really liked your thoughts about it...I've watched this now 3 times...and for me it gets better every time because you notice more and more details that make this such a masterpiece......because every time you see new themes popping up...loneliness, depression, isolation, social injustice, bullying, marriage, love, friendship, death, regret, what it means to be happy, what it means to be successful... the twists and turns of the plot only served the real purpose: to propel everyone forward on their journeys for some sort of healing...The office shenanigans were the perfect catalyst for the real drama... the device of her listening to his life made her loneliness so heartbreaking...and even though they were both depressed...he had all these people around him that would be ready to support him...but she only had him and even that was tenuous...so it was so beautiful when they all brought her into the group... How everything works together in this series, script, direction, acting, camera, design, OST...to me it's not just a tv series somehow...it feels more like art that reaches parts in you nothing else reaches. 👍😎

I've never cried so hard because of a movie but this made me sooooo sad! But in a good way! As if my tears washed my soul...❤️❤️❤️

To me, this is the best drama I’ve ever seen, not just KDrama, but any drama. One of the things I noticed in this drama was how DH’s marriage was not black and white. His wife cheated on him, but Dong Hoon’s elder brother and mother understood, not that they condoned it, but that Dong Hoon was not altogether blameless. There was just a terrible imbalance in their marriage. How they communicated affection and their measures of relationship and life success were completely different and disjoint. I feel that Dong Hoon’s wife appreciated Ji An for opening that window for her, and allowed her to see that although her husband did seem to prioritize his friends and family over her, he did not completely abandon her, it’s just she wasn’t able to see how he was expressing his affection for her. Of course by then the damage was done. And the show followed that up perfectly, as there wasn’t a magical reconciliation or explosive blame-fest. It was just two hurt people trying to move forward, which I thought was an excellent reinforcement of the main theme and characters.

I could easily list at least a dozen scenes in the drama that I would consider as my favorites, but I’d emphasize one where I don’t see it commonly included in other people’s list. In ep14 when Ji An is about to be on the run, she dropped by the CEO’s place first to make sure they are on the same page should they be caught and forced to spill the beans. In the conversation, she threatened the CEO by volunteering that she has killed in the past and won’t be afraid to do it again if needed. “I will kill everyone that messes with Park Dong Hoon.” Those words scream LOVE much louder than any utterances of “I love you” can ever express. Such a badass our heroine can be!

Has anyone noticed that his younger brother tells him that next time he encounters a temptation, he can only hesitate for 3 seconds. Then ji-an texts him asking him to buy her dinner, and he sits in the subway for 3 seconds and comes out fast before the doors close. This drama is a real masterpiece 💖

The problem with My Mister is, After you watch it ... it's such a high bar ... every other drama seems like a cartoon. What this drama does that many gloss over is ... Self reflection and Solidarity. True in depth solidarity not just the family blood kind but an extension ... what Koreans call Jeong.

I really like the scene where Lee Jian walks the first time with the neighbors where she also mentioned, she can't wait to be on their age because she would have less problems. Then all of them stopped walking and looked at her. It felt so heartwarming.

Great review! Really glad you enjoyed "My Mister" A few quick questions and comments if I may. 1. His said he was better suited for the "Joeson Era", when the wife would move in with her husband's family. 2. I really wish you would had have a chance to speak to the meeting where Ji An spoke about Park Toon and his impact on her and her love for the company and how that affected the owner of the company. 3. Loved the fact that the show demonstrated that not all men are lascivious. Park Toon took care of Ji An and had no desire to "ravish her. 4. The IU song when Park Toon and Ji An departed for the last time was great. 5 What was the deal with the bartender and the Buddhist priest? 6. Finally the contrast in American driven youth culture and Ji An's longing for the comfort of a settled life of being middle aged.

For me, this drama makes me more emotional than Moon Lovers. My lifetime favorite drama which doesn't get boring even after 3 tries. Their neighborhood is probably the best one I saw in a drama or even IRL. The binding between them all is on another level. It's seriously flawless for me. The storyline, acting, production, OSTs......just everything.

As a middle aged Korean guy just like donghoon, every time I watched this drama, I appreciated two things mostly : One is that I am a Korean so I can understand whole lines and dialogues in hidden and Metaphorical meanings of all totally. Second is great truth that we have a such adorable and precious national treasure, Lee ji eun aka IU for our generations.

