Dave (the 36-year-old with the impressive beard) was raised almost completely sheltered from pop culture by his strict military family. He was homeschooled his entire life until he entered college. He legitimately has very little knowledge of music and bands from before 2000.
John (the guy in the dark on the right) has been a MUSIC LOVER since he was born in the 1960's. Problem is, he rarely knows or fully grasps the lyrics. Dave (on the left), on the other hand, has never heard or rarely overheard the music John chooses to play for him, but tends to take lyrics literally, sometimes to unexpected ends.
John remains in the dark both as a wry play on the situation but also because of legal issues causing his attorney to recommend maintaining a low profile.
We did not write nor do we own the Copyright for the song used in this Educational Video. This is a real, honest reaction to a song Dave have never consciously heard before and/or listened to with intent. Any "facts" offered by John "Doh" are based more on his remembrances than on any actual research. Please feel free to correct him. He loves it.

Really have to suggest to anyone with the slightest interest in Rush, now that Oppenheimer is in the theaters and people are learning more about the Manhattan project, that you actually listen to the Rush song by that same name!

I am not sure if this is exactly right or not but someone else commented that this song was about Neil's relationship with Alex and Geddy. They were very close friends and had a strong brotherhood so I could see it being about them. Either way it is a lovely song.

OK, so now I understand! Glad you posted this, but really think John's audio would have helped quite a lot - lol

This is really a special song - to me but also to a lot of people judging from comments both here and made to me over the years from others. It is short by Rush standards, but still has all the aspects one expects: great musicality, time signature changes, driving bass lines, amazing guitar licks, and awesome drum flourishes. But above all, it's the lyrics that I think capture peoples' emotions. And when I think about how young these three musical geniuses were when they made this song and album, I am just flabbergasted. Now Dave can listen to the whole Permanent Waves album, and like all of us who have many times over, he can endlessly decide and then change his mind on which song is best. Thanks for sharing this video, despite the technical flaws. I guess it is time to find a Rush song that Dave won't like - maybe Tai Shan? Everyone loves to hate that song.

I love this song, and your analysis of the lyrics in my opinion are spot on... and John, just so you know, this reaction is hurt by your "absence". This is a song I like to use to introduce Rush "virgins" to the band, but I make sure to give them a copy of the lyrics, because often people get mesmerized by the music and don't pay attention to the message.

Hey guys. With the passing of Robbie Robertson today can you listen to his song "Showdown at Big Sky" off his EPIC solo album. He was a founding member of the iconic The Band.

Entre Nous Between Us. I've always assumed this was a long term relationship song. You always need to keep space to grow into. If you are too much alike you will not grow in your relationship. Things said in long term relationships should mostly stay Entre Nous...

One of the rare occasions when you will find Neil departing from conventional grammatical usage: the lyrics should be "...for you and me (not I) to grow. Even though it has always raised my hackles as a recovering English professor, I have always forgiven him this departure as the better sonic choice. 😉

Hold on a sec! Wait. What? I just checked the songs and artists you guys have reacted to so far. Have you SERIOUSLY not reacted to Bob Seger yet??????? Bob Seger is one of the greatest song writers of all time. One of those song writers who paints a masterpiece with the lyrics to his songs. You need to go *there*. I highly recommend "Roll Me Away" as your intro to Bob Seger awesomeness!

Nice to see you again. I missed you (both). Sorry to be picky, but an entrée is something you eat for dinner. Entre is pronounced on-tra. Nous is pronounced like "knew."

All you english people pronounce this wrong and it actually means something different. The way you pronounce it, it actually means "enter us" instead of "Between us" which is the right meaning. So it is pronounced Entre (uh sound at the end as in duh).
