My Dad lives In Apache Junction so I have been fortunate to explore the Superstition Mountains! Such a gorgeous area and when I talked to him today he said the cactus flowers were vibrant. Stay safe and healthy. 😊
Heading to Buckskin Mountain State Park second week of May! First trip in a long time and first trip with F350! Can't wait! Arizona is absolutely beautiful. Thanks for sharing your adventure!
You bet Don! For us it was a bit more than that, though. The hikes, the Apache Trail, and the beauty of the Sonoran Desert made it worthy of a destination stop, too.
We are going there later this month and I was looking for info about the park and surrounding area. Thanks for the look around. We've camped with dogs a few times and I've just got to tell you that the line system you're standing by at the end of the video was hands down the best way we found to keep our pups secured in the campsite :)
Have a great trip, Amy! Yep, that tether line works great, although lately we've moved to a fence enclosure for when we're in campgrounds. While boondocking, we typically let Zoe run free.
Hi Marc, finally catching up on your Arizona series episodes. Surprised all these campgrounds were open during April. Our campgrounds in CO have been shutdown since mid march. They are finally opening up this week, and with memorial day reservations, I'm getting excited. I haven't made it to episode 150 yet, looks like your in AZ still.
Glad to have you back, Eric! We're not still in Arizona, but our videos are. Due to video editing and lead times our social media accounts on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram are much closer to real-time than our videos, and are sometimes instant. As far as I know most if not all state parks never closed in Arizona, I know that Lost Dutchman never did to campers and the rules posted right now are the same that were in effect during our visit.
One of our viewers attending this week's Premiere did so from this very campground. For better or worse, Lost Dutchman is hardly needing any further exploration; it's one of the most popular state parks in Arizona and one of the most difficult to get a campsite in.
We would've thought so, too. Perhaps COVID-19 made it easier to get one? At the time that we reserved a few days in advance there were two water/electric sites left, the rest of the park was booked.
Go with Black Diamond, that's what we use. www.amazon.com/dp/B00H58EHHC/?ref=exp_grandadventure_dp_vv_d They're on the high side but you truly get what you pay for.
Hi guys! Met you through the interview you did with Our Crazy RV Life! Great people and neighbors to us. You have a great intro and I would love to redo our someday. Lost Dutchman State Parks looks great and your narration is even better! I love how they separated the campsites in that park. Fantastic drone work, music, and editing skills! Impressive. What a beautiful place. We just retired in 12/2019 and have only been from Texas to Florida (where we have been pleasantry trapped in Thousand Trails because of recent events in the world. Nice to meet you!
Nice to meet you folks as well! Thank you very much for your kind words, they're sincerely appreciated. Wishing you well in these times and hopefully you'll be able to break free shortly.
Hiked Flatiron! It was incredible! Oh, the views from the top...stunning! Watched 2 helicopter rescues from the mountain late in the day. Crazy challenging trail!! Drove the Apache Trail and hiked at Canyon Lake...fabulous. Road was open all the way through back then
Yes Jody, I wish that I had the time to get to the top myself, but my work schedule precluded that. I was happy, though, to have had the time to get as far up into Siphon Draw as I did, it's a beautiful hike. Happy that we could bring you back there. Check out Tom Spurlock's drone video of the entire mountain: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-CXIZMrTGM38.html
This spectacular video makes me think of our annual trip to Scottsdale to visit my family. You brought it to us when we are not able to fly down. Thank you!
Really cool video of the place. I will be in phoenix for the NASCAR car race. Will have to stay there after the race since its only an hour drive from the track. Thanks Don. Just received your sticker
Thank you Jason! It's everything you said rather than drone-friendly; to comply with the rules we had to go back out to Apache Trail and fly over the park from there.
I have driven the dirt road from tortilla flats to Roosevelt dam. It's beautiful back behind the dam. The road than was scetchy! One very narrow bridge was probably where it washed out from all the rain. I hope they reopen.
We hope so, too. Right now, though, the state is undertaking no effort to make repairs. They claim that it's to allow the ground to stabilize, but I question whether or not the true motive is financial.
Funny story about the "wimp", Blake. After staring at that wash for 30 seconds and eventually backing out, the guy on the *motorcycle* went right through. 😆 It is a truly wonderful place that's worth checking out.
