The new podcast entitled "Tantra Illuminated with Dr. Christopher Wallis" is a journey through the depths of the human experience, as viewed through the lens of the tradition called nondual Shaiva Tantra. This multi-format podcast delves into the fascinating world of Classical Tantra and its intersections with philosophy, neuroscience, psychology, and the broader world of spirituality. The podcast includes four types of episodes: conversations with prominent spiritual teachers and philosophers, readings of my translations from the original Sanskrit texts, guided meditations, and my own extemporaneous reflections on the spiritual life and the awakening process.
Today’s episode (#01) is a conversation, and I’m speaking with the renowned teacher Rupert Spira. Rupert, like myself, has been a spiritual practitioner since the age of 15. He began with Advaita Vedānta, as well as Sufi teachings and Fourth Way teachings, but the pivotal turning point in his spiritual life was meeting Francis Lucille, who introduced him to the Direct Path teachings of Ātmānanda Krishna Menon and the teachings of Tantric Shaivism, which Francis had received from his teacher, Jean Klein. Rupert is the other of You Are the Happiness You Seek and many other short books. He lives in Oxford, where I was fortunate to meet with him face to face, although the conversation you’ll hear today was recorded remotely. Rupert holds regular meetings in the UK, US and Italy, as well as online webinars and Retreats at Home. I personally find his long-form guided meditations to be amongst the most powerful and well-crafted guided meditations available anywhere, especially those in his audio download called Transparent Body, Luminous World, which is inspired (in part) by the Vijñāna-bhairava-tantra.

Christopher, thank you for this effort to come into a deep discussion with other spiritual teachers. I personally feel there where inaccuracies on Rupert’s expositions, and I would have loved him to enter into a true conversation with you more, to perhaps sharpen each other and make some discoveries or nuances together. I can imagine it’s not always possible. Conversation is an art! It would really be very exciting to see a conversation between you and Igor Kufayev! Are you acquainted with his work? You two could really reach a different level of depth! All the best!

Rupert Spira is my guru, so that is why I came here. But I like almost everything, what you were saying during this awesome conversation. I mean, when Rupert has different opinion than yours, then I will always stay with him, but luckily you both are thinking about the same thing, but just spoke about it, in slightly different words. Thank you.

Excited to absorb more of your wisdom here I have had profound movement from practicing the empowered means which I first learned about from your book Tantra Illuminated 🙏 another spiritual teacher I follow is Igor Kufayev in which I have had invaluable support with my awakening helping me to let go and trust the naturalness of the expansion. I feel like I received some blessing from the discussion. One nice thing about Rubert is that his talks and meditations are always direct, experiential encounters with awareness. Not talking about the spiritual path; but an actual taste of the reality. I am just discovering Christopher. But what I have encountered thus far has been good. Thanks to both.

It is indeed a great idea to invite Igor Kufayev!! There are so many points on this conversation where I notice inaccuracies about the real process. There seems to be a dual reminiscence still present in Rupert’s expositions.

Hi, I had an spontaneous awakening 6 years ago, and I've been following Rupert and others non dual teachers since. But they never talk about energies of the body, they said it is just another experience. But the more I abide in our true nature the more I feel this energy in me and in others, I'm starting to look for some explanation, do you think this is kundalini? Would love some help in this understanding. 🙏

For me the podcast was profound, enlightning, and a beautiful transmission of the experience of beingness. Thank you both for having the courage to elucidate the path and non-path giving me pointers so that I can surrender more and more from self to non-self. My mind tells me and I feel at a threshold allowing more sinking and relaxing into beingness. There's a fully letting go that wants to happen and it will! Thank you from the bottom of my heart! ❤️

Great conversation. Excellent intellectual journey: providing a wonderful experience of Listening and indeed it is pointing to something beyond the Mind. Like a good meal, a nice walk, a hard days work: a session of mantra is a wonderful part of a full life; as long as it is not engaged with desire to achieve something or as an addictive experience, but is mantra for just being, which has many health benefits, just like a good nights sleep providing rejuvenation and also dreams.

