I like your review of Garmin Dash Cam 57 very much. The way you presented it is down to earth and straightforward and I really appreciate that, because it helps me narrowing my decision down to Garmin 57, and not 67W.
Thank you for this video. My hubby was pooh-poohing the idea of a dash cam when we hit the road next month. I think your video has convinced him we NEED one!
Trust me Gwen, as a claims professional it eliminates any ambiguity, it gets rid of the "he said/she said" present in any accident. I thank my lucky stars when a driver involved in a claim I'm handling has a dash cam! Even when it's the other guy trying to prove his point, I want to know the truth and use it to confront the other driver. We just moved our Garmin 57 to our new Ford F-350 today, using a similar auto-dimming mirror power adapter from the same company designed to fit the Ford. Those adapters make installations so simple and ridiculously clean!
Wow,. Thanks so so so much for this review!! I travel from Jacksonville to Tallhassee and Tallahassee up to Ocilla and Tifton Georgia for my horse shows so at least once a month I am long range driving my GNLQ or small trailer OR without.. I will definitely purchase one!! Happy Trails
Excellent review. Very well done without rambling on and on about unnecessary info. Helped me to decide on the 57 over the Mini 2 because of the somewhat better resolution.
I was inspired by your video. We bought the Garmin, but the plug to tap into the mirror power was out of stock for the RAM. So I bought the OBD plug and was able to successfully hide the wiring. But the other thing I got out of your video was awareness of a power source at the mirror. I used PosiTaps to splice into the mirror power to run the monitor for the Furrion backup camera. Now I have a 6" pigtail tucked behind the mirror that powers the monitor that is suction cupped to the mirror. The perfect location for a backup monitor. I'm trying to minimize the rats nest of wires created by having multiple accessories. Thanks for sharing this video Marc.
That's a wonderful idea with the Furrion monitor, Frank! Our Haloview unfortunately uses a cigarette lighter plug for power, which isn't the USB-type that can be removed to use a USB power out instead. And the monitor end of that cable is non-standard, so I'm reluctant to lop off the lighter plug. I'll have to see if I can figure a non-destructive method to replace that cable.
@@GrandAdventure I keep old chargers and plugs, "just in case". And I just happened to have a cord that had the right plug on it for the monitor. Like you, I didn't want to chop up the original 12v cigarette lighter plug cord. And the PosiTaps make it so I didn't have to cut any wiring on the truck.
I added one last year after having an older couple on a trike pull out and never accelerated to the 65 mph speed limit. I had to lock up the truck and trailer brakes and came with in 3 or 4 feet of hitting them. I just installed one in the rear window of my crew cab mainly so I can see the hitch. It’s wireless and has WiFi that connects to my iPhone. The trucking company I drove for has had them for years.
I like the idea of having the alert if your vehicle gets hit or something. I have had my cars ran over by tall 4x4s, 2 in my work parking lot and one in the Walmart parking lot. The 2 at my work parking lot reported it but the guy in the green dodge pickup is still at large. There are distinct markings on the pickup, and I am watching for him. I hope you have been taking advantage of all the fresh snow!
I bought a Haloview rear camera for the trailer based on your advice, I didn't get a dashcam for money reasons but we absolutely intend to! Thanks, for another great video!
You had me worried when I first saw this video pop up. I thought you folks got into an accident. Great video! Great idea. We have a built in one to our car, but do not have one on our truck. Thanks for taking all the guess work out of this. Ram 👍🏼👍🏽
Had similar system on my work truck. Only problem was the camera taping me as well as I drove. I did fix it with some carefully placed duct tape.. Thanks Ingemar !!
LOL! One of my clients has cameras in the cab, too. The facial expression when, say, you hydroplane across 6 lanes of I-95 and jackknife into the jersey barrier is priceless. 😄
Yes I understand how helpful a dash cam can be. Your video made me get this one we won at the AIM Rally in Los Vegas out and look at it closer. The GO RV 2000 claims to be Full HD at 1296p. Looked it up on Amazon and it is $297.69 So after I get a SD card I will try it out. We did pretty good at that rally won the dash cam and a small weber gas grill.
I have been researching dash cams for awhile now. I am to the point my head is spinning. After watching your video I am going to go with the Garmin 57. It was on my short list and your review helped me to make my choice. It looks to everything I need and more. Thanks for the informative video.
Whoa...your timing is impeccable! We're deciding on which dash cam to get and narrowed it down to two choices...one of which is the Garmin 57. Thanks to you the decision was made easier! Thanks Marc!