Hey! I cried even watching this video wherein the scenes were not even fully shown with proper audio & bg score. So you can imagine how much I cried when I binged watched it. Definitely one of my fav shows of all times - it is not easy to show the ordinary life with so much depth and impact without losing the interest of viewers/pace of the show. You very rightly said that it's not all-sad sad but very complex sad kind of a show, leaving a feeling of solace & warmth. This show is like a big warm hug at times when I myself don't know that I need some support & someone's presence, when things seem alright but are not really alright. I don't know if I'm making sense but that what it means to me. And yes I also believe somewhere that this show is not everybody. There were definitely a lot of heart warming & touching scenes - well that's why we cried so much but the one that made me sob for quite a long time & I particularly remember this is when ahjussi is alone in his house and he is struggling to put his mind to something so as to not burst into tears but eventually he does & omggg even before he started crying, I already did. Because this is towards the very end and by now, you know all that he has been through and you are already feeling so sad for him & just seeing him struggle holding his tears back, holding his anger, sadness, all emotions pent-up in him, I just couldn't help but cry. Gosh, I can go on and on about this show - it's soo good!! From the love 3 brothers have for each other to the insecurities ahjussi's wife faces before she cheats on him, the insecurities Joon Hyeong had from this school days and the whole life of Lee Gwang, they showed complexities in every character & that's how reality is - so much full of varied emotions, at times we ourselves don't know. Just love the show - a tearjerker with a big warm hug :)

One of my favorite scenes was in ep 15 when Ji An was about to uninstall the app, because it was a lot more significant than I realized. The first time Ji An wanted to help Donghoon was back in episode 5, when after the fuss during their team dinner, Donghoon was walking near the train tracks. He was pacing back and forth and his footsteps seemed uneasy; with deep breaths he kept looking left and right of the train tracks, communicating to the viewers that he was considering ending his life. And when Donghoon slipped, Ji An heard him and she went running over to his location... the first time she felt the need to help a pitiful man who helped her, but was going down in a downward spiral himself. But by the time she arrived, Donghoon struggled to muster the strength to get up and walk forward, realizing that he couldn't die then and there. But even still, his limbs and head were in a dangling posture. But in ep 15, as Ji An was about to uninstall the app, she begins to hear Donghoon again by the train tracks. This time, his steps have a direction: forward. They were sounds of firm and steady steps moving straight. And as he kept moving forward to the train tracks, he didn't once look to the left or right. He had his head held up, and nothing was limp in his limbs as he kept walking. And as he walks past the train tracks, you hear the train come in. The last sounds that she hears through the app are the sounds of the train passing by, while at the same time the firm steps of Donghoon moving forward with direction and firmness. He's not going to go downward anymore nor considering the idea of ending his life. She uninstalls the app, knowing that Donghoon, though pitiful, is okay. Though she'll miss his voice, getting to know his thoughts, and the sound of his footsteps through the app, she knows that it's time to stop listening through the app and trust that Donghoon will live a happy life, moving forward with his firm steps and head held up high Yeah, My Mister is my favorite drama even though I've only watched 30+. I thought the rewatch value would stale but it was better for me! lol

Oh my goodness my heart... 😭😭😭 brb crying all over again... that’s such a beautiful observation. And yes, even I would’ve hesitated and debated on whether or not I should delete the app-it provided such an intimate connection and insight into the life of her favorite person that to cut it off would make her feel so... alone? I’m sure he made her feel less lonely by just living, without even knowing it.
@josephkim1454
@josephkim1454 3 года назад
@@lydversus Yeah definitely would've hesitated in her position too... The one thing that helped her move forward was him (which is beautifully ironic in and of itself). But that just emphasizes what you said in your brief review-lending a hand and being kind toward one another is much more powerful than we realize. Honestly, so many great scenes and moments in this show. I hope you'll do a full review of this one day haha

Finished this the other day and was waiting for your finale reaction! 😭💕 If I could describe My Mister in one word it would be HUMANITY. This drama was painfully beautiful. 🥺 I started watching it expecting Donghoon to ‘save’ Jian, but didn’t know that it was going to be the other way around. I have two remarkable scenes in my head! 1. Donghoon in the cinema, who has found out that Jian has been listening to him. When he said “Lee Jian. Lee Jian. Call me.” I HAD GOOSEBUMPS ALL OVER MY BODY. 2. When Donghoon was running. 😭✨ what is it with male characters running for the girl that gets me all the time? Also, while watching the last episode, I keep looking in their eyes. Especially Donghoon’s. It’s a mixture of pride, love, gratitude and sadness. 😭 Especially when he finally saw her in episode 15, when they hugged, when she said fighting and when he looked back for the last time at the end. It’s always the eyes. Also, I saw a comment before. “He walks faster whenever he feels himself falling for her.” 😅

I describe this as a human drama too when I talk about it. It really is the best way to explain it. It doesn't necessarily explain everything before you watch it but after watching when you see it described that way it just clicks and is like yes that's a perfect explanation. This is my absolute favorite drama out of any dramas anywhere and will recommend it to everyone for a long time.

