The Tom Paris story arc meant so much to me as a young adult. To see a story about someone that had fallen short of expectations be able to become a valued and cherished person really helped me through some tough times. It was so great to hear that it was the actors input that helped that story arc along. Love it.
I always found the flawed characters more interesting/relatable than the prototypical “perfect” Starfleet officers….they also serve as the audience self inserts.
20+ years ago I saw Roxann Dawson and Robert duncan McNeill at a creation convention when they did a 2 person play together called the Blue Room in the evening at the convention - it was outstanding. Met him several times. Very laid back, personable and fun to be around.
I love Dom, do not get me wrong. BUT. I think Connor is a better interviewer. He listens patiently and asks good questions. He doesn't interject too often or compare the guest's experience to his own. The tone of this show was just ... different. Really enjoyed it. Thanks, guys, for another stellar Shuttlepod Show!
Your Dominic point is spot on. Clearly, no hate towards him but we watch these episodes to hear the back stories of the guests. Dominic's many interjections just kills the flow, quite a bit. So many times I get frustrated while watching the episodes.
Dom is good in that he does a lot of research and knows quite a bit about the guest, but yeah, his style is kinda obnoxious. He is constantly interrupting, cutting the guest short when they are answering, or even injecting himself into the discussion sometimes which is just the worst..
So nice hearing more of Robbie McNeill's backstory. Great questions from our excellent hosts too. Thanks for keeping these delightful conversations going @The Shuttlepod Show !
Tom Paris seemed like the most realistic character on the show. Everybody could relate to him in my opinion. Robert Duncan McNeil is an amazing person, a fantastic director and underrated actor. Hope to meet him someday.
I just finished watching the episode "Alice" featuring the character Tom Paris, and I must say Robert did a fantastic job playing that role. When I want to get away for awhile, taking a ride with Voyager in the Delta Quadrant is the ticket, always takes me away, even still to the day. Thank you Robert and the entire cast and production team. I'm very grateful for all the work you put into that show, it's a timeless masterpiece, the entire series!
Has anyone else realized that one of the reasons why they enjoyed this episode was because Robert was able to tell his story without a thousand interjections by Dominic?
1) Tom Paris and B'elanna Torres still top tier romance in my mind. 2)TY Robert, you and Garrett were hugely important to me as a kid, your friendship was formative for me.
I was a P/Ter from Alter Ego on. I have a list for rewatching eps just to watch their relationship develop, from season one through seven. LOL It made me coin my favorite relationship trope, Enemies to Friends to Lovers. Love them so much.
I am sure this has been said before but the “Shuttlepod Show” is such a perfect blend of sci-fi show, a Trek fan show, and the actors/directors (and all other jobs) studio. Hearing their start, the theatre, tv and film experiences is just so enthralling. The associations with so many film and TV shows (really enjoyed Chuck). Again - thank you!
Very memorable time today with Robbie! Much love for The Delta Flyers, too! This was fun and informative - I enjoy getting the behind-the-scenes dives between Connor and Robert with how their professional careers were similar or different and the people they know in common. Thanks @ShuttlePodShow ! ❤💛💙🤓🖖🏾
That was such a satisfyingly awesome episode, he seems like such a genuinely nice guy. He has all of the hallmark signs of being a truly excellent leader, I bet the folks around him love working with him. I didn’t want this one to end, I’m absolutely going to have to find your show. And Robbie, write a book, seriously, you have some real wisdom knocking around in there that others could learn from. Your path has had turns, dips and dives that I think a ton of us can relate to, how you handled those are examples for others. Chuck, I mean, come on, that little show had some real heart, I really dug it. Didn’t discover it until the pandemic lockdowns, but it’ll always be one that helped get me through that period. From the bottom of my heart, thanks for that one. Thanks from us fans for coming on the show, would love to see you back if you can.
Terrific interview!!!! I loved listening to RDM's evolution as an actor, director and producer. He is fantastic as all 3! Resident Alien is one of our favorite shows! Thank you for the great interviews! I love listening to you guys!
As someone that was an actor in a former life I truly appreciate and love when you guys get into the nitty gritty about the business and the terrible emotional yo-yo of feast and famine as an actor!❤
Erika asked about when he did some directing for Dawson's Creek and Robbie told a story about a scene he felt James V needed to cry in, and the crew said 'You'll never do it, he doesn't cry' but it was achieved@@jameswolfstar
I love hearing all the shop talk and learning things I don't know about what it is like to act on a TV show and what you all actually do and what other people are there like camera people and lighting and makeup ECT.
