On this episode of The Late Night Vision Show, Hans and Jason compare the specs and real world hunting abilities of the Sightmark Wraith HD models and the Wraith 4K Max. These two affordable scopes are by far the most popular and best selling night vision scopes to ever hit the market. While the HD’s and 4K Max are all in the Wraith family, there are major differences and strong points for each of the three models. On this episode we discuss these differences and offer up our opinion on which model might suit your hunting style best.

*** Why Hunt Hogs? ***
Our journey into wild/feral hog hunting started like many others living in rural communities. We didn't start hog hunting for fun or sport... we did it because we had to. You see, hogs cause millions of dollars of damage and destruction each year in rural communities and our situation was no different. Hogs were destroying our land and that our of friends and family. The vast majority of hunting stories that you hear about on this channel are hogs, boars and sows, taken from family land... this problem is personal for us...
__________________________________________________
*** Why Hunt Coyotes and Predators? ***
Coyotes and Predators, similar to hogs, cause financial stress for many families in rural communities. Coyotes kill livestock, plain and simple. Ranchers have battled coyotes killing cattle since the early days of ranching and it costs them dearly. Cattle ranching is a business, the cows aren't pets, every time they lose a calf to a coyote those families lose a paycheck. Cattle ranchers hate coyotes just as much as Farmers hate hogs! We hunt coyotes to protect the livelihood of our friends and neighbors that depend on their cattle business to feed their family...

Good show again, you guys hit on a lot of good points with the differences and are spot on. I will agree on the HD being very easy to use and to setup, the 4K does have a lot more options to choose from in the menu, and can seem overwhelming at first, but after taking some time and playing with the controls it is not that difficult. I have had the 4X HD since shortly after they were released and have really enjoyed it. I mainly use it for nighttime coyote hunting, bought the 2X HD and it works well for daytime woodchuck hunting. Just got the 4K MAX maybe 6 weeks ago. And I will say the picture image is amazing, not that the HD is bad but the 4K is clearer. A couple things I have noticed between the HD and the 4K while using at night, is if you zoom the HD it can get grainy/ pixelated really quick compared to daytime mode and the 4K will let you zoom more before getting grainy/pixelated. I believe that is partly because the 4K seems to gather more light or is more sensitive to the IR light along with having better resolution. I will agree with the statement about budget when choosing between the HD and 4K. I really like the 4X HD and can honestly say, you can not go wrong if you choose the HD model along with the base magnification that suits your style. One last comment about the mounts. The American Defense mount is very nice and seems to be holding zero with no issues. I was lucky enough to have won one thanks to Outdoor Legacy , The Late Night Vision Show and of course American Defense. Sorry for being long winded Jason.

On the 2x HD the specs show the mildot reticle as the long dashes as 1 mil but to make it correct you have to figure your distances as a 5x magnification regular scope . To make it the same as a 10x magnification you have to make each long dash as 2 mil spacing . It seems they changed this on the 4x specs on the sfp setting of the reticles they list it as the long dashes as 2 mil spacing . So with the 4k 2x scope when its set on 2x the mildot reticle is a 2 mil spacing .

Great info. I just ordered an AMG TM15 thermal monocular and I'm considering pairing it with the Sightmark HD 2x for night time hog hunting in Louisiana. My shots will likely be 150 yards max with 7.62x39. Thick woods and swamps here but I'm baiting them into some fields that border the wooded areas.

How do like the tm15? How far can u see and identify?
@wagstag89
@wagstag89 2 года назад
@@raymonshores4257 I love it. It was better than expected. I would say for a being able to make a quick ID between a deer and hog, 200-250 yards but it's useable at much farther distances. I watched my neighbor walk across one of his fields one night and I could clearly see him at 600 yards or so. Even at those longer ranges you'll know whether it's a small animal or something larger worth taking a look at but you'll probably need to get closer that 250 yard range or so to make a positive ID. Where I hunt the TM15 is perfect and I've located, stalked, and shot 11 hogs so far

I might give you guys a call sometime. But I know im gonna buy the wraith HD. But what light would work best for me/how do I decide will do best for me. Im progressing more into coyote hunting. Im from the midwest. Im using a brand new custom AR chambered in 223/5.56. And maybe the furthest shot id take at night in 200 yards. But I can spot em from 800-900 yards with normal led green light in the few spots i hunt. Id like to be able to see them come in from that distance if possible with my ir light/wraith.

With this type of digital night vision how does a full moon affect how far you can see? Will it provide enough light to see farther than an ir illuminator?
@outdoorlegacy
@outdoorlegacy 3 года назад
These scopes don’t draw much ambient night time light. It might help some on a really bright moon night but you’ll still want a good IR with it.

I"m sorry gents but why not just bluetooth the thing and forget wifi? Where I hunt in Australia, there is no wifi.
@TheLateNightVisionShow
@TheLateNightVisionShow Год назад
No night vision or thermal scope manufacturer uses Bluetooth. They use wifi but I think the confusion is that it’s just using wifi from the scope to your phone as a connection technology. There is no internet access on the wifi, it’s just a connection method between the two devices. You can be in the middle of the Sarah desert and it still works. It’s using the wifi technology like Bluetooth because very large video files transfer much easier and quicker over wifi. So you don’t need wifi where you’re hunting. It’s confusing to many. I’d suggest talking to your scope dealer and they will be able to show you how it works.

I've heard the Wraith gets grainy with age exposure to daytime light use. Is there a way to prevent this? Is the graininess repairable?
@TheLateNightVisionShow
@TheLateNightVisionShow 3 года назад
I believe you’ve been given some incorrect information. The Wraith uses what is essentially a high end digital camera. The Wraith image will not degrade over time any more than you’d expect any digital camera or video camera or even your cell phone camera to degrade. It sounds like someone might have been confused and somehow mixed up the Wraith with traditional tube based night vision (Gen 1, 2 or 3). Traditional NV does get darker over long periods of time but even this takes many years to happen.