Thank you! Spira's teachings and approach are new to me, but the questions Wallis asked sparked some new contemplations 🙏 I will have to have a second listen. The brief dialogue on both of your experiences with younger students was intriguing. I am 29yo and many of my peers are curious about the spiritual path but when they have a peak experience they often get caught up in a new age narrative about it (that can often be commodified) and/or as Wallis mentioned keep pursuing the peak experience.

Thank you, both, Christopher and Rupert. Great talk! I'll add few comments regarding vimarsha/self-reflectivity and it's paradoxical presence in the nnon-dual experience. The age old dispute between Advaita and Shaiva philosophers whether there is or isn't self-reflectivity within pure awareness is resolved in nirvikalpa samadhi, when selfreflectivity is present, yet no object, whatsoever. The knower and the known and knowing are one single wave. It is glorious! It's like a golden flame, that one IS and without observing or objectifying, is self-luminous with self-knowledge, one without the other. Primordial, original HOME. The truth is, advaita and Trika Shaiva interpretation of nirvikalpa experience are complementary and are not really in contrast, except for philosophers without actual experience - they will find plenty of differences, cause there the objective is to find disagreement and compete whose knowledge is more precise. Being self-aware in the condition of primordial awareness is indeed paradoxical and can't be understood without having really gone that deep and experience this directly. Only then this distinction will have been properly absorbed and understood, without resorting to philosophies. The awe and shock of this miraculous paradox will stay forever. Self-awareness as in self-reflected state of oneself (vimarsha aspect) is inherent property of sat-cit-ananda. I would define Sat-cit-ananda as bliss itself which is aware and awareness of being with all these three attributes being completely inseparable. Shiva is never really without Shakti.
@christopherwallis751
@christopherwallis751 8 месяцев назад
I agree with what you say here -- we have yet to find out if Rupert does. I'm not sure why he wants to attribute the power of self-reflection only to the finite mind. I'll try to get into it with him next time.

Fascinating podcast. So many gems for reflection, and of course, I absolutely believe in the practical application of these teachings and revelations, because in any case we are talking about Freedom... Those phases that you have named, that blind spot within the experience, I don't know whether my experience was Vedantic or Tantric, probably, as you have mentioned, they are both, but I do know that awakening consisted of disidentifying myself with the object of the experience, and then re-experiencing this existence from a new internal point of reference...I simply wanted to stop suffering, and by understanding how the experience of suffering occurred I was able to detach myself from it to observe it again this time from a new point of view, it is a kind of Resurrection...Where as you have described, one experiences what you have talked about, I would describe it with the phrase from the B. Gita, when Lord Krishna says: "I am the Field and the Knower of the Field..." Wonderful Rupert Spira when he gets to the point of how to explain that...The amazing phrase of the Zen Master when he says: " if I speak I tell a lie..." Silence is the Truth, but we are experiencing a finite existence, although this is just a glimpse into what existence truly means! The infinite makes the finite possible... And realizing that is Liberating... Thank you for this wonderful conversation!! ❤❤🙏

WOW, Christopher, I was not aware of the third stage of the "falling away of I" and going beyond existence and non-existence in Shaivism. Traditionally Vedantic path leads to "I am Brahman" realization, which still involves reification of "I am", and which was always criticized by the Buddhists as being "eternalistic". But this "third stage" is exactly in line with the Buddhist approach, the middle way of Madhyamaka - avoiding conceptual extremes of nihilism (non-existence) and eternalism (existence), and realization of the emptiness of self ("I"). So, Shaivism and Buddhism, while employing perhaps somewhat different techniques and taking different paths, eventually lead to the same direct realization of the experiential presence of Awareness inseparable from all of its forms beyond any concepts (including those of existence, nonexistence, self etc).

