In this episode, Prof Grant Schofield speaks with clinical and research neurologist, Dr Matthew Phillips.
The pair discuss Matt's passion for exploring the potential feasibility, safety, and efficacy of 'metabolic' therapies, such as fasting and ketogenic diets in order to improve the quality of life for people with Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s and a variety of additional neurological disorders.
"Ultimately, I wish to help create a new field of Metabolic Neurology that emphasises applying metabolic strategies in healthcare so as to potentially heal many difficult disorders at their core, with the overarching goal being the improved health and enhanced nobility of humanity." - Dr Matt Phillips

Wonderful explanation of what happened to my neurological diseases, primarily “Parkinson’s” and “Bipolar Disorder”. Thank you Dr Phillips and Dr Palmer for showing me how to eliminate the negative symptoms of Parkinson’s and Bipolar while weening off all the drugs I was on for decades. Now at 77 years old, I’m healthier today than I’ve been for 60 years. I can honestly say I feel better today than I’ve felt since I was 18 and left the farm for college where I studied Biology. With my understanding of basic biology, Dr Fung, Dr Cywes, Dr Berry and more recently Dr Phillips and Dr Palmer helped me get healthy in mid 2019 and stay healthy ever sense. Thank you doctors for saving this old man’s life!

Congratulations Ron, Thank you for sharing your experience. I love reading of the success that people have achieved because it contributes to the psychology change required for one to dedicate one's time, energy, belief and focus to lifestyle as a protocol as Grant and Matthew discussed at the end on this pivotal discussion, for so many people looking for the keys to addressing root cause.

I am very grateful to Dr Matt Phillips for his progressive thinking. I was part of his clinical trial having been newly diagnosed with PD. I have now been intermittently fasting for the last 18 months. I exercise regularly. I feel healthier than I have for decades. Now 62, I am managing my PD symptoms well and have good quality of life. It's a privilege to follow Matt and his theories about metabolic health.

May the Resistance Continue! Thank you Grant and Matthew. Every word was an educational journey that just lit me up. Keep the brilliance shining for all of us as we journey forward. "It" has been a long time breaking the chains of the industrial drug complex. Thank you Grant and Matthew for sharing your truth, there is an entire community worldwide standing with you on these topics including an indiscriminate mass application (shall we say!). I look forward to more education AND the next LCDU Conference in October 2024.

What a great interview. The doctor is really on to something big. When you talked about a helthy terrain I could relate with all of it. My wife and I have been on a low carb high fat diet lifestyle and most everything negative in my body has reversed. I've been exposed to Covid and the flu and we haven't contracted either. Keto and LCHF is the biggest fear for the traditional medical community, big pharma, and food companies because it would put them out of business.

@@frjacobus go back and study the finding of LDL and small particle associated with high carb and sugar diets. The proof is walk around a Costco or Walmart or any street in a large city in the USA and see how obese and metabolically ill people are. It's getting worse each year on your diet.

Thank you for the forward thinking however talking about Metabolism needs to include Amino Acid screening which as a person with PKU is available to me but not to others. This needs to be more available to the greater community to highlight the benefits of understanding Metabolic. Just a few of my thoughts

I to do the holding of breath at certain points of regular longer trips. A better one to do it see how many steps you can take while holding your breath and not gasping for air after. Under 20 is bad, over 20 better, over 40 great!

Hello Dr. Mathew, happy to connect with you. I m from Canada 🇨🇦. Please share with me on how to start to reverse my PD symptoms diagnosed since 2019. I’m 59 years old. I’m starting the keto diet today and fast for 18 hours for 6 months. Any recommendations?

What do you mean by a five day fast? No food at all or one meal like in an intermittent fast? 7-2-23
@AnneAlready
@AnneAlready Год назад
A water fast. I think black coffee would be fine, and Dr Phillips mentions some salt is needed to feel good. You should build up to five days and it's always much easier to fast if you're already in a fat burning state (ie established on a ketogenic diet). It can be helpful to monitor blood sugar and ketones and if you're diabetic you should probably work with a coach or at least read Jason Fung's work based on his experience working with that patient population. I could not go 5 hours without eating initially. I worked up to 18 hour fasts (intermittent fasting) then I tried a a 24 hour fast and a week later I did 3 days. That was in 2019 and I've done monthly fasts since then of 3 - 7 days...and one 10 day fast just to prove I could. It gets easier and honestly I have just as much energy on a fasting day as I do on a non fasting day. (Sorry for the short novel in reply!)

Hi Silvana. Most of what we discussed is summarized in the paper here: www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC9116908/ I tried to make it easy to read, but inevitably that is very difficult given the scientific nature of hte article. hope that helps though, Matt.
