Watching you struggle with that tiny router plane was one of the most frustrating things! I inwardly cheered when you decided to use such a tool for that job, it was a great idea, shame you picked the little one: the full size Veritas would have made short work of it!

Funny but I built an SG from a piece of douglas fir as a test mule on a CNC. I was just learning how to use the machine and didn't want to screw up a good piece of mahogany. I have to ad there's something deeply satisfying and calming about using a chisel to carve out the wood. It really is relaxing. You're absolutely right Ben, you don't have to have every tool under the sun to build a guitar. Your craftsmanship is simply a thing of beauty. Thanks for your inspiration.

That was deeply irresponsible of you, Ben! You said, out loud, on a RU-vid channel, "Japanese joinery this ain't." You know what this means, right? Yes. It means you're going to have to do a guitar build using Japanese joinery. But it's okay. I'm with you for the 5- or 6-hundred episodes it'll take.

I made a Les Paul type guitar at home. I tried to fit the neck in this way. After much heartache, the unfinished neck is on a shelf; and I use it as test tools. I ended up buying new wood; and modifying the neck joint to the PRS style.

I don't know Ben, i take quite a bit away from your shows sometimes and i have been building Guitars for 30 years. I"m no John Monteleoni but i am capable of turning out a player. I'm also a Southpaw, so it pays for me to make my own. I find the left hand Guitar market lacking. There's the likes of Maybury and Gordon Smith, who have both made me stunning instruments but they are expensive. Your content is excellent and if I'm ever flagging during a build, you usually have something to watch that will get me back into it. Thank you.

There is nothing more satisfying than a sharp chisel going through wood. I think it’s awesome that you use a lot of hand tools and do things the longer way it really shows that all you need is hard work, determination and some creativity to create something awesome.

I have always dreamed of building my own guitars, that has always been a life goal for me. My job can be a little stressful sometimes and there was the covid lockdown so I could not continue my other hobbies. I watched a lot of Crimson guitars videos and they motivated me to finally give it a try. (Now I have the money, free time and space to start building guitars, so why not?). One thing I can tell: Ben is absolutely right: you don't need all those fancy expensive tools to build a decent guitar. And yes, do give it a try if you are interested in building guitars. I was surprised how good my first guitar turned out. There is something beautiful about holding and playing a guitar that you have built yourself. There will be flaws of course, but this is how you learn. (And learn how to hide mistakes!) And I can also totally relate to Ben about choosing the more difficult building techniques: just to see if I'm able to do it and succeeding in it is so rewarding. So thanks Ben for being a great motivation for me! (By the way, I've built 3 guitars now!)

"You do need to know how to sharpen a tool" Le sigh. That's where it all falls apart. I don't know if my chisels are just crap, my technique is crap, my sandpaper is crap, if I'm just not being patient / stubborn enough...I have yet to produce a chisel significantly sharper than a flathead screwdriver 😭 There's always tomorrow for chisel-dreams to come true...

Really good. Wasn't sure what you were doing for a while, but the result looks great. I've been trying to do a dovetail neck joint with a repurposed Warmoth strat neck and it's not going well. I didn't really have enough wood to do a mortice type joint like you did. But thinking that would have been a lot easier.

People do some really fine Japanese joinery just with saws and chisels. Just takes talent and experience to keep refining those flat planes and straight angles, and make it fit to a negative micron so it can be press-fit into place with very little glue.

Man, that is SOOO much easier without the fretboard attached. I have absolutely cut neck tenons by hand, with no fretboard I can use my shoulder plane and the Lie Nielson rabetting block plane I bought specifically for cleaning up and fine tuning the sides of tenons like this. That and I love using my Japanese saws to cut the bulk of the material away. I mean come on, hand planes...

Hey Ben, quick question. I've seen you build set-neck guitars before, and you've never bothered with a neck tenon like this, as far as I can remember. You just route out a neck pocket, fit the neck and pocket, glue it in and call it a day. Does it have any *confirmed* advantage to do a tenon like this? Because to me it looks like extra work for a weaker joint, I don't know...

The original Les Paul SG is one of the most modern and elegant guitar designs ever created. Now about this project, what kind of pallet wood is making up the body? I'm sorry to point this out, but It looks like cheap pine and appears to be very thick (maybe 2"+ imperial) for an SGbody! Whatever horrid finish will you choose for this triple P90 monstrosity? Graceful is not how I'd describe it as it sits now, with the goofy undersize PRS headstock. I don't really understand the cheesy body/fancier inlaid face look. Are you going somewhere with this? Will it turn into a beautiful swan? Triple P90s, is there enough room left on the front for 6 knobs, and maybe to add a kitchen sink?

Quick question: is it ok to plonk your plane flat on the bench. As a nipper my dad used to yell at me if I did that with his planes. He kept telling me I’d damage/blunt the blade, and I had to put the plane on its side. Just wondering if my childhood was based on lies? 😂