Fantastic show! Phenomenal information. Love that your content never is restricted by time. RDM is very interesting. I identified with his feelings growing up. 1 of my favorite characters from Voyager. Great career he has had. Your show rocks. Please never let it end. BTW, Erica my father was born and raised in your state. Amazing how I am connected to you and Conner in some way. lol
Great episode. Always enjoy hearing their real life acting career stories. He was at his lowest and almost ready to quit industry before landing Voyager. And really used that role to pursue his directing and producing passion. Good stuff!
I just started watching Voyager again in the last week. I was never a big fan of the show due to the premise but I did watch it as often as I could. But my work and school life kept me from seeing the entire series. As a result, I missed a lot of key episodes that addressed the very things I thought the show had ignored. I’m only on season 2 right now but I’m definitely seeing the show in a new light. And as strange as it sounds I woke up today wondering when RDM would be on your show. Crazy!!
Thank you so much for another great episode! It was a shame that Dom wasn't there (although I hope he enjoyed the concert!), but it was great to see Mark in his stead. Thank you for creating a vibe on your show that makes us/me feel like we're just hanging out right along with you and are part of the conversation. Whether your guests are in front of the camera or behind in the ST universe, it has been fascinating to learn about their life journeys and all of the aspects of creating these shows/movies. An extra A+ to RDM for being an REM fan, too! Thank you again!
Wash mention in the RDM episode...my life is now complete. (Sorry to hear he isn't doing well, I hope he improves!) I was wondering when you'd be having him on as a guest! Tom is my favourite Voyager character and I love the Delta Flyers too, so to say I was excited for this episode was an understatement. Going into it I didn't know much about his life prior to Trek, so I came out of this episode having learnt alot more! Honestly, tons of respect for him for deciding to leave school (a prestigious one at that) and take the soap opera job to make ends meet, that must have been a extremely hard choice to make, so I'm glad everything turned out alright in the end. I definitely related to him talking about exploring other career prospects, landing a job in my field finally happened for me this year, after alot of debating on different paths and shedding some tears, I'm happy I stuck with it and was able to land my dream job. Hearing about his current line of work in directing/producing was super interesting, I feel like alot of actors who try to make that transition aren't super successful or just do it as one time thing with mixed results, it's great he was able to make that switch and absolutely love what he does. I'm happy he's been able to see Voyager with fresh eyes after all these years and talk openly about his time on the show and his character. While I love Tom and his growth is interesting to watch, I'm glad he still brings up how early Tom's characterization was not super likeable, and that he can a look at his character in more than one light so to speak. All in all, another great episode of The Pod, one I thoroughly enjoyed! (I only wish I'd sent in a question about what it was like for him working on Quantum Leap!) Happy Shuttlepod Sunday everyone! 😊🖖🍃💚
I love the paintings that are made for the show. If I appeared my painting would be of me and the Premier League Trophy and discuss that with Dominic as Leicester City were the holders of that time,
Great show! “The First Duty” is one of the best ST episodes of all time imo and RDM was great in it. Mark, I’m impressed by your interviewing skills and your Star Trek knowledge. You’re very relaxed but also funny. Connor has comedic skill as well. Thanks for a great episode! Also, loved your instant knowledge about the Enterprise episode directed by McNeill “The Breach” - rescue of the Denobulan scientists.
Loved this episode. I didn’t know this podcast exists! Liking and subscribing. I don’t think I’ve ever seen such an excellent interview with RDM (not that I’ve seen many). I love the retrospective of all his acting/directing/producing history. I would love him to reprise Tom Paris again. I know he’s ’past it’ but that character had such a great way of interacting with the rest of the crew and other characters and RDM sold it. Again, excellent insights! Thanks.
Tnx for having Rob McNeill on, was an interesting conversation. So many actors seem to make that leap into producing/directing I've noticed, to the extent that I started kinda thinking of it as some sort of early retirement plan. The work involved in Producing sounds pretty nuts though.
I wonder which actor got in his face when he ws directing an episode of Enterprise? I assume it was the first one he directed, Cold Front, as he previously said there had been tension on the set.