For sure The Buddha would approve of the teachings being updated and translated and re imagined to every subsequent generation. After all, the original Sutras all begin with an explanation of who the audience was and what their background was for this very reason. The Buddha was re imagining the universal laws of nature to speak to the needs of his audience. Yes, of course he did this and he would be disappointed whenever there is a defense of egos getting in the way of this. But I do understand how difficult it is to use peer review and critique through collaboration in order to correct mistakes in the re imagined teachings and in the interpretations of the re imagined teachings. I don't know if this requires awakened masters to be analysts. For sure, this is the job of the experts to decide if the present day translations have mistakes or if the interpretations of them have mistakes. Collaboration often looks like egos defending themselves on the way to consensus making and multi-lateral agreement.

There is nothing wrong with contemplation. But the flaw in contemplation or becoming cognitively aware of your awareness, mindfulness, etc. defeats the whole notion behind Yoga as the complete stillness of thought. If you’re being truthful to the Vedas, the goal of Yoga is the secession of thought. Figuring out for oneself who or what the “I/Me” is does not constitute the experiential realization mention in the Vedas. There is nothing to be retranslated or reformulated for a new generation, the secession of thought means exactly that. Yes, reflecting on one’s own self does give you a clearer understanding and I admit the talk was very insightful but that is an intellectual pursuit. The Vedas are clear, the experiential experience is beyond the intellect. It is a life changing experience. The path is in fact the human brain’s own search for happiness and not your own intellectual search for happiness. You can search and search in a thousand different directions but you will never find it.

Imagine if Jesus or Buddha said "yeah, but you gotta give me money first". Stoppp it. Christopher, did you have to pay your spiritual teacher? Lots of money being made in the enlightenment business.

Um, what? the podcast is 100% free, and will remain so. and, for the record, yes I did give dakṣiṇā to my guru, as is traditional. And Jesus required his disciples to put all their money in a communally held 'pot'. Without some sacrifice on their part, most people don't value what they're given.

@@christopherwallis751 but you do charge money for the goood stuff. Spira making good money too. Both of you charlatans. Whatever you gotta tell yourself. Those who speak don't know... And real teachers don't ask for money.

LOL. Sounds like you're convinced, so no one will unconvince you. But for the record, you're wrong--the stuff that costs $ isn't any better than the stuff that doesn't. So you're just imagining things you want to believe. and the 'real teachers' who don't ask for money only don't because they've already made it, or because they have a job other than sharing teachings. come on back to the real world anytime now.

@@christopherwallis751 real teachers have already "made it"? "Made it"? Wow. There aren't any real teachers that are charging money or aren't charging money. It's a racket. Your followers will search and search and search. Hey guys, search harder....what your looking for is juuust over the horizon. Keep going to lectures and buying books and watching videos. Enlightenment is on its way! Chris, relax your body. Take a deep breath....you know the rest.

I am hopeful that these kind of conversations continue to distract men from default programming picking up guns and killing each other. What a lunatic world we lie in-- every war entirely generated by our imagination. Just allow yourself to savor mystery, or not. Step 1 laugh. Step 2 laugh at the doubt that is it.

Without wishing to disturb the obvious harmony, I am not convinced that the teaching of Cashmere Shaivism is fully integrated into Rupert's teaching. To indicate this, I enclose a link to a video with Swami Lakshmanjoo ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-4gUzlm3is2o.htmlsi=FGctm6Ri8wL10t9I

Hi Christopher, dacades ago Shakti came to me almost violently. As a person without any kind of spiritual or at least philosophical socialization at that time I needed 19 hell-like years to understand what happened. Now my inner focused attention, which I somehow are and which does not require any effort of will, seems to lead me incessantly to the climax described by Lakshmanjoo. It's almost undescribable. You are my primary source on my autodidactic trip to understand all that and I am extemely thankfull for you to exist and spread your knowledge ❤
