Lily Taurau (Ngāpuhi) reckons she never really felt “Māori enough” to call herself that while hosting Mai FM’s critically acclaimed breakfast radio show. With strong whakapapa tying her to the small Northland settlements of Pakanae and Mangakahia, she is one of the vast number of Māori who struggle daily with their Māori identity. Urbanisation and other societal pressures have created a generation who feel “too white to be Māori, and too brown to be Pākehā.” So where do they fit in? This is Lily’s story.
