Botswana was never fully taken over or ruled by another country as a colony. In the 1800s, it came under the protection of the British Empire but managed to maintain its own leaders and control. It stayed independent and in the 1960s, Botswana became fully free from British rule and became its own country called the Republic of Botswana.