I finally finished watching the drama and liked it very much. Everyone in it is great but the two main actors are definitely the stars of the drama. I must say the role of Lee Ji An is definitely not one that I would have expected someone like IU to be great at but she certainly showed a different side of her in this drama. The two Lees played the subtleties of the two characters very well. I've always thought of IU as the Korean Taylor Swift as an artist but she's definitely a better actress than Miss Americana.

I'm so glad My Mister is still being appreciated :')) i know it's really popular in South Korea, but it didn't exactly click with mainstream media. It did get so much recognition in the film industry tho, including international artists, producers, and musicians :')) it's such a quiet thing tho? i do remember it was barely promoted too, and with the little that they had, it was never flashy or "in-your-face" kind of everywhere. ahhhh IU always has these dramas where I get hurt all the time :'(( i wish for more people to know about this, because it's such a gem, such a good perspective into humanity and emotions and how our mind works in certain situations. it's just so good; it's definitely heavy, but it's an amazing masterpiece :'))) seeing your review made me feel alive hahaha i have to go through this again, but maybe when my emotions are stable enough to withstand this.

One of the reasons I love this drama is the dialogue, almost every conversation between Ji an and Ahjushi is meaningful and feels so real somehow, also the relationship that they share feels so special, its familial yet its not...I didn't know a relationship like this could exists and that I would like it this much lol. Okay here I list a summary of my other thoughts. 1. You're right. The story would mean more for a little bit more mature, life experienced, audience. 2. Neighborhood cameraderie. Old fashioned but absolutely beautiful 3. Brotherhood love and fillial piety 4. Middle child syndrome. First child always try hard but fails. Youngest child is always the emotional, hot headed one. The middle child is the quiet one that bottles all his emotions 5. Dong Hoon's reaction to discovering his wife's infidelity was heartbreakingly realistic 6. Ji An and the monk's ex girlfriend describing themselves as errm a thousand years old. May be you can share us some cultural context to this. 7. The big advice from his monk friend that changed Dong Hoon 8. Kwon Nara's surprisingly good acting 9. Difficulty of retired career men in accepting that they have to start again from the bottom. 10. Quote: "when you know someone, it doesn't matter what they do".

In Buddhism, people go through cycles of birth, life, and death. At one point Jian told DH that she must have gone through 500 cycles of life, and assumming that she lived roughly 60 years in each life she must be 30,000 years old altogether. She is using Buddhist idea to imply that her life experience is so much more for her age. Later in Junghee's bar when Nara asked Jian about her age presumming that Jian is younger than herself, Jian replied '30,000 years old' making Nara confused, but Junghee immediately understood what Jian meant and said she was 40,000 years of age.

The feels came back while watching your reaction! You're right, the sadness is complexa and it left me wanting to see more and to see them succeed together. The impact of these main characters makes you want to do good things to other people. They became my favorite main leads in all kdrama I've watched. Love the character development especially UI's. Dong-Hoon is full of flaws but you'll admire his perspective and outlook in life. I begun to like his personality when Ji-an started to discover his life and became drawn to him. Love how she started protecting him and him caring for her and her grandma. These are the scenes that also had impact on me: 1. When Ji-an and Dong-Hoon talked and she explained why she hit their co-worker and then he said that's okay as long as nobody knows... 2. When he went to the loan shark's office and discovered Ji-an murdered a person. 3. The whole slipper scene when he demanded that he wants the them back. 4. All relationships are precious scene with her grandma. The OSTs are also great that amplifies the emotions. Props to the people behind this masterpiece! Just the best overall! It's one of the best kdramas (if not the best tbh) I've seen so far but sadly I also think that not everyone will appreciate it.

I feel like it was a little weird to see your episode 1 reaction and then the end of the episode 16 reaction in a span of two days (a little bit of a disconnect, but still liked the video). It's been a while since I've watched this drama but I remember really liking it as well. One of the things I really liked was the brothers relationship and dynamics (especially coming from a family of 3 boys as well) and it really did feel relatable of the dynamics of responsibility and family. Also I never understood the symbolism of the monk's and the bartenders relationship and how it pertained to the overarching themes. Lastly, I know in North American television it seems pretty normal but apparently there was some controversy with the beating scene in the first few episodes. I'll have to rewatch this drama again.

