Ep. 17 - Dungeons & Dragons: Do YOU Remember YOUR First Time Playing the Game? (A True Story!!) 

This story never gets old, and “girlfriend money” always makes me chuckle. I wish my first D&D experience was this cool. For my first time, my brother scheduled a game for his friends and finally invited me to play with the cool older kids on the condition I convert and paint character models for himself and his then-girlfriend. I scammed him out of a whole box of Warhammer Lizardmen and an X-Acto saw because I “needed” the bits to build his girlfriend’s model and had had my eye on that saw for a while. I was a senior in college and he lived an hour away in a different city. I built some damn good models, including one for my own character, and drove down for the game. I was just rolling a basic human warrior for simplicity’s sake, and I named him Causticus and decided he’d be a sassy, sarcastic jerk. (You know, because of the sick burns.) About 5 minutes in, my brother, who had been drinking, was so drunk that he literally flipped the table while hollering about “grass men” or something, some anime thing I think. His girlfriend put on a pot of coffee and my brother went to make a call on the porcelain phone, but in the end (shortly thereafter), Causticus never even made it out of the tavern. Hell, he never even got to order a drink himself. Haven’t played since. I love this (Voryst’s) story though because it’s just about perfect; it’s what everyone’s first time should be like. Good stuff Tom!

My first ttrpg experience was fully homebrewed using sidekicks as our player characters and main stat sheets as giant robots, everything flavored using esper genesis to a super robot style campaign not to mention my character had major plot points and ended with her taking final blow on the bbeg
