In this episode of the Plant-Powered People Podcast your hosts Michelle Cehn and Toni Okamoto talk with Deanne Thomsen about what it's like to be a Christian vegan, and how her faith and church community ties into her diet and plant-powered lifestyle. Deanne is the faith outreach coordinator for the Humane Society of the United States and shares lots of great resources for how to incorporate compassion and vegan living into small groups and beyond. As a culturally Jewish atheist, this was a new arena for me, and I found it very fascinating. I hope you enjoy the show as well!

I'm crying right now. I've been praying and asking God how he wants me to eat. I got my answer and I'm glad. I'm going to start a vegan diet. This changed my life. Thank you for answering my prayer God.

Thank you for this podcast. I am Christian and vegan and definitely wonder why more Christians aren't vegans or vegetarians. I think it has a lot to do with what has historically been done and that God gave us dominion over animals - this, however, does not mean that we can do whatever we want to other living beings. I definitely do not feel that it is biblical to treat animals the way that they are in factory farms. This, to me, is common sense. 💜

^ Absolutely true. Mercy is a huge theme throughout the bible, and it's how God wants us to be. Unfortunately, most Christians do not extend that mercy to animals, but I believe that is changing. Btw, please check out Creation Care Church, we're an online community of Christian vegans, and we do a live message on Friday evenings on Facebook... then it's posted here on RU-vid. :)

Don't get me wrong, I'm Whole Food Plant-Based however, the reason more Christians aren't vegans is because the Bible does not teach it. In fact, Genesis 9:3 says - "Every moving thing that liveth shall be meat for you; even as the green herb have I given you all things." We can't pick and choose the scripture that fits our personal beliefs. Later in the New Testament there was no law to the Gentiles to differentiate between clean and unclean. And Peter was given the vision of all animals being clean. So Jewish believers were reassured they were no longer to separate clean and unclean. It would be legalism to tell others its wrong to eat meat. Christianity and Veganism do not go hand in hand. This teaching is an example of Eisegesis and sounds a little more like activism not Christianity. ( ***Eisegesis reads into the text what the interpreter wishes to find or thinks he finds there. It expresses the reader's own subjective ideas, not the meaning which is in the text.)

Thank you for bringing her on. As a Christian and former carnivore, I have received a lot of hate from vegans because how could a benevolent God sacrifice animals. And from my Christian community the word dominion over animals is then our right to kill and eat them. But after prayerful consideration God reminded me and revealed to me that he created us vegan and their will be no killing in heaven. God made meat permissible but it was not His ideal. He sent his son Jesus to be the final sacrifice. But that word "dominion" has been thrown at me over and over. So after some word study regarding the word dominion and its translation I have come to the conclusion that no matter how you want to use the word dominion, God is also very clear that we are to care for the animals and His creation. How we raise, slaughter and bring meat to the table is horrendous and He would not be ok with it.

Jody Wielgosz I have gotten the argument that God gave permission to eat animals. But, like you said, the way that animals are treated and slaughtered today is, I feel, absolutely nothing that God ever thinks is ok. I didn’t originally go vegan because of the animals but instead for my health. But as I’ve learned more, the thought of how animals are treated is disgusting! He did create us as vegans and the garden provided every single thing Adam and Eve needed. Christians in my family know this but still use the fact that God eventually gave permission to eat animals. Also, in the desert they begged for meat and He decided to give them what they asked for and they ate so much it made them sick!

As a catholic this resonated with me, im slowly transitioning to a vegan diet not only for the love of animals but for the love of my catholic faith. Because i truly believe loving means everything and everyone, im glad im not alone out there. Because i would get a lot of eyebrow raises when i say im transitioning for religious purposes.

Makes sense to me! Veganism has been the most practical and least conflicting way to live my values everyday in this world.

This is great. I appreciate you doing this interview. I am also a Christian and a new Vegan. I think the Christian community in general needs to get educated as to the Biblical support for Veganism . I equally feel that the vegan community ( in general) would benefit from doing their own research i.e read the book of Luke or book of John so that they can discover for themselves who Jesus is and the love that Christianity should be conveying. Thanks again.

I went vegan years ago entirely because of ethical reasons, but only recently have I truly started to analyze the relationship between veganism and my faith. And honestly, it’s strengthened my relationship with God. I now know that God doesn’t encourage animal suffering and the environmental effects of the animal agriculture industry. And that is a huge relief. I’d had many doubts about God because of how many people have twisted His word in ways that made Him seem like a cruel, discriminatory God. But through careful consideration and the help of the Holy Spirit I’ve come to realize He is the exact opposite.

You say we are not in their positions, but we have been in their positions so we do understand as most of us grew up eating meat as well….😢 when we know better, we have to do better.

In the beginning, God gave them every seed-bearing plant for food. As long as the people followed the diet God gave the people, they flourished, while nations around them were diseased. When the people rebelled against God, they got the same diseases, just like the Bible says God told them they would. The best diet for us is the one God gave us. I have Fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue. I went high raw and am doing so much better. When I flounder a bit, my energy plummets!

@Laurah M How do you know when it's God telling what He thinks? Could it not just be your thoughts leaning towards what you want to believe? Shouldn't we go to the Bible to see what He actually said?

Genesis 9:3 - "Every moving thing that liveth shall be meat for you; even as the green herb have I given you all things." They rebelled against God but it had nothing to do with eating meat, unless they ate unclean meat as described in Leviticus. We can't pick and choose the scripture that fits our personal beliefs. Later in the New Testament there was no law to the Gentiles to differentiate between clean and unclean. And Peter was given the vision of all animals being clean. If you truly do 100% care about the environment, you should buy organic whenever you can, and boycott conventional products! Conventional farming pollutes the land, kills tons of animals, and harms plants. Plus, conventional farms are usually associated with a meat factory or a dairy factory -- it's a real conspiracy. Animal products were pushed on the public during the World Wars. Conventional farming is far from safe; it's unjust gain! Conventional farms may also be associated with a honey factory. To be fair, not all organic farms are that good, but any organic farm is already doing better than the leading conventional farm. People should know this. I thought it was funny that you should bring up "accidentally-vegan" products, because some products are also "accidentally-organic". The vegan cause should be associated with the organic production cause -- not out of "spite" against modern farm technology, but rather in favor of more intelligent technology.