Aghhh I was debating on including episodes in between but the focus of the marathon was to highlight IU’s various dramas not one in particular so I ended up doing the first and last episode of each! Totally agreed! Loved the dynamic with the brothers and just the community surrounding them I was confused by that couple too but I’d infer they had a deep loving relationship, and was also incredibly smart and successful, but he gave it all up... which is a huge contrast to our ahjusshi who can’t seem to be able to give anything up for the sake of, like you said, responsibility to his entire family

Agree Lyd - only way to describe this is a masterpiece! This show was devastatingly beautiful at portraying such a wide range of emotion - sadness, longing, friendship, family. I also don't know where to begin! It was so unusual to watch a drama where often the most powerful statements are unsaid (the part when the gang walked Ji-An home and the whole funeral scene moved me to floods of tears) but what is said, is so monumental (e.g. Ji-An's 'thank you' on the steps of her house). I just finished it so my head is all over the place but for me, it was such an uplifting drama, showing the pain and struggle of a coming-of-age story of two people in different stages of their lives coming to terms with their humanity and how to survive (and thrive) in a cruel, harsh world. Enough ENG Lit 101, I'm off for a good cry now lol Thanks so much for covering this - was on my 'To Watch' list for a while and so glad that you posted a react so I could watch along with you.

Really liked your deeper analysis of the drama and this is definitely in my top 5. I recommended this to everyone that I knew that started watching kdrama during quarantine. A lot of reviews I've read like to analyze the relationships between the characters, but for me it was about the message of finding happiness and showing through Park Dong Hoon what a lot of people lack today in this world...empathy. Some of my favorite scenes include: 1. He finds out about Ji An's childhood history from her caretaker and the reason why she's in neverending debt and then goes and fights Gwang Il. Ji An is listening to the recording and as soon as she hears Gwang Il tell him she killed his dad she stops running and seems to think it's all over now that he knows and she has to go fugitive again. Instead she hears that he would have killed him too and she breaks down, perhaps finally knowing that someone can empathize with her. 2. The panel interview for Park Dong Hoon's promotion while Ji An's listening after going fugitive. The opposition of course has to bring up his decision to hire Ji An based on her qualifications and grilling him on why he didn't fire her after knowing she killed someone. He counters that with why does it matter if the courts already acquitted her as acting in self defense and why are they digging so hard into her past and putting her on trial again. The most powerful quote here is when Park Dong Hoon says "Are companies run by machines? They're run by people." A lot of corporations today need to look at their core values and ask themselves this question. 3. The scene where Park Dong Hoon finds Ji An at her caretakers shed after she runs away before he can find her resulting in her being hit by a car and refusing to go to the hospital. This got me to cry, haven't cried to anything in over a decade. 4. The morgue scene with Ji An and her grandma really hit home too. I feel like there are tons of people that can relate to either character in some sort of way and after finishing it, I know I definitely can.

@@lydversus The story telling and drama is so good I must have watched it at least 4x. What really amazed me was IU's professionalism. I saw an interview of her where the director was so impressed with her depressed acting role not realizing that IU was actually sick and unhealthy during filming. I love this drama it made me realize so many things about life. It's not overly done it's so sudtle that it feels so real. It teaches kindness, love , forgiveness and all the sad realities of life that we all go through. I like it's open ending . I mean it was a happy ending, but their conversation at end and that hand shake could lead to something ( it's not normal but in reality it happens ) or they could just be friends. Who knows? I love dramas ending that way coz it doesn't just end , it makes you think of possibilities.

I had two takeaways from My Mister that topped all the other takeaways. One was the way they unflinchingly portrayed the underside of life in S. Korea. It applies to every society everywhere, honestly. Very, very well done. Humanity is a cruel, viscous breed, normally. All human history teaches that. This show brings that all too common truth to the fore, we cannot avoid acknowledging it. The other was that, despite our human tendency to cruelty, our lack of compassion one for another, these things like love, concern, generosity, helpfulness, self-sacrifice really do exist...and sometimes we get to see them up close and personal. The Greeks had three words for love: agape, eros, and philos. This show demonstrated agape perfectly in the relationship between Our Hero and Our Heroine. Philos was as well, in the relationship between the brothers. And the show, just as a TV series was done so masterfully well it's unforgettable. If you haven't yet, Please review Mr. Sunshine. My all time #1 series, from anywhere! IMHO, taking nothing away from My Mister, it's better. Please?

