Binge watched the whole channel! Really great source of information. Not just for grips and gaffers, but even for small crew productions where a DP maybe has to do light and grip as well. I'm the type of guy who wants to understand what all the different roles do on a larger scale production. And this is a perfect way for me to get into that. 10/10

This guy looks like Ryan Gosling and Film Riot made sweet love and had a child.

Love this channel, so much concrete information in one place - it's amazing! As an upcoming solo/indie DP, I love to learn as much as I can, including the art of a grip. So, definitely appreciated!

You forgot to include tunnel tape. It's available in 4" and 6" widths in yellow, black or my favorite, 6" yellow/black striped. The key advantage is it's only sticky on the outer 2" (on 6" roll) or 1" (on 4" roll) so cables don't get gaffer glue all over them. A huge time saver.

I've been using gaff tape for 20 years and I had never heard of photo black.

I think it is just a form of paper tape. I thought the same thing when the video started.

In the Netherlands, Nichiban gaff tape is the standard and it's pretty darn good. I've tapped stripped Kinoflos 4bank 2ft to the ceiling of an elavator, 2banks 4ft to painted wallpaper, and so on. The key is to take the gaff tape off gently. If you just rip it off, you'll take either the paint or the wallpaper off. Just go nice n' slow.

All I use is black paper tape, check your local rental house. I get mine for free when productions throw out expendables. Try rapping tape around credit card, i keep it in my pocket. A lot easier than a roll.

I'm with you, my first year as a videographer I was working on live event coverage and let's say the hotel manager was not impressed on the damage made to the conference room 's carpet.

Awesome video! Really useful tips, thanks. But I was wondering do you have an alternative tip for taping a stand?

Thank you sir. Perhaps different regions of the world calls it differently. Maybe the differentialing factor is low adhesive versus high.

I've never seen black masking tape, but if it's like normal masking tape, I would never use it on cables. Masking tape always left our cables with a slimy, sticky, gummy coat of tape goo that was a royal bitch to get off. I'd never heard of photo black, but I'll try it. Thanks for the tip! :)

4:00 Do you do this for every shot?
@GripTips
@GripTips 7 лет назад
Alejandro Escalas no, it's time consuming but most of the time I find myself throwing floor matts over it. I pretty much only do it if it's like a High traffic area and the cable is gonna live there all day. Or if it's a small section like 2-3 feet and is passing by a doorway. But floor matts are quick to just roll over the cable and roll back up when you're done...hm...maybe I should do an ep on that
