.22 ammo options abound - each with a specific purpose. Mark, Ryan, and Jim dive into the long and short of this fascinating, functional, and fun round. From the typical .22 LR plinker, to 60-grain Sniper Subsonic, and even bird shot, they dissect (a couple rounds literally) this incredibly versatile and practical cartridge.

Two things here. That deer was shot at a long distance for the 22 stinger. I shoot deer all the time here in North Carolina with 22lr 40-55 grain solids. It is leagal here and standing broadside, right behind the shoulder, the bullet tumbles. Does more damage through the lunges than you could imagine and exits the other side at 50 yards. A hollow point at that distance will expand but won't penetrate deep enough to reliably kill deer. Second point is the slower bullets absolutely puts the smack on squirrel and rabbit. The full velocity solid bullets zip through so fast they don't cause much truma and the hollow points tear up to much meat. The CBs and the CCI Quiet dump all their energy into the critter and it will flip a squirrel right over backwards! I've lost squirrel with full velocity stuff because they will run and hide before they die. With the CBs and quite they are usually dead right there.

If you would like to do a show on .22 smoothbores let me know. We had patterned the different variations of "chokes" (there were a few variations of backboring) years ago including the patterning out of a rifled barrel. My family has one of the largest known collections of smoothbores and accessories (clays, throwers, etc). Almost every model and variation produced, even salesman samples.

Also, another cool gun for y’all to throw in the mix for this conversation in regards to the 22 LR shot is a very hard to find Mossberg Targo Model 42 TR. Very cool little single shot bolt action…. Thing. It had rifle sights, but the whole length of the barrel was a smooth bore. But it had an outer threaded muzzle and it came with two ends that were roughly 6” long… one was a smooth bore extension with a choked end on it, and the other end was a short section of RIFLED barrel. So you could shoot either the 22LR shot with no issue, or toss on the rifled barrel end and now you’re shooting 22LR regular bullet projectiles. Very VERY nifty little set up. Friend of mine had one way back in the day, and I was amazed at how accurate it actually was with regular ammo with just that little section of 6” rifled barrel screwed on the end. Anyway…. More neat info for the topic!!!

22 long is an lr case with a 29gr projectile. Before 22lr there was just 22 short n long both pushing a 29gr bullet. Then after that came the long rifle which was just a long with a heavier bullet, typically 40gr. If you have an old .22 revolver that says .22short/long and you try to put long rifles in it they will stick out of the cylinder, because the typically heavier bullet itself will make it too long for the cylinder.

With all the .22lr long range popularity, can we do a video on the right glass for a long range .22 rifle given the extreme drops and drift that can be involved +300yd???
@wsbill14224
@wsbill14224 Год назад
.22lr ammo isn't capable of much accuracy beyond 100 yards as the bullet loses too much energy. 150 yards is pushing it. At 200 yards the bullets drop over 3 feet and have maybe half their energy left so there's no point in spending big money on a scope for a .22. I have a cheap K-Mart scope and I can hit empty 12 gauge casings at 50 yds.
@scotteger6271
@scotteger6271 Год назад
@@wsbill14224 absolutely incorrect…there are guys pushing these rounds past 300 yards with insane accuracy. The thing is you have to be focused on the right ammo. Listen to the video again where they start talking about staying sub-sonic from the start so the projectile loses far less velocity and stability from the trans-sonic switch. There are great deals to be had if you shop around. A friend of mine just sent me a deal he found on a Viper PST Gen 2 with exposed turrets and excellent glass for a little over $600. Put that on a CZ 22LR in a chassis and you’d have one heck of an accurate 22 setup for long range plinking.
@wsbill14224
@wsbill14224 Год назад
@@scotteger6271 I'm glad they're having so much fun because that's what it's all about but you and I have different ideas about what insane accuracy means. Any significant wind will blow 22lr rounds all over the place at 300 yards and there's almost no energy left. The charts will tell you that there's no need to argue the point. I would say 22lr is accurate at 50 yards, somewhat accurate at 100, and dicey after that. We have different ideas about accuracy and we were never into shooting paper we liked to shoot things so some energy is needed on impact.

A very enjoyabke eposode! A few comments: 1) I think the reason most of the bullets have such a rounded ogive is to keeo them stable in the slow twist tates. 2) I think another significant advantage of the copper-washed bullets in the "tictical" ammo is that if you drop it in the dirt, there is no lube for the dirt to stick to. 3) With regard to using standard-velocity ammo for ELR, go look at youtube channel "Mard and Sam after work". They comprehensively prove high-velocity ammo is better. 4) Can we have a handgun division for Moskeet? Should be pretty easy to make smooth-bore uppers for your dad's Mark 1 target model! 😁

.22s that appear to be plain lead have a clear lubricant on them, usually a wax-like substance, that reduces the amount of lead fouling.. They tend to pickup dirt and other contaminants when carried loose in a pocket or pouch. Copper plating like copper alloy cases act as lubricants, reducing the amount of lead fouling without attracting dirt.

