Howdy! fellow adventurers. In this episode of The Great Loop on a Shanty Boat, Wavey and I find the only working gas pump between Hoppies and Paducah. Kind of sounds like the making of a country song;) We finally get off the Mississippi River and start beating up against the Ohio. Make sure you have plenty of fuel, because your consumption will roughly double.

For others that are watching, there is a great anchorage just south of Cape Girardeau - it is called the Castor River Diversion Canal or the Little Diversion Canal. If your boat is small enough, you can go up the canal under the RR bridge and to the highway bridge where there is a boat ramp and a truck stop on the south side of the canal. The canal is a favorite Looper stop.

Sentimental video for sure! You had an amazing run down the Upper Mississippi! Those beautiful autumn days coming down the colorful forested cliffs of Wisconsin and Iowa were something special. Hidden gem parts of America in my book. 9:59--Brenton, I've tried, googling up about every Upper Mississippi towboat sinking and absolutely nothing, not one hint of an article about it, not one picture. Hopefully somebody with local knowledge of that area can chime in. Even a professional towboat captain like Captain Kyle of the youtube channel Mark Twained would be most welcomed to provide the background to that mystery wreck. The only thing I could add is that I remember years ago on my old CG river tender reading a book called the "Inland River Guide". In it, there were color drawings of each commercial and government towboat's stack, a good visual identifier for any mariner to use when spotting a vessel underway. Each company's stack coloring was different to the other company. Having said that, that stack sure looks like the colors for an Army Corps of Engineer's boat. The bottom superstructure up to the pilothouse appears to be that classic ACOE tan/yellow they use on their boats. Can't explain the pilothouse maroon color unless it's primer, with the yellow top coat flaked away from years in the elements. The mystery....continues! Quite the milestone event for you and Wavey, entering the Ohio! All the best and safe traveling!

@texasbk1333
@texasbk1333 7 месяцев назад
🐶 🤔 I’m planning for my own Shanty Boat & have a small dog & in my mind… I’m envisioning a drop down perforated “ramp” covered in artificial grass that my dog would use the restroom on. Urination would flow through into the water & defecation be raked off into the water with a mini rake, then rinse the plank/ramp with a small pail 🪣 of river water. I envision the drop down being mounted with hinges & when not in use would lie flat on the Shanty’s exterior wall. I also envision what I’d use around the “ramp/plank” to prevent a dog from falling off into the water. ~ Like us, As our canine friends age, their ability to “hold it” will become shorter & shorter. 😅

I was a little bit surprised that you couldn't find a gas station in a town the size of Cairo so I checked. It appears that you're correct. I did find a 66 station about 2-1/5 miles south of Cairo across the bridge into Missouri. I'd bet that gas prices & taxes may be lower there but didn't see any place to access from the river and not an appealing option for schlepping gas cans back to the boat. not sure if it's still in operation but that's an old power plant in the beginning of this video . ;-) They would use the river water for the steam.

It's been underfunded for a long time. A lock worker did tell me that it's changed recently. The Demopolis lock and dam blew open just days after we passed through.

Hi Mike, we are doing to entire loop and then some. Going to try to pull up in front of my home on the Ontonagon river on Lake Superior late May/early June. We'll pick our open water days carefully. Stay tuned...;) and thanks for finding us

A while back I encouraged you to trust your anchor alarm. have you been using it? Is your trust increasing. Also, I am curious about fuel consumption. What is your typical speed over water, engine rpm and average fuel burn rate?
@backwatersandbackroads
@backwatersandbackroads 6 месяцев назад
Howdy Jeff, I found about 4 feet of heavy chain on a beach a couple weeks ago. I added it to my Danforth, it has been holding beautifully. That's what it needed, and I needed to start relaxing at night. My plow anchor has chain, but that's my secondary anchor and not as heavy. We do around 5 mph at 2200-2500 RPMs and burn about a gallon an hour. I think we're getting a little better than 5 miles to the gallon. It's been close to 7....especially when going down current like the Mississippi
@MrJeffDemme
@MrJeffDemme 6 месяцев назад
@backwatersandbackroads Thanks for the quick response 👍. Chain really helps. I have a 44' motorsailer and recently converted to all chain. 350' of 3/8" chain and a 30kg plow anchor. It really holds. But I still ALWAYS set my anchor alarm. Previously you said you don't really trust the alarm. I was wondering if you were trying it?
@backwatersandbackroads
@backwatersandbackroads 6 месяцев назад
@MrJeffDemme I haven't been using it. I guess I still don't trust it ;) with 4 foot of chain, I can hardly retrieve the anchor from the mud by hand.

I do everything you see here on my phone. A galaxy s20 with a phone editing app. A lot of RU-vidrs download from various cameras onto a laptop and edit there. I keep it easy and limit myself to the phone. The app is free, but there's a "pro version" that's cheap. If I happen to be around wifi when uploading, I use it, but most of the time I'm not. It usually takes a few hours to upload a 20-30 minute video. Then there's all the backend work of a video that folks don't see. It's a job ;)