I have had a dash cams on my car for over 5 years. I have recorded some unbelievable footage over the years. I am a big garmin fan and own many garmin products but not their dash cam. I think it is important to use an sd card designed for dash cam use, constant overwriting of files. Ordinary sd cards will fail in dash cams. We are upgrading to a 4k 3 cam setup soon, finalizing the choices. Great video marc, I love your take from the insurance industry. Larry
Thanks for the great video. Your advice is always good, and this is no exception. Thanks for convincing me which, and what camera to buy! Happy trails!
Good one Marc. I like the features on that Garmin. I just bought one that records inside the RV as well as out in front of the RV. The inside sensor has IR too for night time. It does required power all the time, but the camera doesn't run all the time. It has motion sensing to turn on the inside camera.
Kevin, this was the third one we tried, but as they say the third time's the charm. The first two couldn't hold a candle to the Garmin. Plus using it this way is completely brainless and automated.
??? I told my insurance company that I had a dash cam and they didn't care nor give me a discount. It's good to have one anyways because it could save you a ticket or git you that insurance claim.
Most insurers aren't progressive enough to offer a discount (my employer is an exception). However, the ability to defeat the liar who tries to blame you for an accident is far more valuable.
I do not have a garmin camera but both my truck and rv have a dashcam. #1 for obvious reasons but #2 and I CAN NOT PARLAY THIS ENOUGH... as a super duper cheap option to a front mounted off road trail camera. I have a mirror style dashcam that comes with a backup camera so I mount my backup cameras on front of my truck so that when I go off roading instead of spending $1500 on offroad camera setup I only pay $40-120 for the camera setup. On my RV I have RV backup camera but mirror cam is connected to backup camera that came with it and I can see everything behind my motorhome while driving and its always on... like a rearview mirror.
A dashcam is a witness for insurance and police. I have an auto-vox mirror dash cam with backup camera because I drive a truck with camper, so it is hard to see behind. And is is also record8ng. So when the idiot is speeding and goes around, more evidence for insurance.
Well done Marc. We have Yi 2.7K (Xiaoyi) Dash Cams in all our vehicles including the RV but I'm not sure if they are still available so I appreciate your feedback on models with extra features. See you at Q22!
Thanks for this video. Is it possible to toggle off the driver alerts, speed recording, and gps? My car has all the driver alert stuff and I am thinking I may not necessarily want my speed recorded.
You're most welcome. I don't know if you can toggle off the GPS, but you can indeed turn off the driver alerts. Our truck also has them, and I seldom even notice when the camera alerts as I have the audio alerts turned off.
We always go with max resolution no matter what camera we're using, Otis, be it our mirrorless or a dash cam. You can always reduce resolution without any loss of quality, whereas that's not the case the other way around.
Thanks for the prompt to get one of these and your research on this model. Does it require any other mount than what’s included? And what power source if my truck mirror has no power port? Thanks, Marc!
Our pleasure Randy. No other mount is needed. There's a small magnetic disk (rather strong) that adheres to your windshield, then the arm of the camera simply mates to that magnet. Easy on, easy off, and they actually provide two of those disks (and more may be purchased separately, so you can move it between vehicles). The box includes a super long cable that you could run behind the headliner, then down inside the A-pillar to either a USB port, a cigarette lighter or the OBD2 port (the latter by using an optional constant power adapter). Everything other than the optional constant power adapter is in the box.
Thanks for the video. Since I live in the South, my concern is always how do these cameras hold up to the summer heat? I had a cheaper camera (I know, you get what you pay for) that was toast within two weeks in June.
Thanks for watching, Kid! I suspect that the Garmin is built ruggedly for temps; it's been surviving quite well here with single digit temps in a Utah winter.
Good review, I've been contemplating one myself. What's an alternate method of powering the cam if the rearview doesn't have electrical power to plug into?
Thanks John! The camera actually comes boxed with a very long power cord that you could easily tuck behind the headliner and run down behind the trim on the A-pillar to a waiting USB port, a cigarette lighter receptacle, your OBD2 port, or the fuse block.
Been thinking of getting one. We have had a few nit wits come at us head on while passing on mountain roads. I just slow down and give them room to clear the semi they are trying to pass. Even going up Logan pass at Glacier someone was trying to pass us on a blind corner LOL.
No, and no. It requires the power from the towing connection to operate. You'd need to go to great length to steal the cameras on the RV, so much so that it never even crossed our minds.
Actually Marc, that's a wonderful compliment acknowledging your professional polish! BTW I just bought the Garmin RV 1090 and I'm doubling back on your video and expect to add the Garmin 57 as well. Many thanks for sharing - Michael and Grace😎
