine transport without sounding like I’m bloviating lol. Wine tankers are definitely still in use for some of the big time bull wineries, although most of the bulk wine is usually transported in 6600 gallon stainless tank trailers around (for the most part. (A large winery I worked for has four 60,100 gallon tanks outside just for receiving truck shipments of juice and fresh wine during crush season.) Sometimes bulk wine for international shipments is pumped into 4-500 gallon totes that are basically a giant “bag in box” bladder, and are stackable. Smaller domestic shipments are shipped in ≈400 gal stainless “porta tanks” that can be skidded off and used as their own storage or fermentation vessel. And to Leighton’s point, a vineyard I used to live/work at has a block of pre-prohibition dryfarmed vines whose fruit was picked into wood 50lb lug boxes and shipped via SP in unrefrigerated box cars back to Chicago for “home winemakers for ‘sacramental wines’.” Lol

As an ex-railroader and an ancient history junky: Wine was one of the first commodities transported in bulk over, for the time, long distances. Large ceramic jugs and amphorae were packed in racks on ships for transport across the Mediterranean and on the rivers and canals of the ancient world. Wine was most often consumed mixed with water as a purification agent as well as for it's nutritional value. And the ancients greatly valued some of it's other effects as well. Olive oil was another bulk commodity from ancient times. As a clerk for the B&O, 1970-74 I would mark olive oil tankers as well as box cars with empty tins in and loaded tins out of the Pompeian Olive Oil facility in Baltimore, Md. The ancients were not that different than us.

We have them here in South Africa too of course (ours are stainless steel interestingly). One story told to me by an Oomie (Uncle or rather Old Head for you the US 🙂), the one night they were shunting and one of the wagons were not in the clear. Well, as you can imagine, they managed to nick it and it tore open a gash in the side of the tank. He says the shunters went running for 2 liter Coke bottles to capture the "juice". He says that evening they were shunting very "nicely" and wagons were flying here, there and everywhere! No further incidents luckily!

We used to ship milk by the railcar too here in Northeast. I'm not sure how popular it was everywhere else but at one point we had what were essentially reefer cars with two steel tanks inside of the commodity area that went along the line and were loaded at designated collection points and were shipped to the nearby cities to be bottled and distributed.

My first experience with a live steam locomotive was Knott’s Berry Farm and RGS 41. My first experience with trains at all, including riding on one, was at this very museum in 1994 or 1995, riding that very trolly you showed running at the start. I was only 3-4 years old, and I remember it crystal clear. I remember one of those wine cars was not as rusty as it is now (assuming it’s the same multi-dome tank car I remember / was in the poster my grandma bought back since it was the trolly running past there).

@Hyce, between 1943 and 2005 the McWilliams Brothers wine company here in Australia used a fleet of eleven 10,500 gallon tank cars to move wine and fortified products like Tawny Port from its processing plant at Yenda (near Griffith) in the New South Wales Riverina to its bottling plant in Sydney. They had no obvious identifying heralds except the wagon code and a large Roman numeral I to XI. They were also always secured locked while in transit. Most alcohols and spirits transported by rail in Australia tended to be stored in wooden barrels or steel kegs and carried in open 4 wheel wagons. Stories abound of shunters and wagon-fitters who learned to identify the precious cargo in yards and steal small(ish) quantities by drilling thru wooden floor decking and barrel alike, draining a portion into their billycans and then stoppering both holes again. In the late 70s, my parents described the joy of a wine-bottling party they threw with some friends who lived on a farm in the tiny NSW wheatbelt town of Condobolin. The wine arrived in a plastic bulk container on one of those aforementioned 4-wheel open trucks, and they collected it themselves from the yard. They most vividly remember the red stains virgin wine tends to leave on one's face and lips. And that precious little wine actually got bottled in the end...

One of the unique challenges of "tank car wines and spirits" is sometimes making sure they actually stay closed the whole trip. The FRA cited Jose Cuervo for improper tank securement one time on our line for 7 tank cars full of the stuff. Somewhere between Mexico and Ohio they had been *ahem* investigated by a curious pack of onlookers and several hundred gallons had magically "dissapeared" we were told.
