This episode is a scriptural reading and continues our exploration of Abhinavagupta's "Tantrasāra," focusing on Chapter Four, entitled “Illumination of the Empowered Method (śākta-upāya)”. The text is a magnificent description of the śākta-upāyas, the contemplative process that can refine one’s understanding of reality, ultimately leading to the experiential realization of one's true nature. The ‘empowered’ methods through which ignorance is dissolved are discernment (sat-tarka), teachings from an authentic tradition (sad-āgama), and guidance from a teacher (sad-guru).
You can read Chapter Fours (Part One) in three distinct blogposts:

IMPORTANT NOTE: Abhinavagupta’s argument here must be read in its wider context lest we misunderstand him. Clearly, he does believe that yogic practices can indeed support and foster the discerning insight that leads to liberation, for he teaches yogic practices in the very next chapter. But he suggests that those yogic practices must be conjoined with at least a provisional understanding of how they illustrate the nature of Reality.
Additionally, in the Tantrāloka, he allows that even when yogic practice does not foster sat-tarka (accurate discernment), it still might be helpful to remove impediments on the path, such as doubt and fear. In Tantrāloka verse 4.98, he writes: “On the other hand, in our view, since [Consciousness] clearly consists of everything, including prāṇa, mind, and body, even practice which remains on those levels can successfully remove impediments [to liberation], just as one who wishes to leap must first overcome fear of falling.”

I totally understand what you are saying regarding sensory pleasures like the smell of a rose or witnessing a beautiful sunset. Yes, those are divine experiences because they bring us a step closer to divinity, to happiness. As Yoga is not the denial of desire or happiness but the fulfillment there of. The problem with Tantra or with our physical sensory experiences is that habituation quickly sets in with repeated stimulation and with it the diminishing returns of pleasure. Thus a wandering mind develops along with a loss of steadfastness. It doesn’t matter which sensory stimulation we are talking about, they are not sustainable as a repeated source of pleasure. This is a factual reality. Additionally, using one’s own sound reasoning, discernment and contemplation is not yoga. And it is not our conceptual ego of ourselves which keeps us bounded to this material existence. It is our sensory perceptions which binds and traps us firmly to this very real material conceptualization. Each morning you wake up in the same body but a day older. Rich or poor there is no escape from this corporeal existence. That is except through one path. The human conscious mind alone is capable of such a feat, to actually experience the un-manifested nature of reality which underpins this manifest corporeal reality.

I think I’m still welcome to comment on this subject as long as it is back up by scripture. The Buddha said it was his own sensory perception which was deceiving him all along. Lord Krishna said the slayer doing the slaying and the person being slayed upon are both deceived. It is not our ego that is the source of Maya.