Thanks for this episode. The 1st trivia question asked about 'Past Tense Parts 1 & 2' in reference to Tom Paris, but those are DS9 episodes. I presume 'Future's End Parts 1 & 2' was intended. Great pod episode!
Between work and family and the holiday, today was the first time I could get around to watching this. I came late to this show. I don't even recall what chain of episodes and shows and podcasts led me to the first of the Shuttlepod interviews, but I recall it was the Gary Graham episode and I was hooked. I loved both the history of Trek each episode unveiled, and even more the insight into the livelihoods involved. It's been an amazing look into a world I have no part of save to enjoy it. All that said, is a very long prologue to saying this is my favorite episode you've done so far. I could go on about what moved me about it but I'm sure that days of comments above me have done so. I will say that I'm particularly taken with the way he talks about his opportunities and how he moved with them towards the life he wanted for his loved ones, and was more about how he faced his challenges with humility, and less bragging about his accomplishments.
94 was a tough year for me as well. I had left LA and was doing some work in NYC. Half wondering how close we were to running into each other now. Happy to hear it all worked out.
I know it sounds crazy but, I can't wait for the day I'm on here as a fellow trek actor and director. So many of you have inspired and got me through rough and crazy times. Keep an eye out. I'm on my way. Live Long and Prosper.
Gotta start off by saying I like Tom Paris on voyager and after listening to the delta flyers before the strike, left me with some questions about Robbie McNeill and his mindset and thoughts on star trek and listening to this pod answered so much, saying that. I've grown to like him more as a person and who he portrays on the star trek series. I'm going to look for more of his content, thank you for all your works.
Great episode, not everyone is cool enough to listen to for two hours. When you finally get Marina in the seat, you have GOT to tell her I'm the one who beat the drum from day one to get her for a show. And prepare your funny bones🤣
Loved him on TNG & Voyager. He's one heck of a director. Great podast. Robert I liked you in Masters Of The Universe too. It was a fun picture. Without which we would not have Bill Conti wonderful film score.
@@ShuttlepodShow we would LOVE to help your Show by directing you on how to embrace Crypto and secure the Wealth of your Community by claiming some Web3 Tech. Completely Pro Bono consultation if you have 30min to communicate by phone or vid conference. We'd be honored to help. Kindest regards.
I watched All my children just at that time and era. I remember Duncan as little Charlie. Voyager tied that in as well with Kate Mulgrew in Ryans Hope. Voyager was a Hit for me.
Thanks guys, great interview! The highlight for me was 1:13:17! :D What an insane piece of trivia! Thanks as always to Erica for gracing these videos with her loveliness and beauty. As for Dom, I've complained in the past about him needing to be quieter, but I truly did miss him in this episode. So he just needs to find the right balance! I know you're on hiatus, but if you return I've got a little feedback… the trivia quiz always bugs me. I find the rules, buzzers, and sounds really confusing and haphazard and I'm never sure what's going on. This is a humble suggestion, but I would change the game as follows… 1. ONLY the guest plays. All questions are for the guest - with the spotlight on the guest. It's all about them. 2. AFTER the guest has answered, Erica may ask the boys/Mark if they agree (before the answer is revealed) - but that's just for fun, they're not actually competing. 3. Correct answers win the guest points, with the goal being to score high. 4. If you ask every guest the exact same number of questions (eg 10), then you can keep a leaderboard of highest-scoring guests. 5. Start with a few REALLY easy questions which the guest will definitely get. Try to keep the first 5 questions closely connected to the guest's character. 6. Unless you know they're a big Trek fan, avoid questions about other Trek series they weren't in. 7. For the last few questions, avoid multiple choice answers - this prevents high scoring by chance. 8. The scoring should gradually increase, with later/harder questions being worth more. The ten questions could be worth the following points: 10, 15, 20, 35, 70, 150, 300, 600, 800, 1000. (To allow a maximum score of 3,000 points.) 9. In the edit, put their score in the corner of the screen. 10. After the final question, end the game by offering 25 bonus points for every alien race in Trek they can name. Thanks for listening, Lee B. 🙂
The support never dies I still watch enterprise , voyager , tng , DS9 , TOS and the animated 1973 series . They are all running hard on Netflix and it’s all I watch !
@@thelifeofcollinrs6030 yes I need to pick up the other streaming services so I can watch them 😅 I need to watch Picard and strange new worlds . Strange new worlds is the Christopher pike story right ?
