Lily Taurau (Ngāpuhi) reckons she never really felt “Māori enough” to call herself that while hosting Mai FM’s critically acclaimed breakfast radio show. With strong whakapapa tying her to the small Northland settlements of Pakanae and Mangakahia, she is one of the vast number of Māori who struggle daily with their Māori identity. Urbanisation and other societal pressures have created a generation who feel “too white to be Māori, and too brown to be Pākehā.” So where do they fit in? This is Lily’s story. This is The Taumata Kōrero.

Love the korero that you produce. This one in particular where Lily mentions people doing Haka overseas. Personally when I first went to London, I would always bust out a Haka. For attention, mostly drunk or under the influence. After a few times doing it, I refused to bust out a Haka for the sake of it and I always refused to do it while under the influence, I realised how wrong I was. I'm with Lily on this stating "how wrong it is" its more of a respectful value I believe to our indigenous culture. I think educating the people of Aotearoa about our cultural values needs to be addressed at a young age which would be a step in the right direction. As I said, loving the korero that you are producing and keep it up.