What a lovely adventure! Thanks for sharing and for providing the date filmed since we can't be there right now. Good to know what it currently looks like. Enjoyed.
Marc, I love that state park. The best of all worlds in that neck of the woods, as far as state parks go. Great video for this week. I also loved seeing the wildflowers. Gord
i used to live in apache junction.... we went riding up in those superstition mountains all the time. its very beautiful, never went into the campgrounds. but went to the first water trailhead alot. also went to the goldfield ghost town. ride the mine ride its cool. used to go to the bar there and tie my horse to the hitching rack and give her sips of my coffee lol. they have an old west shootout show too and a train ride. or at least they used to.
Longtime viewer. Much needed and much appreciated diversion from 14-hour nights as a hospital RN! You've inspired me to actually go several places, Silverton, CO. for instance. Question: Our trucks are about the same physical size, mine a 2500HD 4x4 is slightly taller and maybe wider; ground clearance would be higher, but for its 4:10 axles and the pumkin is large, so I don't want to do rocks. But do you think I should try any of the easiest trails out of Silverton?
First off Monty, thanks for the long hours and difficult conditions that you and your colleagues are dealing with right now. We all appreciate everything that you're doing. As for Silverton, you probably could do the easier ones. The areas of concern are wheelbase length (tight turns), and your angles -- approach, departure and breakover. I'd grab a good hardcopy trail directory or consult with one of the outfitters in town. Realize, too, that there a number of outfitters in town that rent jeeps, and the prices didn't seem bad to us (~$160/day).
I think I may have tent camped at Lost Dutchman in January '75. I thought I remembered more cottonwoods in the campground so it may have been a different campground but definitely Tonto Forest and Superstition mtns.
Thanks so much. Your videos are so beautiful. You do a fantastic job of filming and editing/sound effects. Well done. I miss places I haven't even gone to! Miss AZ! Thumbs Up #26
Thanks so much Jon! We're thrilled that you're enjoying our videos. It's good, though, to always leave a few places unvisited, that way you always have something to look forward to seeing.
Another Great video Marc. You have inspired me to relook my travel plans to Arizona vs heading north to Oregon after restrictions cool down. We enjoy kayaking and exploring towns and were wondering if you are encountering closed shops and restaurants alike during these times. Keep up the good work, Nice photo bomb, Thanks
Thank you Mike! Many shops are indeed closed on our swing through Arizona right now, whereas virtually all restaurants have been open for takeout. As for Oregon vs. Arizona, we love both but to compare the two would be unfair, it's apples vs. oranges. For us the decision would hinge upon the time of year. If it's in the March/April time frame, or late September/October, we'd take advantage of that timing and hit up Arizona. However, if it's between those two periods in the heat of the summer, we'd definitely opt for Oregon. Just our $0.02.
Thank you Jimmy! We had considered Lake Roosevelt on this swing through Arizona, but in the end diverted with a last-minute change in plans. That just gives us a reason to return to central AZ.
Great video as always Marc, Thanks. I had an idea for a video for you. You do such a wonderful job of explaining what we are seeing. How about a video about the night skies. Out your way I know you have some of the darkest skies and most beautiful views of stars. Just a thought. Take Care
Lucky you! We've been near there a couple times (Gold Canyon) ...Meanwhile here in CO the campgrounds are closed for the foreseeable future - Stay Safe Marc - Oh, and great video
I am fortunate to have the Supes in view out the back door. Siphon Draw Trail is one of the most challenging hikes in the Valley. Advice: Wear leather gloves! You chose a glorious season to visit and got some excellent drone footage. Did you get a chance to see the Shadow Lion that appears on the mountain about the third week of March?
Great video! I live it there. Did you go to the old Goldmine town or in a Dollyboat ride! The Fry's Grocery Store near there is a great place to shop. Thank you for sharing!
Thank you! Yes, she harasses us some of the time, but most times that there's no guest around she's much more mellow than what you've witnessed. She views guests as new suckers to throw the ball.
The campground is open now as well, Robert. As far as we know it never closed. Verizon signal was solid but occasionally slower than we would have preferred.
No. The campground has 135 sites and three group camping areas: 68 sites with electric (50/30/20 amp service) and water and the remainder non-hookup sites on paved roads for tents or RVs. Every site has a picnic table and a fire pit with an adjustable grill gate. There are no size restrictions on RVs.