32:00 There's a great video by "Mark and Sam After Work", a couple that do some amazing precision and ELR shooting, that actually completely disproves that subsonic ammo is more accurate. They tested several supersonic and subsonic loads at a bunch of distances, including close enough for the supersonic rounds to stay such and far enough that the supersonic rounds spent more time travelling subsonic than supersonic. The end result was that supersonic ammo shoots noticably flatter than subsonic, and that's it; there was no difference in group size between the two types.

I'd love to hear more about that BB gun dragon fly story. I've never heard anyone else claim to have done that. One time at my grandpa's cabin I sat on the pier with his old BB gun for hours trying to lead dragonflies as they zipped around above the water catching midges and things to eat. I'd shot one off a leaf before, but I wanted to hit one in flight. Their flight patterns are so erratic it's almost impossible to track them, but after many hours and probably a thousand BBs I hit one. It dropped into the water and wriggled as it drifted downstream until a bass gulped it. I think anyone within a mile probably heard me whooping and yelling. Proudest shot of my life. I think I want it included in my epitaph when I'm buried.

I have seen 22lr reloaded without any special machine. You take the spent case and find a punch or some metal rod the same size as the inside diameter of the case and tap the firing pin indent back out. You can buy the compound to make the primer powder off line I forget where but it is available it comes as separate components that need to be mixed. The same person also reloaded his own pistol primers with the same components. He was able to make reliable 9mm for 3 cents a round during the pandemic by reloaded primers casting his own bullets.

Yes , we can reload .22 short and lr. A tool called a casing iron exists , it's first iteration was for making bullet jackets from spent .22 cases , the second version allows for the case to be reprimed with liquid priming compound and then loaded on specialty dies with cast bullets or turned bullets. (.224 to .221) because I am busy and no I didn't wait to listen to the answer. Rcbs made/makes? the first version . A quick search shows Corbin making the first style case iron for bullet jacket making, and the type 2 is now just a resizing die . "Sharpshooter supply" is the first search option under .22lr resizing dies. Skiving the brass cases will be important for expanding bullets , and it's super simple to bond lead cores with borax . You need a way to hold your bullet jackets from just their bases when ready for a core ,put in a baking pan and fill with water so it is about 1/8th inch over the holder . Make a borax paste and paint the insides of the jacket, heat until it bubbles and melts. Add your core , flux exposed core and inner case again . Heat until the lead melts . Let cool . Heat again , cool , form as for expanding projectiles . This will give a heavy brass base, bonded core with preprogrammed jacket . Lead alloy will dictate how fast it needs to go to expand . Old speer bullet designs can be replicated with such methods . All components must be measured by weight for controlling pressures and maintaining accuracy when loading .

Remember to include the 5,7 x 28 cartridge, famously the round for the FN P90 sub gun and now several other carbines and pistols.

Used to shoot red and flying squirrels in the house with a crossman pump BB gun. It left blood splatter all over the drywall but never penetrated the drywall. Had massive 30’ cathedral ceiling. Always kept the BB gun ready in the living room. Maine allows “22 magnum rimfire” or larger for hunting all game. So if you want to get a moose with a 22 mag you can. No word on 17 wsm or 204 ruger in the book.

I have used the CCI Quiet .22 Segmented to great effect on wood chucks in a city/urban environment AKA a city in wisconsin. CB speeds, but way more damage.

The terminal ballistics of the 22 Yellowjacket, on a gopher, is extremely noticeable, compared to a high velocity 40 gr. round.

55:48 you won't find a 20 gr .177 airgun pellet or slug. In .22 you do though. You can even get 40 gr .22 airgun slugs, so you get very close to .22 LR subsonic with an airgun.

They mentioned that some gun's like certain types of casing thickness. I wonder if down the road that everyone will be using that trick to request another type of measurement on ammunition boxes. I could see it be included on ball type ammo.

@@HarrisonCountyStudio it helps to make more sense as to the cost difference between “bulk” ammo and higher end stuff, like Ely Match or the Lapua stuff. Good to know that if you have the time/desire you can make the bulk stuff perform better.

You will have to ask who ever bought Remington about that pump action 22 shot gun and see if Henry could make them!

22 long rifle center fire brass are now available that take small rifle or pistol primers. I'm swaging 60 grain lead bullets and getting average MV's of 1040 fps with small charges of #9. 1/9 twist. Current problem is no primers available.