I was lucky enough to get a pic with Robbie & Garrett (sp?) quite a few years back when Robbie finally came to CalgaryExpo. Garrett has been at CalgaryExpo a lot, which is great. I was extremely happy to be sandwiched between the two of them. Garrett commented on my *leather* jacket & I said it was an homage to Zulu*s snazzy jacket in a recent StarTrek TOS movie. He liked the way I said *homage* - the French way. Great pic too. Wish I had had the time then to meet Robbie individually. I had spoken to Garret a few times before, especially one longer convo when he was showcasing the Captain*s chair in the Vulcan booth. ❤😊❤
What a fantastic episode. It seems that every single guest on the Shuttlepod Show is talented and has so many stories to tell. Is this a Star Trek thing?
I'd love to see you guys interview Alan Tudyk, who is well known by everyone for playing Wash in Firefly, but is also connected to the Trek universe through Robbie, who is directing him on Resident Alien at the moment.
Didn't realize he directed that ENT spelunking episode, always a hoot to see Trip and Malcolm getting frazzled and escaping from mayhem-- even if it involves bed bugs. Love RDM's directing style and message of "bringing out the best" in others. Excellent podcast!
Looooooove Tom, the Delta Flyers and of course Shuttlepod. Another fabulous interview and love this format. Quick note for CHRIS MOSCATIELLO - the sound isn't quite working to the point where I had to come back and listen to this in parts. Not sure if it's the new room or the mic set up. I'm hearing voices in and out as if the speaker (especially Connor's voice). Am getting a bit of room echo on and off as if he is talking from the other side of the room. Sorry not technical. Robbie's sound is fine.
Thanks! Robert I’ve watched so many shows directed by you. It was great to learn a little about your life and influences. I chose to go into teaching but a part of me will always have wanted to exploring being an actor-and I would still love to direct. It’s good to know that Resident Alien will continue. I loved the dogs at Planet if the Apes in “Chuck.” Everyone at our local Best Buy loved it. Grazie.
Great show guys, Robbie surly is Star Trek Royalty... Shame to hear he didn't enjoy his time on the show so much.. The chemistry with the cast is one of the great things about voyager, and one of the highlights of seeing them together at cons.. One day you'll have to get someone in to really dish the dirt on the whole Kate Mulgrew, Jerry Ryan thing.... But can I give a huge shout out to Erica, who as well as keeps the conversations on point, also asks some really great questions..
Hey Shuttlepod Show, , Robert McNeil ( Paris ) brings up a good point with production of podcast , , , Do the eyes of TRIP and MALCOLM ever read ANY of our heartfelt comments ???
Robbie was complimenting Connor for not needing notes to discuss his life. So I’m not sure if I understand this comment/question. We all read every comment. Did Robbie ask that? I don’t think he did. Please clarify. Haha. Thanks.
@@ShuttlepodShow he was breifly discussing differences and similarities with his own show and Traineer's Shuttlepod Show , he pointed out staff that "handles" traffic (correspondence ) within the shows , , ,👁️👁️
No- we made a joke about having a research department (which is not true, it was a joke) but we never said anything about “staff handling traffic” - I wish we had staff. Staff would let me sleep more and consider taking a day off from town to time. As it is, if we don’t do it - it ain’t getting done.
@@mjcartier don't the mean Trekkers you work for ever give you a vacation ?? If they won't then go over their heads to Captain Riker & Admiral Picard 🖖🤣🖖
Another terrific episode/chat. At 1h 35m, talk of "Resident Alien" gives me hope for series 3 of that show! I finally got to binge watch series 1 & 2 over the past few months on the South American river streaming service and I adore the show!
if you love Queen...look for Marc Martel. He was handpicked by Brian May and Roger Taylor for their Queen tribute tour. He did additional vocals for the movie starring Rami Malik. 😊
Robert McNeill voicing Nick Lacarno from TNG show, was a hoot on Lower Decks S2 final episode. Also on Voyager, I really liked his stories with Belana, and also his racing the Delta Flyer stories. Where can I get a Tom Paris collector plate like Boimler has? Just kidding. :) Robert is a great actor!
It’s so weird to see him as a real person. I just see him as Tom Paris! Even though I remember him in The Masters of the Universe movie with Courtney Cox! I saw that movie at the drive in when it came out when I was 5!