Hi Lyd, firstly, thank you for your reactions. I have been watching asian dramas for a long time now, it is always insightful to have another perspective, particularly from someone like you that understands the language, culture, and is so articulate :) My take away from My Mister was the evolution of them as individuals. The power of having a solid foundation should never be underestimated, as the 'safety net' it provides can be both restrictive and rewarding. I think they all needed to take a long hard look in the mirror and make those tough decisions on their own, whilst knowing that the community was always there to keep them 'honest' and be generally non-judgemental. Looking forward to your future reactions, have an amazing 2021, best of luck with your channel

Thank YOU for watching!! And yes! That foundation is more important than we give credit to and is usually taken for granted by those who’ve never been without safety nets! I think even solely understanding can provide that for someone (i.e. Kwang Il doing the right thing after listening to those audio clips and feeling both seen and understood by Ji-an and Dong Hoon!)

Just watched this movie because I randomly picked it. I wanted to watch IU to see how she is as an actress. I discovered to my glee an actress and an actor whom nobody can surpass in their acting skills. Superb performance. I need to ask a question though. When Ahjussi was crying alone at the end with all the pent up feelings, could his tears also cover his upright principles of love , family life, fidelity and yet having to deny himself the temptation of reciprocating a young girl's deep affection for him? With my heart in my mouth towards the end I was wondering how it would end. I knew it would not be possible to end with anything more than just pure love for Jian because in an earlier episode where he asked his wife how she could have an affair and cheat on him when she's the mother of their son? So likewise, he's also a father and he will not do anything foolish to initiate a divorce and thus jeopardising a break up in his family. This resulted in him having to bear the weight of all the sadness of betrayal, the loneliness that engulfs him, the need to exercise forgiveness and the restrain of getting comfort from Jian , the very name spells comfort ..v ( I found my own answer to my question as I analysed the story. Do you all agree?) Although I see it as he becoming a victim of all that he stood for, it all works out well . And so good triumphs over evil at the end. Beautiful show. Affected me so much and the OST made me replay all the scenes with such melancholy. An overhang. It made all the other dramas pale in comparison. Both the leading actors tugging at my heart. Kudos.

Feels more like in a segue way seamlessly moving from episode to the next. My favorite part is when IU is remembering her grandmother talking how precious her relationship is with PDH. That all relationships are amazing and precious. Absolutely beautiful. Just one of many great themes from a great series!

ㄴ"My Mister(My uncle)," I saw a lot of dramatic turning point that separates the presence of IU and Lee, Ji - Eun clearly and all actors in (Lee Sun-kyun, Lee Jia, old and new, sonsuk, Go Doo-shim, jeongukhwan, Song dawn janggiyong, Young Min Kim, Kwon countries, Wu, etc. and shining joyeonjin _Actually, it is the best Korean drama with all the main roles) shining. Personally, I affirm that Lee Ji-eun is the only singer and actor who is as great as Lee Jung-hyun of "Alice in Faithful Country". He is one of the few actors who act with his whole body. I was very difficult, but wasn't it the adversity to give birth to a masterpiece? Of course, I respect the consistent concentration of all the writers, directors, scripts, supporting actors, extras, and staff. The Old Miss Diary, and the works of Hae-young Oh's author, Hae-young Park, were a The work that PD Kim Won-suk showed the perfection of the decoration for the United States! Even the OST is the best, there are a lot of quotes about life (life), it's a Studio Dragon work, so you can watch it on Netflix.

It was not surprising that the wife of the main character in 'My Mister' had an affair, since her husband at the start of the drama was portrayed as a depressed team-manager with all the charisma of a wet-sponge. He drinks every evening with his useless brothers in a seedy bar, arriving home late, drunk and uncommunactive. He shows zero interest in his relationship and seems devoid of enthusiasm, or joy. He weirdly develops an unlikely so-called friendship with a young temporary female co-worker who is also deeply depressed, bullied and extremely manipulative and devious. The drama highlights the hierarchical and bullying culture present in Korean corporate organisations and offers little respite from its bleak and dystopian view of life, love, and relationships. The several sub-plots involving the main character's brothers show them to be a couple of immature losers who drink themseles into a stupor most nights and who naturally fail in almost every endeavour. The main character's response to his wife's infidelity reveals him to be lacking in courage, self-belief and dignity. At the conclusion. His wife clears off to the USA where their never seen son resides and the main character ends up meeting once again the young female employee with whom he's developed some kind of slow-burn friendship over the course of the drama's sixteen episodes. Altogether, the drama was far too long and could have been shortened considerably if the characters had left out the tediously long pauses in their depressing conversations and the many irrelevant sub-plots. Worth a watch though, especially if you're in the mood for yet another long-winded K Drama with no satisfactory conclusion.
